    Sourdough Bread Baking Guide:
Sourdough bread is a type of bread that is made using a sourdough starter instead of commercial yeast. The sourdough starter is a mixture of flour, water, and naturally occurring yeast and bacteria that is fermented over time to create a living, active culture. When used in bread baking, this starter gives the bread its distinctive tangy flavor, chewy texture, and longer shelf life compared to bread made with commercial yeast.
If you're interested in baking sourdough bread, here's how to get started:
Make a Sourdough Starter: To make your own sourdough starter, you'll need flour, water, and patience. Mix equal parts of flour and water in a jar and cover with a cloth. Let it sit at room temperature for 24 hours. After that, discard half of the mixture and add equal parts of flour and water to the remaining mixture. Repeat this feeding process every 24 hours for about a week, or until the mixture becomes bubbly and has a tangy odor.
Feed Your Starter: Keep your starter alive by feeding it regularly. This means discarding most of it and adding fresh flour and water. You can store it in the fridge between feedings, but take it out and feed it at least once a week to keep it active.
Bake Your First Loaf: To make sourdough bread, you'll need flour, water, salt, and your sourdough starter. Combine all the ingredients, knead the dough until it's smooth and elastic, then let it rise until it's doubled in size. Shape the dough into a loaf and let it rise again before baking in a preheated oven at 450°F for 30-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
Experiment with Different Flours and Shapes: Once you've got the basic sourdough loaf down, you can start experimenting with different flours, shapes, and flavors. For example, you can add whole wheat flour, nuts, seeds, or dried fruit to your dough for added texture and flavor. You can also try different shaping techniques to make boules, bâtards, or even rounds.
Store Your Bread Properly: To keep your sourdough bread fresh for longer, store it in a bread box or a cloth bag at room temperature. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months.
In conclusion, sourdough bread is a delicious and healthy alternative to commercial yeast bread. With a little bit of time and patience, you can easily start baking your own sourdough bread at home. And the best part? Your sourdough starter will keep growing and improving with each bake, so your bread will only get better over time.

Thank you so much for showing us how to make our own starter! I love sourdough bread, but the store bought kind has so many ingredients in them. I have wanted to learn to make my own bread, but have always felt intimidated to make my own starter for it. Thank you so Julianne, for teaching this 52 year old how to keep it simple!

Great informative video for those wanting to start their sourdough journey. Mine is almost five years old. Use it for breads, pizza crusts, cakes, muffins, etc. Great flavor. The biggest take away is not to stress about it and keep it simple. Too many websites try to make it difficult. Which it isn’t. Thank you! ❤

Cook with a KISS! - Keep It Simple Stupid! Well, this just makes sense. Especially since I've been fermenting other things for a couple of years now. This method is basically the same as any other ferment. Brain click! Or light bulb moment! Thank you, seriously thank you! I've been wanting to try sourdough for a while now but have kept busy with other things. I can remember my grandma dumping this and that into a bowl and mixing and kneading and suddenly we have bread out of the oven. I didn't inherit that ability. Making bread has been my nemesis for years! But I'm not giving up! Honestly, I really want sourdough to try everything but bread. Sneak extra goodness in on my family!

Good video you two! I usually feed mine just before I use it for bread to bulk it up and get it super active. 1 tsp of soda will help lessen the sour flavor if it is too strong. Julianne, with the discard I would suggest the sourdough fudge brownies and peanut butter cookies...so good. I have also added whole wheat to the sourdough starter and water for making the bread - I just did not use 100% whole wheat but rather about 60/40.

    Rye flour works much faster
You can use after has fermented and can use as yeast
White flour rye flour wheat flour and intermix
If u want to change to white just keep feeding with white flour
Best to cover your fermenting starter with cloth or plate otn bottle depending on what u are using to avoid bugs
Also be sure to cover loosely
You can start directly into vessel you want to keep in

Thank you for this great information! I have 2 cats so I think I'll have to get something like a window screen to cover it and keep the cat hair out. Or does anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks!

Thank you so much for doing a new starter video. I am one of those nervous ones...didn't want to "stink up" my home. I will start it tonight and looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Do you ever have to move it to a new container after any length of time? Does the jar get "funky"?
hugs and blessings to you all. Stay warm!

Hi Kathy! If the sourdough starts to build up on the sides of the jar, I'll either wash the jar or move the starter into a new jar. The bacteria and yeast in the sourdough starter will actually inhibit the growth of mold and bad bacteria.
