  • A LIVE performance I gave of one of my favorite pieces of all time. "The Nymphs Lament" (Lamento della Ninfa) by Monteverdi is a deeply moving piece from the 17th century Baroque period. It tells the tale from the perspective of three male singers who take pity on the tragedy of a young girl who lost her love and now her mind.
    Ensemble Affekten:
    Andrew Major, artistic director
    Victoria Marshall, soprano
    Michaël Hudetz, tenor
    Dario Amador-Lage, baritone
    Walter Aldrich, bass-baritone
    Brandon Acker, theorbo

    Quite lovely in all, lovely phrasing but I can't help think (after having performed this very piece myself) that you would be stronger without a conductor. The ability of the three male voices to breathe and unite would be a strength. You have the voices and the blend is great ... just take it a bit further I reckon.

  • @jean-yvesPrax
    @jean-yvesPrax ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very beautiful performance. I think your interpretation would deserve a better place, for the atmosphere and for the sound rendering. Yes, this piece is definitively one summit of the baroque music. If after working it you don't understand what the term "affetto" means, give up with music ;-) So Brandon... is it a Passacaille or a Chaconne ? I think that at the time of Monteverdi, the terminology was still very fuzzy... it differentiated later.

      I dont think it's much of a debate personally. Baroque music is a style based on the novel idea, at the time, of text centric music. This is what Monteverdi is all about. Seconda prattica or Nuove Musiche.

    Would we call Montiverdi Renaissance or Baroque? This piece in particular seems to be much more happily Renaissance, with its Polyphny and general tonal weirdness.

      Baroque. The passacaglia is very Baroque and the piece uses seconda practica (second practice) which is a baroque idea that music should be text centric and can have strange harmonies if it fits the text.

      @@brandonacker That makes sense. Montiverdi is really fascinating for that, isn’t he? I guess I take him as a more so transitional composer, between the two worlds of Renaissance and Baroque music - though I was under the impression that the emphasis on the text was a Renaissance thing which the Baroque period departed from. I’m likely wrong about this, but aside from wherever I may have misread my info, the baroque period seems to have less primarily vocal works overall.

      @@quinnsine1650 Yes it sounds like you have things a bit backwards there. I'd look up the Florentine Camerata, Caccini's preface to Nuove Musiche, Seconda Prattica. The Baroque period has more vocal works that we can count (opera, oratorios, music for voice and continuo, cantatas, the list is endless.
