- Watch as Shane with Great Plains Traditional Bow Co. gives this 1961 Bear Kodiak a full restoration. He straightens a twisted limb, opens the sight window, radiused the shelf, fixed deep scratches and any blemishes, and gives it a fresh coat of finish. i have to thanks you Shane, first i have a bow from your company , and i also have some old bows.
with your fantastic video here for exemple i decided to correct some issue on my Damon Howatt Monterey.
the tiller was 3/4 inch positive on the upper limb and got a little twist in the two limbs.
i succeed to do it in two hours, after seeing your video more hours.
now the tiller is correct and no more twist, the bow is more confortable at the release, a little bit smoother, i lost only two pounds after decrease my brace height about 1/4 inch.
so thank to you Shane for making me confident to try it, i'm so happy now.
big hug from France.
sorry for my bad english.

Another good video, I enjoy these old bow restorations
Thanks for watching!
Super interesting job and lots of interesting details in your videos.
I'm looking forward to the second part, especially how you deal with the holes in the riser.
Best regards from Bavaria!
Thanks for watching!
I learn so much from these restoration videos. I literally have hundreds of these old bows and love restoring them. After seeing a lot of half-assed attempts people have made on some really nice bows, It's great to watch you do a proper job. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for watching, George! It means a lot to me!
As a budding garage bowyer, I'm learning a ton from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You're welcome! Glad to do it! More stuff coming
Thanks man appreciate the knowledge
Nice work Shane! I enjoyed the video. Looking forward to Part 2 to see how this project comes out. I hope that all is well! ✝️
Thanks for watching, Tom!
Awesome seeing you work as always mate
Thanks, Glen!
Shane, decals for most vintage Bear bows are available from Alan Harford. They are exact matches for the old silkscreens.
Very good to know
I love watching you do these bow reworks, and I love Bear bows. Question, I have a 1967 Bear super kodiak 64" 50# that has delaminated. It is a clean break and I can squeeze it back togeather to it original shape. Can this be re-epoxied back togeather and retain the original shooting characteristics?
This is one of my favorite bows, broke my hart when it poped.
Hi Frank, text me a picture of the delamination. 620-260-6600. Thanks for watching my channel!
I have an old longbow that I inherited and it was handed to me strung. I have no idea how many years it’s been left that way. So I’m wondering if I should have someone who knows what they’re doing look at it before I try shooting it. I don’t want to break it. Does it need to be worked on?
Send me pics 620-260-6600
what's the chances that twist was caused by stringing through the legs??
It's definitely a possibility, but it could just be the wood taking on it's environment over the years also
I have a bear green glass Super Kodiak that i found in a barn.... Someone drilled holes in the limbs... I want to use the riser and replace the limbs my self, after i make a form based off of the original bow.... What would be the best material for the wood core limbs and glass/resin that would keep it close to what was originally their, but I've also never heard of anyone actually replacing limbs before, any info would be really appreciated.... It's such a beautiful bow that i hate to have it sitting on the wall and not use it.... Can't wait until part 2
If you've got the time it can be done. Most of the bear bows were cored with maple to keep it original, but bamboo is far superior as far as limb cores go
I bought a bow, and the seller said it was a “Ben Pearson” but I don’t know for sure, any way to tell? The markings say M574. It also has green limbs similar to the one you have in this video which is interesting. I’m definitely going to restore it, has some scratches here and there
I'm not sure what M574 means right off. Join the Traditional Archery Society page on Facebook and post it on there. Guarantee someone will know
If you could make a video explaining where to remove material to correct limb twist! Limb twist always confuses me
Yeah I'll be doing that when I can find time
I own a 1966 Bear Kodiak Magnum bow. I’m the original owner, and purchased the bow in Grayling, Michigan. The bow is in very good condition, but has a limb twist, in the lower half. I haven’t fired this bow for the past 50 years, but wasn’t aware that it could be refurbished. I would love to be able to shoot this bow again, and know it is still safe to use. Please reply.
I can fix it for you or I can tell you how
@@greatplainsbow I have shipped my bow. It could arrive on Monday. There are written repair instructions included. I believe the limb twist is in the upper limb. I will be obvious, when you look down the bow.
@@earlunderwoodjr.6766 sounds great, Earl! I'll be looking for it!
@@greatplainsbow After a little further research, I found that I purchased my Bear Kodiak Magnum bow in 1967. That was my senior year of high school. The serial number begins with a “7” and the “U” as in Underwood.
@@earlunderwoodjr.6766 that's interesting
Wow this was great indepth. Going to try straighten a limb tip and refinnish. What was the perfect tiller for 3 under you measured on this one?
Either 1/16" or 1/8". I prefer 1/8"
But it all depends how far above center the shelf is cut. Those measurements are for a shelf that's one inch above center. A good rule of thumb is for every quarter inch above center after one inch add 1/16" tiller
So much more to it. You could do a paid video series on bow refinshing with all the details. So thankful you put these out.
@@chrisranyner4890 just happy you like the videos
Hey, I’m reworking a 1953 just like that could you tell me what kind of glue that is that you used to repair those cracks and scratches and little holes you sanded it and then you added the glue and then you sanded it and then you added the glue what kind of glue is that, thanks have a good day
CA glue or just really thin super glue
Whats the process for getting a bow reworked by you? I have a 70s kodiak magnum thats a good shooter but has seen better days aesthetically. Also how much do you normally charge for these reworks? Love the channel!
Thanks for watching! I am full up on reworks for 2024, but I could do it in 2025. They run around $200-$250
Never leave the string in your hood when using power equipment.
