    Seiko SNSX77 - www.jdoqocy.com/click-8946237...
    In this Seiko SRPK87 unboxing video, I take a look at the new Seiko 5 sports SNXS series, to see if it's worth the monumental price increase over the previous generation. I also unbox the original SNXS77, for a direct comparison. Is this 2024 refresh or reissue worth the upgrade? The original watch is most popular in it's black guise, the SNXS79, while this SRPK87K1 has a rinse blue dial, it's also available in 'deep black wash' and 'beige chinos' colors.
    These watches were both purchased with my own money.

    I have two of the original SNXS watches (one w/ silver dial, one w/anthracite). I think we need to remember that the old Seiko 5s were so cheap, because Seiko lost control over their distribution channels outside Japan and also produced too many of these watches. The old Seiko 5s flooded the grey market and prices plummeted. Same happened with the SKX and SARB, which were JDM models and never meant for the US and European markets. I agree the new version is overpriced, but they come with upgrades from the SNXS. The bracelet is much better than the unusable one on the SNXS, which had folded links and was a huge hair-puller. The movement hacks and hand-winds. The case sits lower on the wrist rather than like a UFO. And 100m water resistance is much better than 30m. That said, I don't like the cream colored lume and chapter ring, and I like the old dial design better overall. This watch is a bit sportier and less dressy than the SNXS. $395 is too much, but I expect it to be discounted 25-35% soon enough. $280-300 is not a terrible price for a watch that is distributed via authorized retailers rather than via Aliexpress or direct to consumer (like most microbrands).

      99% of microbrands who are competing with seiko would be nothing without NH3X series movement. From the 5 series i still think the best buy is the SPRE and GMT series. But this one from the video and pictures what I saw looks nice.

      Thank you for explaining this.....a concept which I though would have been a simple for these supposed "watch reviewers" on youtube to grasp. Unfortunately we have to put up with reviewers (this channel included) who continue to compare MSRP prices to street prices/discounted prices of older Seiko 5s.
      Never forget, the MSRP of the USDM (yes USDM I said) SKXA35 and SKX175 was 475 USD. But nobody paid 475 for an SKX.....more like 150 to 200 back in the day right?

    Hey Ben, not sure if youll see this but on the off-chance you do:
    The old SNXS models have a very standard seiko caseback threading on the case, I bought a seiko caseback on ebay for $5 without a display window and it is much thinner than the stock one the SNXS comes on. The watch sits far closer to your wrist once you swap them, might not be a bad idea for you to try.

  • @NoOne-pl9ld
    @NoOne-pl9ld หลายเดือนก่อน +31

    If you look at the actual MSRPs for the previous generations of 5s they were never meant to be so cheap. Most of them entered into markets that they weren't designed to be sold within and that's why they ended up costing so little. This isn't Seiko "cranking up the price" this is Seiko releasing their watches within their proper MSRPs (The MSRP for the skx was originally 300+)

    • @d3xmeister
      @d3xmeister หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Actually one of my SKX007 came from Japan with its original Seiko 5 stickers, and its msrp in yens for the time it was sold was around $450. Remember a while ago the SKX could be bought for under $150

      "Proper MSRP"? 🤷🏻‍♂️
      .
      Whatever the argument about what Seiko prices should have been and why at their current MSRPs the microbrands are offering much better watches for similar money. Seiko's minor improvements aren't keeping pace with the curremt market.

    • @d3xmeister
      @d3xmeister หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michaelredding6219 Microbrands always offered much better value than known brands. It's been like that since the 1940's. Look at vintage watches, you'll find very good watches from obscure brands, good specs, good movements, some original but most copied designs, why do you think people bought them back then ?

    • @NoOne-pl9ld
      @NoOne-pl9ld หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@michaelredding6219 @In_The_Loupe I'm not saying microbrands aren't offering "better watches." My point is that watch nerds on youtube tend to operate with a surprising lack of business literacy. These claims of "WhAt Is sEiKo ThInKiNg?!" --Seiko isn't making watches for watch dweebs, they're making watches for Macy's shoppers. They're making men's jewelry. That's something you have to understand if you're going to contextualize why these businesses make the decisions they make
      Case in point, the big brands use mineral rather than sapphire at this price point because mineral allows a better view of the dial, which is more alluring for selling men's jewelry. If youtubers understood that then there wouldn't be this persistent shock of "Why dOn'T ThEy uSe SaPpHire?!"
      Seiko makes more money catering to mainstream consumers than a small cluster of obsessive people on youtube.
      Microbrands are not in the same market as Seiko/Citizen/Orient. These big brands aren't competing with microbrands, because they don't have to. They make more money in name stores than all the microbrand profits combined. Your average person doesn't look at watch reviews, they see a nice looking watch in some manner of store and buy it.

    Maybe one thought for the thickness. I also had firstly issues with that for this kind of watches (small, classic seiko 5) ... but it ventilated (i felt this way at least) better and I got used to it. The flat looking dial, the chapter ring and the hands cheapens the overall look... make it look like a toy watch. Hopefully they will release more dressed down versions but even then you still have to address the elephant in the room... the price. Seiko again cheaply altering old designs for the worse and trying to sell them for a lot more money as improved re-releases. Personally I would not consider this watch for purchase, despite how good it looks to me. When I'm browsing watches online & I find something that looks appealing, the crystal is the 1st spec I'll look at, and if it's not sapphire I lose interest. The whole process of being attracted to a watch and then realizing that it's dead to me may only take seconds. 🤷

This should not cost more than say $200. I'm sure eventually you'll be able to find it at those prices but Seiko is definitely being more and more ambitious with pricing.

    Seiko has been making minor improvements and drastically increasing prices, but as pointed out there is so much microbrand competition that's simply better in every regard for the money. Seiko is killing their value proposition.

    I think Jody's Erebus Ascent is the winner in this review!

    How much do you think seiko spent on R&D, Marketing etc on these watches compared to say a San Martin? Millions I would imagine. Not to mention seiko sell these on to online and high street retailers for a fraction of the eventual retail price.Respectfully Ben £170 retail is bonkers. Personally I love these and will pick one up no qualms when the price drops after the hype dies down.

    I agree, modern Seiko's are way overpriced! Back in the pandemic I picked up several new original MM200's for $500-$700. Pepsi's and others with the 6R15. When I look at modern models and their prices I couldn't imagine spending twice the price for less watch. And the accuracy of the 6R15 is a big sleeper secret.

    I really dislike it. The cream chapter ring and lume just looks bad to me. Colormatch the chapter ring, use normal Seiko lume, and it’d be solid. The orange seconds hand isn’t my favorite, but if they didn’t have all that strange off-white there… it’d be fine.
    I know there are going to be a lot of comments about folks mad about the crystal and the price, and I understand. But I’m more annoyed at the design. This is not the right watch for faux patina. Sometimes it’s OK when the yellow would be a useful contrasting color, but here… it just looks bad.

    Really surprises me how dumb some of the big brands are. Seiko could effectively just make the same watch as Erebus, charge a reasonable premium and they would have a massive hit on their hands. Jody and his team have done an amazing job with the Ascent, but Seiko could charge more due to brand name. All of that would be preferable to the endless procession of Seiko 5 rubbish being pumped out.

    I get the price is a whiff too high for what you are getting. But tell me a big brand which doesn't charge more for the same product specs as a no name brand... and I don't get, why people are praising the original Seiko 5 watches, and trashing the newer ones. They are better in every aspect, especially with the 4R34 movements. The only argument that gets thrown at you every time is the cheaper price of the older ones. But that doesn't make the watch a better proposition in my opinion. In the end, if you look beside the price point, you are getting a better watch overall.

    • @BR81-iv6lt
      @BR81-iv6lt หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Seiko, although lacking in quality control sometimes has brand heritage, san Martin does not and wil never have that. Yes the quality of san martin is great but it will always be a brand that makes copies, and BTW they are all uncomfortable to wear, many sharp edges.

    I am not a fan of the SNXS series for one reason. It could be so much better. The case shape is weird and mixing the polished and brushed surfaces is just hectic, the hour markers are too thick and the color should not be this creamy faux patina. The colors are not matching, blue, cream and orange? It is all over the place.

  • @unwokeneuropean3590
    @unwokeneuropean3590 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The brands of China rule this market. San Martin is better and cheaper. Edit: if you have the old Seiko snxs, replace a see trough caseback with a solid caseback. It will reduce the thickness.
