I totally agree. He was really feeling it this time around. It's such a shame that so much of the amazing live music people create is unavailable after the show... I would happily pay to have this.
The reason I prefer this to a Tim solo is because Tim has a tendency to fly a little too far above the jam (I'm only talking about his electric playing with DMB). John really analyzes what the other players are giving him and within that context, milks it for everything he can. Cliché as it is, sometimes less is more. Long live DMB.
While I agree he is phenomenal, Carter Beauford needs no cuing in order to keep up with a song... As a drummer myself, at his expertise he could feel the end of any fill mayer was playing and know exactly where to come back in
Agreed. John is a band leader and in this context he was the soloist so he took the role and cues in. Great rhythm sections never misses this kind of cuing and carter beauford is one of the most dynamic drummer alive today.
If Tim ever wanted to take a break, John Mayer would be an amazing addition for a tour, his love for DMB and experience with Dead and Co. make him a perfect fit
I've heard this 100 times and came across it in my feed and just had to watch it again. think I even commented on it here somewhere. The best news, for most of us, is I finally came across a full clean well recorded version of this! Looked everywhere for it! Now, if I can only remember where I saw it. :| If I find it again, I'll post it, but just know it is out there. It's the full song, and I believe high def or professionally recorded. Don't remember for sure, but it is clean.
Check out the security guard. The big tall guy with the shaved head in the middle of the screen. He even turns around and looks at the stage like "Damn. That shit sounds good. To hell with the crowd. I'm watching this".
Maybe after John’s experience with Dead and Company, he’ll join DMB for a show or a tour or something, as great as Tim is, John is an outstanding musician and really works well with the band, I’d love to see Warren Haynes come back more too
John's phrasing in the first 40 seconds is amazing. All you metal shredding players take notice. A flurry of notes is not impressive and is barely even listenable. Let your solos breathe.
Such an ignorant statement! Different types of solos are catered to various styles of music. You will never see B B king styled blues in a slayer concert! Same as you will never see Mark Morton from Lamb of God soloing to Dave Matthew. It is all the serve the song at hand.
That is a pretty ignorant statement. You're comparing 2 completely different styles of playing. I'm saying this as both a fan of John Mayer and of metal in general.
Can some musical genius explain what happens for 20 seconds at 1:13 ? I've listened to it so many times. What timing are John's strums compared to the timing of the rest of the song? Carter matches John's timing, but are the other band members changing chords according to the regular timing or John's new timing? If they are changing at all?
What's going on is that John creates a polyrhythm by accenting every 3 sixteenth notes, which creates tension because it offsets everything by one sixteenth note. Of course he isn't thinking about this while he is soloing, he is just "feeling" it. Carter does match it and the rest of the band sort of plays off it to create more tension.
fuck n a!! haha that was amazing and then all of a sudden it just ends! i am about to cry...... is there any full version of this! thank you for posting tho!
i love this guy in the audience (in line with JM at the start) who is looking at the audience for almost all of this vid. hahaha is he security or insane?
John Mayer with DMB is great combination like lamb and tuna fish...you prefer spaghetti and meatballs if you like that analogy better. #deliveryguy #bigdaddy #adamsandler
You can tell John been waiting for this moment to play with Dave. He probably had been practicing that solo since he was a kid listening to Dave.
This was his dream and he went for it lol awesome!
You have an extremely low IQ if you think he's practiced that solo.
I'm surprised these two haven't done more together. They seem to compliment each other tremendously.
Here we are many years later and John is playing with Dead & Co. The greatest guitarist to ever live, don't @ me
Also I'm pretty sure Dave was impressed how John took control of that band and sent them into outer space.
John Mayer with Carter is just absolute fucking magic.
That build up is lovely.
John Mayer is a goddamn King.
John played that solo so sick
Dave matthews band AND John Mayer? This is eye and ear candy!
WHAAAAAAAT THEY PLAYED TOGETHER???
How am i finding out now lol?
His best solo,what a legend
It's great to watch an amazing drummer and guitar player perform together.
amazing awesome!.!
Just goes to show music is timeless, still sounds like I was there in person. Thank you everyone involved
I'd take a Mayer solo over Tim any day. This is just sublime.
I totally agree. He was really feeling it this time around. It's such a shame that so much of the amazing live music people create is unavailable after the show... I would happily pay to have this.
OMG THE BEST THING I'VE HEARD IN A LONG TIME AND THERE'S NO ALBUM RECORDING! WHYYYYY!!!!!!!
i cant imagine seeing this live, gave me chills enough as is

+Brandon Evans cant beat tim when its just him and dave acoustic tho
+Connor Caine Definitely agree. I just like the more mellow smooth vibes with the full band.
I think this is when the band realized a electric guitar would complement the band greatly and got Tim, idk though
Mayer is a great musician and can easily steal any stage. Notice how he cues the drummer so he knows to end that long run... and go back to the beat.
While I agree he is phenomenal, Carter Beauford needs no cuing in order to keep up with a song... As a drummer myself, at his expertise he could feel the end of any fill mayer was playing and know exactly where to come back in
+Travix144 I don't think he meant it as an insult to him. Just meant Mayer was also on top of it... Great musicianship all around.

Omg John. He's been my inspiration for so long. He's truly amazing.

Gotta love Carter Beauford just smiling like a child in the background.

Cassius Allen I am not sure how an opinion can be an ignorant statement but okay.
This is why JM > TR. Both are great. Only one will be a legend.

WOW!Dinamite!!!
good to hear another side. Tim is very good and plays intricate licks. John brings a more tasteful version bringing out the blues in #41. props
i love this guy in the audience (in line with JM at the start) who is looking at the audience for almost all of this vid. hahaha is he security or insane?

Too bad you didn't catch the beginning where John says "I am who I am because of Dave Matthews Band..."
john thinking this drummer..
no, john is just easy to follow and beauford is a great drummer.
@Ben80997 #41
lol
Kiedy DMB przyjedzie do Polski?!!!
Obawiam się, że nigdy mój przyjacielu.
+Piotr Cieslik Do zobaczenia 27.10 w Ergo Arena
That's way to short!
@mikelocurcio why? hahaha its not even true.
He completely redeemed himself for that totally bland solo on #41 at Virginia Tech.
This is intermediate compared to Tim Reynolds.
I can do way better - this is not that good - he is too white - i'm white too - but a song with this much soul, you need to pull out some jimi
