    Athens throughout its meteo history, has had snowfalls like this, its not the first time and definitely not the last one. Such amount of snow of course doesnt fall every year (although we had 2 times in a row this time 2021 and 2022). Winters are generally mild in Greece compared to northern Europe, but it can snow a lot all over Greece,sometimes even by the seaside. We have branded Greece only as a summer tourist destination and this is actually bad, because the mainland is totally mountainous with very beautiful sceneries, it is not that we are a country of islands

    • @geobob3793
      @geobob3793 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah exactly but winter, is for us, the greeks, to enjoy it without tourists, so dont be sad, let the winter vaca for us, come again at the summer when we choose just to enjoy our homes in the village, this is the hard true, dont be mad but think a destination full of tourists , and think again the same dest without any tourists, silence this is what i enjoy the most

    Great! It is lake effect snow. So what happens is that very cold air from the north or north east blows over the warm sea and so snowshowers (big ones) appear and you get these amounts of snow.
    Over here in NL we had one day and that was only in my province at the start of december and it was nothing like this. The winter, again, has been very mild. Last winter we had just 10 days with snow and day and night frost in february and snow (but without real cold) in january. I would love to see this over here but it is becoming more and more rare. HJave fun with it!

      @@zef27 it is called lake-effect snow. We have it here to, it is from the North Sea not exactly a lake either but that is how it is called. After the American Great Lakes, where the name (I think) was first used for these kind of snowshowers. So it is just a name for the Phenomenon.

      In The Netherlands all roads are immediately treated when even the slightest frost is expected. So that is really, really often. Snow can be treated with salt too, but it fails when it is -7 C or colder. We have snowploughs etc but they can't reach every single road. Most people have wintertyres or allseasons (which tend to be virtually as good as wintertyres, I have them) but the few that don't get stuck or cause accidents. In countries like Greece, where inlower areas snow is not so common I bet it causes a lot of trouble. On the other hand snow is not that exceptional in Athens. I have seen pictures of the Acropolis in snow more than once.

      @@SYldz67 yeah I know near Kars etc it is really cold because it is also really high. Much colder than where I live for sure. Winters have warmed up considerably over here in the last 30 years. Not a single winter has been severe in this century (we have cold, severe, very severe and extreme so severe is not even that cold). It is simply beyond belief nowadays to know that we have had months where the temperature simply failed to get above zero. So it was freezing, day and night the whole month (example february 1947). Or march months where from 10-20 march with -10 C. Not at night, but during the day. That is totally impossible now. I envy your climate!

      @@LADmob @LADmob - UNSEEN Walks thats actually not correct. It does snow in Athens, in fact based on other Greeks I talked to, it used to snow much more frequently in Athens but now rarer due to climate change, but it does snow, if not in the center, then certainly in the suburbs. Maybe not heavy snow as described in your video tho. I should send you pics from our backyard from a month ago where everything. including the outdoor eating table is completely covered in snow. lol Its the same as these heats that Greece is experiencing now, it was never so hot during summer in the Balkans, now it is. Btw, Im from the Balkans originally. ;)

    When cold air masses move across the Aegean Sea, the warm and moist air above the sea rises, cools, and condenses into clouds. As these clouds move towards the land, they release their moisture in the form of snow when the temperature is low enough. This phenomenon is known as the "sea-effect snow" or "maritime-effect snow" and it is similar to the effect which is often observed in regions with large bodies of water, such as the Great Lakes region in North America. People in the comments say that this is not a heavy snowfall but they are wrong. According to the USA National Weather Service, a heavy snowfall is typically defined as a snowfall rate of at least one inch (2.54 cm) per hour, sustained for at least two hours. The snowfall rate of ''Elpida'' snowstorm exceeded 10cm per hour in some areas, leading to the accumulation of over 40cm of snow in parts of the city of Athens, especially in the eastern suburbs in less than 16 hours.
    Sea-effect snow is not a rare phenomenon for the eastern parts of Greece, particularly in regions such as Euboia, Voiotia, and Attiki but the amount of snowfall can vary from year to year. Athens is surrounded by mountains which act as a natural barrier and provide a degree of protection from extreme weather events but the northern suburbs of Athens are located at higher elevations than the city center, and therefore they are more prone to snowfall.

      @@snowstorm1936 yes! We also get lake effect,well sea effect snow in Eastern England & Scotland,if the conditions are perfect for it,& we get bitter Arctic or Siberian air on a NorthEasterly or Easterly wind crossing the North Sea. ❄️❄️☃️⛄ All East facing coasts of Europe get this sea effect snow,even places like Barcelona,now & then...but obviously the coasts further away from the East & North,get this less often than other areas.The Black Sea coast of Northern Türkiye,Istanbul included,& the coasts of Bulgaria & România get heavy sea effect snow from the Black Sea,usually at least twice per Winter. ❄️❄️☃️⛄
