Matt, thanks for this GREAT video. It was quite informative. Unlike the 14 year-old mentioned earlier in the video, I'm approaching retirement and looking to start in on this as a hobby. You have given me a lot to think about and I appreciate the information!
You can get a lot of stuff from Craig's list and you can build your own kiln for under 100 bucks if you're creative. Also check welding supply shops for the oxygen tank
Check out whale apparatus in Hellertown Pennsylvania .great prices great selection and a great staff I'm local to them so they let me and anyone else who walks in to shop the warehouse. And I literally mean shop the warehouse. If you stop in you'll think your at the wrong place because you'll be standing in a little lobby looking at sales and secretary desks but dont turn around and walk out like I started to do before someone asked me if I was there for glass supplies and pointed for me to go through the office into a big warehouse room filled with glass and of all kinds and tons of supplies from rolls and torches to all kinds of carbon rods and sheets and tons of insulation and other odds and ends. They really take care of us locals. Knowing I'm working on a small budget with a big love of glass art they fle sure look out with killer pricing thats even better then advertised check them out online or walk in if your close by.
It might work for Soft Glass, but for Borosilicate you will want oxygen to boost the temperature. Soft glass is also harder to start with, It pops and cracks more easily.
Great video just an fyi purr glass has a 700$ starter kit with tools torch tubes and some glass plus the glasses great to look into for beginers bc u don't have to source everything
Hey Jackle, I think starter kits are great to have available, most of the items are needed, usually most kits will have an item or two you might not use depending on your set-up. However if you make your own "kit" you most likely will waste more money on un-needed stuff as its hard to know ahead of time what your really going to use. I checked the starter kit you mentioned, it looks pretty solid. However I don't see any clear glass and you will want UV eye protection (shade 2 or 3) along with Didymium. woah ventilation will definitely be $500+. hoods alone cost close to 1k. I recommend getting a torch you wont need to upgrade, as it will save you money in the long run.
I put my hood together with AC ducting parts I bought at the hardware store. I'm no metal expert but I think it turned out well. I'll have to do a ventilation video and go more in depth about that.
I had a job (non-glass related) for several years to build up my studio. Now that everything is paid for I just have Overhead costs (gas, glass, and electricity). So I quit my job and i'm transitioning to self employment.
