The Wild Parakeets (Ringneck) of Hyde Park in London, U.K.

  • The parakeets will fly onto your hands, shoulders, head and arms if they see that you have food for them. At times, it can feel overwhelming but also lots of fun to have them all over you.
These parakeets actually look closer to the size of a small parrot, and I guess I'm thinking of the domesticated parakeets that I've seen. Perhaps in the wild, they simply grew larger. According to various websites, the official name for them is ring-necked parakeet (Psittacula krameri).
Here are some links to various articles that describe more about them, how they came to be and growing in large numbers (and the problems they now face from predators):
    www.citylab.co...
    www.independent...
    londonist.com/...
Ed did the camcorder filming & narrations at the beginning & then utilized iphone video to shoot the latter scenes of the birds feeding from our hands.

Handfeeding a wild bird is a very poor idea.

@Taznaz Z I know. What I wrote, while true in someway, is just an over-simplification of what's the real danger of artificially enhancing their food supply.
Short and simple: They are non-notive/invasive. If left alone they might be able to intergrate into the ecosystem without doing much, if not any, harm.
But by feeding them/enlargining their food supply we enhance their population growth capicity which in turn causes them to compete native species out of the ecosystem (or atleast littling their population) and ruin the ecosystamic balance.
Don't blame the poor ringneck, of course. They are only trying to survive in the dire situation we put them in. But if we keep continuing this, we'll only run into the danger of ruining ecosystems and the ringnecks image.

God, I love the internet, a two minute search and just by typing green bird in London I found the name. Then typing that in to yourube i found this video and confirmed its the same birds just by the sound they made in the video. (I couldn’t see the birds well so I wasn’t even sure if they were 100% green because they were flying too fast and almost looked white then a faint green at points. They’ve been dancing around my bedroom window for a while, about a dozen of them. Adorable! Wish they’d come and help me clean my room like they did in Cinderella 😂 really reminded me of those birds form the film

Those are ringneck parrots which are commonly sold as exotic pets in the United States. This is either one of two scenarios.
One, she could be in Hyde Park in the UK which does has a small population of feral ringneck parrots. Ringnecks are known to social and friendly so this happening isn't far-fetched.
Or two, these are her pet parrots and letting them out to enjoy some free air.
There are some small populations of feral ringneck parrots in parts of California, Florida and Hawaii but not sure if there are any parks that they've been known to congregate to because that there is a park she's at. I personally believe she's probably at Hyde Park in the UK. Also, she's got food people. When animals are used to humans and they see food, they'll come. This isn't Disney magic 😆😆 But it does look cool!

@huawei thirteenmegapixel And the biggest problem of all is that, "artificially" largening this spiecies' foodsuply will also do major harm towards the ecosystem (in long term).
People feed them --> The population grows ---> the population grows larger then the ecosystem would have let happen, simply because we artificially largened their foodsuply ---> the birds strip the lands and leave little for other spiecies --> these birds (unrightfully, because it's our fault) get seen as a nuisance and will be culled
All because we (us humans), were too stupid.
      It truly is a shame.
But hopefully rules will be set, and people will be educated before we're this far down the road. ;)

Fun as this may be, I don't think feeding them up should be encouraged. Beautiful yes, but they are thriving to a fault, They have become invasive and are bullies to our native birds whos food sources are already depleted. Also they nest in holes in trees, like squirrel holes and my sister saw a parakeet kill a squirrel. I like all animals and birds but do feel we owe it to our native wildlife to protect them from these overly prolific earsplittingly squarky pretty boys that have been allowed to become too prevalent to manage. Culling should have been done more frequently. At this rate a peaceful summer day listening to the sounds of birds and bees will become a thing of the past, drowned out by squarking flocks. Very sad. Give me flocks of funny harmless pigeons any day. They feed from your hand too.

I love seeing these birds when I visit London. There has been talk of culling them as they are invasive but why do they not just catch them and find a home for them like they would a feral cat or dog? I am genuinely interested, does anyone know? There is probably a sensible reason that they don't consider this but I don't know what it is. People catch wild birds for the pet trade in other countries which is often devastating to the native species. Why not do this with an invasive species if the alternative is a kull?

We can all thank that older man in the distance holding a bag. He distributes the seed to people, so I'm guessing he's largely responsible for some of the "tame" behavior of the birds.

If these birds were about in 19th century, Sherlock Holmes had easier ways to catch the culprits.

It takes about 18 months for a male's ring to show up, they could just be young birds.

An invasive species, i prefer native species & most of ours are having a hard time. These have been put on the general license & are legal to trap & shoot, that's what my friends & i are doing to protect what we have got. Helps that i hate the colour green. They don't need to put a bounty on these things as the harm they cause native species is enough for me.

I get your point of view. But moraly speaking, you arn't doing the right thing.
These birds didn't fly here by choice. It's all because of human meddling to begin with.
Don't blame the poor bird. They are highly intelligent (and inocent, like I mentioned before) and it pains me to see anything bad happen to them.

Wow this brings back memories of Australia from 20 years ago. There are areas like this where you just hold a handful of seed and call and like here they all come down and land on you
