    I have like five Panerai watches, and they have so much character and are very different from my other watches. I love them just as much as I love my Blancpains, Rolexes, and Omega’s. They have a unique character in spirit, not found in any other Swiss watch. Thank you for this.

    I've owned a Panerai Luminor 104 for 14 months and as soon as I got a notification of this upload my Panerai came out of its box and back on my wrist for its 2 weeks rotation. This was so interesting and funny too when you dropped the watch and a call was made to the CEO! Superb Alexander! God bless you, sir!

    Thanks for another video in this series.
    The water resistance is a particularly contentious point with some Panerai models, so good to see this addressed and possibly changed soon!
    Can you explain why they still had 30m for so long, was the production not reliable/consist enough to guarantee more?
    Also why was the test done with the crown lock open? Is there some issue keeping it closed at that depth? Since it is very uncommon to leave it open and it should perform better closed, but I am thinking this might not be the case, perhaps too much compression of the seal or something? Would love to understand the reasoning behind it.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for sharing our passion again! The WR will change soon... No, I cant explain you why, but I know that the generation of Luminor Due cases they manufacture know do withstand 200 meters. They are continuing the tests and they will define a new official WR for that model. Why was the lever open? Because the crown gaskets alone must guarantee the WR... closing the lever is another security on top... Understand that this is their way of thinking... it is not about showing off, but about delivering and guaranteeing the best possible quality...

    • @awatchcritic
      @awatchcritic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WatchAdvisor Thanks for the reply, and as I said good to see they are working towards guaranteeing proper water resistance again across their ranges. It shows they are listening to some of the criticism and improving/returning things constructively for watch enthusiasts that do care about these things (even if many current customers might already be OK with it).
      I rewatched and reread some comments on the Bronzo Submersible manufacturing video and it is clear many 'critics' don't understand manufacturing and supply chains which are all very common practice in the industry. A critic should be open to learn and understand circumstances and details fully before they comment..
      Is in-house a complicated statement today for anyone reliant on third party or in-group suppliers, yes. But then only watchmakers like Roger Smith can claim true in-house making every part including case and dial.
      Even Rolex is still reliant on many suppliers, they just bought/integrated nearly all, but they work in different buildings right! 😉 Some more transparency is nice but also not needed for 90% of customers and if competitors claim the same you have to match. In-house has just become a marketing word, what matters is if a brand has full control over the quality of each component.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The industry existing sensitivity of “in-house” was created by marketing departments far away from realty (= production). The image that was created made you believe that everything was done by hand and exclusively in-House. What nonsense!

    Thanks for this great video series Alexander.
    The video series is a good start from Panerai to address the issues that have been raised from collectors of the brand.
    Without being an expert in advanced manufacturing it is hard to form a view on the scale of their facilities and their ability to produce thousands of watches a year. I am going to guess that there are more than this one facility though!
    In terms of the Luminor Due I have been a big fan of this collection for my wife but we were put off by the 30m. It is good to see that they are more water resistant than the specifications provided. It does raise the question around long term water resistance over a prolonged period of time and a larger sample size. Once these are 100m water resistant we will be acquiring one for my wife!

    Another excellent video Alexander nice to meet the humorous side of the CEO and of the other Guy, but why do they only write 30m on the cases instead of the tested 200m? Or at least 100 meters. Aren't they sure? I think, that can only be for warranty reasons. I think that's a bit of a shame, it would win back trust. It is also interesting that the watertightness is achieved even though the lever is open.

    Panerai needs to communicate the real water resistance on every dial. What is the point of making a greater efford of testing it to 20bar and then write 30m on the dial without communicating it well enough? Who set the rule that customers don't want a dress watch with 200m water resistance? It is missed added value here! They will sell much much better with 200m on the dial. Especially to a younger audience. Please Panerai.

      Watertightness degrades with time as rubber gaskets decay. Any watch going into the water should have those checked before the season or for a 5 year old watch replaced. To reiterate, any rubber hardens over time, and thus, the seal effectiveness is reduced. I wouldn't drive a car with 5+ year old tires either.

And btw...company image rehab can definitely be done. Breitling has clearly proven that...and in just a few short years. Hopefully all the new alloys and tech they're using will translate into something it's customer base (and most watch people) can get on board with. Seems like they're playing the long game with those moves. For me personally, a little more water resistance on Due, and I'm in. Best of luck to these guys...who doesn't love comebacks!

      Some of the features have been temporarily removed to accelerate the improvements Panerai wants to make on these movements and also to reduce the size of the latter… the features will come back once the process they are in is terminated… By the way: also other manufacturers (not only watches) have done and will do such exercises without noticing their clients…

    Panerai is my favorite watch manufacturer. But I'd like them to explain, post it on their website, why they have such low levels of water proofness. Their heritage is scuba diving. It's a very odd strategy for a company that made it's name supporting scuba diving. You can get a $125 automatic watch with better water proofness. And at Panerai's price level, it's baffling and irrational. Extraordinarily odd.

      @@WatchAdvisor many Panerai references (e.g. 914 and 915, to name just some recent ones) sport a 300m water resistance limit, so it is no big deal. What really surprises me is why Panerai only declares 30m on some models. By the way, it looks odd that they put the crown guard (which was originally intended for high water resistance) on such poorely rated watches (water resistance wise).
