I love how can put things into a new perspective for me. I never even considered the fact, that Japan was manga country #1 and could have easily designed much better mascots than what they came up with. My only guess is that they didn't want it to be "too japanese" because Korea as a co-host might feel left out then. But still, anything but those jelly freaks would have been better. Also, the mascot that will always be branded into my brain the most is Footix. 1998 was the first world cup that I truly followed and this guy was everywhere. Not to mention I played a lot of "World Cup 98" on PC back then and Footix always stood in the bottom-right corner of the screen looking at me and doing stuff. And he also "bienvenu-ed" me to every stadium/city I played in. Fond memories.
Even if they didn't want to be 'too Japanese' there were much better alternatives, like the cute chubby mascots they are already known for. ANYTHING but the alien jelly freaks! Footix was cool, but in my mind Zakumi and Zabivaka eclipse him as they are more complex and less simplistic looking than Footix
Here's a fun fact for you: Back in 1986 when Nigel Mansel was on the outs with his mercurial (ie: giant asshole) Williams teammate Nelson Piquet he went and acquired a small statue of Picante which he kept in the team trailer and named Nelson as a way to get into piquet's head. Piquet got his revenge by hiding the bog roll when mansel got the mexico city squirts at the mexican grand prix.
Imagine in the next Fifa title if EA let us play as the mascots. I mean at least EA could interject some arcade-y fun elements before any bs microtransactions.
I'm honestly surprised the U.S. made such a boring mascot. You'd think they try for a super hero that plays soccer, or at the very least give the dog a cowboy gettup or something.
yeah, Striker coulda been so much more interesting... they could have given him a personality by giving him some sort of quirk, but nope. They went super bland with him.
