How to Stay Loose But Controlled on the Drums

In today's lesson, I break down a simple, but effective finger control exercise that you can practice in order to stay loose on the drums while having maximum control. I use this exercise to help control my loose ride cymbal beat when I'm playing Jazz, but it can help out across the board in all kinds of drumming.

This reminds me of something from Gary Chaffee's books. I think it was in his Technique Patterns book. You isolate each finger to strengthen and develop control individually and then combine it all together.

I see my fulcrum fingers as the grip and use my other fingers for control
Because I have a habit of changing grip styles depending on where I am and where I need to go quickly and if I want to accent a beat or hit a triplet

You should be able to use both equally well to get the maximum effect of your drum kit
