Any advice on someone that wants to set up a studio, but doesn’t have a garage to set up. I live in apartment and would love to have a studio of my own one day.
any recommendation for a bargain basement ventilation system that should handle any room/situation? or at least lowest cost that you shouldn't be able to easily blow yourself up with? glass blowing looks like a ton of fun and i really would like to give it a try someday.
Thanks for your message & question. Look into a couple small or one large outtake fan that you can connect to a hood. I would also check out other youtube videos where people have basement ventilation systems 👍
i have no glass experience but have set up afew ventilation systems for other things.. including making bho with butane. i would reccommend a 8-12 inch exaust fan, the bigger the better and try to have as little duct work as possible with no bends to have optimal airflow. so if your station can be set up near a basement window so the the fan only has a foot or 2 of ducting from the basement window, straight piped to outside would be optimal. please be safe if taking this venture and do mroe research to be sure this setup would be suffecient for your cause. www.amazon.ca/dp/B07BBJR6MK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07BBJR6MK&pd_rd_w=4rK22&pf_rd_p=4b7c8c1c-293f-4b1e-a49a-8787dff31bcb&pd_rd_wg=xSQJr&pf_rd_r=WVGFAJYTWWWE4F8ZKF0D&pd_rd_r=27325bc9-59cd-11e9-8ef0-0b4f280728eb
fans like this can be fairly loud i would also reccommend buying a larger fan than needed and a fan controller ( roughly $40) use it to run the larger fan at 85-90% and it wont be nearly as noisy. goodluck and again *stay safe!!*
ventilation is optional unless you are working with glass with weird residues (especially plastic) the oxy propane doesnt burn any actual air from the room, oxygen even comes from the bottle :P If the CO2 content of the room gets to a point where its a problem, you will definetly know! and if you see some water dripping from the ceiling its time to open the windows hehe (your body cant tell if its suffocating if you starve it of O2, it bases the feeling of suffocation based on the CO2 dissolved in your blood, if you want you can try inhaling some CO2 from a soda stream, or taking a whiff of a freshly opened soda bottle, its awful)
Ok so do I need flashback arrestors? I am setting up my studio. I got a redmax used with super short cut hoses. I ordered some 3/8 hoses but saw the flashback arrestors for sale and read I need them for safety. Do you have them already on in this vid or did I miss it?
Congrats on getting your studio set up!! Yes, you definitely want to add those. Did you know we teach you how to setup your studio correctly & also how to make & sell your work with our online course for $39 per month. Check it out here purrsmoking.com/collections/glassblowing
I worked in a studio 25 years ago making hummingbirds I need starter kit I need to make myself a job I have lung damage and none will hire me so I'm taking my last 1500 dollars and I'm going to be just fine just tell me how I can buy your starter kit so I can get down to biz thanks in advance
I feel like this video is a bit misleading.. it takes at least 1500-2000 to start up any kind of home studio that's actually safe. I don't even think you can find a kiln on the market today with a digital controller under 600 (Jen ken chili pepper) and the cheapest Pragon is around 7, and assuming the average person has access to some kind of studio that allows strangers to walk in and anneal their glass is unlikely for at least the vast majority ( so a kiln is needed). Regulators are at least 50-100 a piece with flashback arrestors and hoses plus tank rentals were already looking at close to 1000 maybe 1200. Picking out a beginner torch like a nortel minor is another couple hundred if you find it for a good price. Nice shade 3-5 glasses for boro work are also around 100. If you're planning to work with any kind of boro you need to know EXACTLY how many cfm's you're pulling in and out of your room; buy quality fans cheap ones are loud and break every couple months. Graphite tools and marvers aren't necessarily super expensive but buying 5 or 6 tools at a time will definitely put a dent in your wallet. I'm really not trying to be a pessimistic or say anything about your knowledge of the art; I just want the average viewer to understand it isn't really something you can just start up it takes a little bit of planning. It's an expensive hobby especially if you don't have access to a studio or another artist willing to give lessons. Plus glass is exxxxxxpensive especially when you're working with new colors and you don't know how they react under different conditions. If you made a setup without Oxy and ran off a hothead and made a very very beginner setup you may be able to get away with this budget, but even that's a stretch. Anyway just found your channel man great content please keep making videos!
Hey Noah, thanks for responding to our video and here is the link to watch the video on what you need to get started and where to buy it all for $500 th-cam.com/video/XE7MU5z_i-M/w-d-xo.html. It's important to understand that anyone can get started and you don't need fancy equipment to get started. We need more American artists out there blowing glass!! Once someone knows that they really love the craft they can always upgrade and purchase more expensive equipment. Again thanks for watching and the support ✌️ p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica} p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica}
Trevor Negron here is the link to the other video that shows what you need th-cam.com/video/XE7MU5z_i-M/w-d-xo.html Also, in the video description there are the links to where you can buy everything 👍
Andrew Murphy thanks for your comment but I’ve been using that mixture for over 15 years and never had any issues. TBH, it only takes a little bit of soap. No bubble baths here 😆
sebastian beltran why are you asking? Water & soap works great. Just need a drop of soap for the bottle of water. If you don’t have soap you can just use water 👍
Jeffery Rowan great question. For the propane we have it set at 10 PSI & for the oxygen 25 PSI. We do have several torches running off the same regulators. If you only going to run one torch you can get away with less pressure 👍
We don’t recommend leaving it on any of your gear any longer than needed to check your lines, but clean soap and water poses very little risk to your equipment. ✌️
You make nice glass with a modest torch.
It is the wizard more then the wand. :)
Love it this is what im doing only problem is ventilation
Get some out take fans or a hood above your torch for ventilation 👍
@@PurrGlass thank you for working with me

Hi guys love all the videos, what is a good affordable kiln and lathe to start with for a beginner

@@PurrGlass i know this video is 5 years old but i hope this guy didnt die because he half-assed the ventilation lol
Its really a flame working studio, but still very cool

I wish they got into the regulators a little more but still a great video
No flashback arrestors?
Watch this updated video th-cam.com/video/gV-Chk1kgwQ/w-d-xo.html
This seems more like lamp working than glass blowing.
That works too
Can u use acetylene tank instead of propane

Are you supposed to empty the lines after working on a piece ?
Yes, when you're done for the day it's always a good idea to empty your lines.
What? Does anyone have a transcript of this? I can't hear a word.
We’ve got tons of updates videos covering this topic and more 🙏
Where do I get a oxygen tank

Soap and water beats running a flame over the connectors.

safety first lol what about securing bottles to the wall so they dont drop
We do go over this in a newer glassblowing setup video, its definitely an important safety measure, especially here in California!
It’s not good to use soap and water on oxigen tanks’

Um…… just abruptly ends? wtf? Downvote.
no flashback arresters?
