They're offered the internship and choose whether to take it. That said, yeah, unpaid internships suck. When I was completing my Bachelors in Accounting, I was required to have an internship for a semester and it had to be unpaid. It wasn't super long (about 200 hours if I remember correctly, so a little over a month), but still sucked. I'd laugh in the face of any company that said that was a requirement to start. Nah, it's cool. I can find people to pay me for work.

Tap into your creative side and do it for you and only you. Maybe for your family or those you love but definitely not someone using you for your skills.

I worked as an Intern for 2 years, I should have left after 9 months but I signed a BS contract, They paid me so less $70/month this only covered my home-to-office travel, and my workload/responsibility was the same as one of their employees, who was getting good pay too The best thing I could do to get out of there was to get fired, and there was only one senior in my support, he told me to start some misbehavior so I started to watch movies on my work PC and that got me fired, I still got a clean Internship letter because they didn't want to lower their reputation, also thanks to this supporting senior

When I was younger I used to watch my pops play solitare for hours on end. One of the best players I've ever seen; for the guy who made to get nothing honestly rubs me the wrong way.
I'm gonna play devils advocate here and say that he did a free work for them which they didn't even ask for. Just gave it to them and of course they accepted. They should've rewarded him something, but you shouldn't do free work in the hopes they appreciate it.

Computer games absolutely existed prior to this version of solitare. For example Sierra On-Line had already released the first two SPACE QUEST games and was on their way to releasing the third. There were tons of computer games available.
