  • In this video I fix a 2010 Jeep Wrangler that the customer complaint was, "it is stuck on defrost and the knob won't move." It is a pretty easy fix for a newer vehicle using an old style cable system. -Enjoy!

    I think Mrs. O. Positive encouragement about his quality of repairs is very genuine. I don't think there is one repair he can't perform. I might be wrong but for the many years of watching the SMA channel, the confidence level is really high. Interior repairs separate the men from the boys. Anyone can go full guerilla on these repairs and break everything. Eric O takes his time and does it right. Great video.

      I have to agree with Kenneth. I could do this, but the dashboard would have to be put back together with contact adhesive. The man has the patience of a saint when dealing with stubborn inanimate objects in general and interior plastics in particular.

    I have almost reached that day where I can't fix things like I use too. It sucks getting old and it sucks even more when you have the early onset of arthritis. I used to love turning wrenches. Now there are days where I dread having to do it. Still have a desire to do it, just my hands won't let me some days..

      You could try avoiding acidic foods like tomatoes and orange juice. Alkaline foods will help to reduce inflammation. I used to have gout pain and arthritic joints. It's gone now that I changed my diet. Get a book or do some online research on reducing the acidic foods and it might help you. It worked for me. Doctors will tell you this won't work. It didn't cost me anything to try it, so I did try it. Who wants to suffer? Not me. I'm pain free and more mobile now. Good luck to you.

    same type of mode cable is used for the temperature control knob. I had a no heat issue on my wrangler. all videos pointed me to blend door actuator that didnt solve the problem. then while watching your video I saw the temp cable, pulled everything apart like you did and found the temp cable falling off....fixed that, adjusted the heat where it belongs and I have heat in the jeep again. all this after I flushed the heater core and tore it apart to change the actuator. you saved me again....thanks for posting such great content

    Nice Job E... I have a 2010 Rubicon and have been working on Wranglers for 15 years.. Yes they are primitive (not sure about the new JL) but like the guy at the parts counter said.. hes never sold one.. thats because they very rarely if ever break. Parts are easy to get and for the most part inexpensive.. and they are fun to drive especially in the summer on the beach and in the mountains!!!! Gotta love the Wrangler :)

    The wisest part of the advice today is the way that even an experienced pro reaches for the dealer repair manual before proceeding. Alldatadiy and Mitchelldiy both offer inexpensive 5 year subscriptions for those of us who tinker with our cars, and I get one for every car I own. Electronic copies are much better than the old Haynes manuals, which lacked detail and couldn't offer TSBs. Of course if you're lucky enough to own a car fixed at SouthMain, you'll find an outstanding video here on TH-cam showing a step by step experience, ha ha.

    • @andrewpropes3646

      Totally agree. I have FSM's for those that I work on regularly and rely on AlldataDIY for the rest of what rolls in the door.

      I go to GM parts sites to see how things are attached. I just had some fun with an A pillar molding today. I was able to get the panel off but when installing it, the clip kept pushing back instead of going into the hole. I ended up carving a wooden plug to put behind the clip to keep it in place.

    • @tiredoldmechanic1791
      @tiredoldmechanic1791 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was comical how those manuals would go into detail about easy and obvious things but not give you the information you really needed, like remove 6 screws but not show where the 6 screws are.

    • @Bighead-he8zb
      @Bighead-he8zb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      spelunkerd. How much does the 5 year subsciption cost? Do you feel you need both? Is one better than the other? Thanks

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Bighead I get one or the other, not both, about $50 for 5 years or $15 for one year. Mostly I've used alldatadiy. My one Mitchell subscription for the 2015 Subaru is a little hard to follow, but I don't know if that is the newer car effect (too much reliance on dealer scan tool for diagnostics, weak diagrams, poor explanations and confusing algorithms), or Mitchell itself. These secondary sellers just copy what dealers provide, so if the dealer manual is too focused on professional algorithms then it won't be as helpful for amateurs. The technical service bulletins for common faults can be really helpful, with some info on what they will cover on warranty and what they don't.

    Another Great Video! One good thing about cables, you don't have to deal with motors, feedback loops, electronic wiz bang stuff, "low speed c.a.n." network stuff, a.t.c. modules, etc. In this Jeep's case, you didn't have to remove the entire dash to change the cable. Ya, I'm not the biggest fan of electronic HVAC controls. Oh well. I didn't design, build, or break it......I just fix it! Have a great day!

    We've gone through several of those in our Jeep. Issue is as they get a little older the cable won't slide as well and this can cause the long portion that bent in the video to bend as you twist. Best thing we've figured is when installing lube the cable with white lithium. If you ever are twisting and you feel resistance, back off and work it back slowly. Being gentle with that cable is just a good idea anyway.

The biggest job I had that involved tearing the whole dash apart was on a heater core job. I had to tear everything apart and pull the dash back, including dropping the steering wheel to get to that bugger

    Sometimes on jeeps the little plastic clip that holds the door in place dries out and breaks,on top of the heater box grab the door pivot and push the door back into position hold it there the other end sticks out on the bottom of the heater casing push a speed nut onto the shaft. Quick fix.

    The solid wire cables tend be more durable and bit more 'no parts required' fixable/adaptable .
    Cheap part and easy fix, pulling old interior trim makes my eyes and butt squint lol .
    was gravy baby, mainly due to bit of pre thought and care ...

    I'd rather buy a cable for $16 than pay $45 for a blend door motor. KISS, keep it simple stupid.

    Stranded wire push cable and lack of headlight on warning alarm are a couple examples of engineers being distracted by over complicating things like the radio.

    Strange- how it got kinked in the first place. Misrouted cable at factory, caused a bind?

    Never sold one before? Did you look in the vents for the frozen toy that jammed the mode door and caused the issue?

      This is probably still like that from the winter. More doors tend to freeze and impatient people try to force them.

    Eric O if they ever shutdown the plastic factories we will have no more cars. We'd have to build them the old fashion way with metal. Imagine what a 40000$+ jeep would cost then. What a rip off. Another good one though. ❤️

    I know this is a keep vid. But of you get a chevy rear 8 lug 14 bolt would make a great video. There is very little info on this. Thanks for all the get videos.

    I'd be wondering what made it bend like that..something on the other end must have got stuck and the cable got bent by it trying to force the other end to move.

    You can feel the tension build as the plastic panel is pulled before the retainer pops loose.
