    The Ford Mustang Mach 1 is a performance-oriented option package[1] of the Ford Mustang, originally introduced in August 1968 for the 1969 model year. It was available until 1978, returned briefly in 2003, 2004, and most recently 2021.
    As part of a Ford heritage program, the Mach 1 package returned in 2003 as a high-performance version of the New Edge platform. Visual connections to the 1969 model were integrated into the design to pay homage to the original. This generation of the Mach 1 was discontinued after the 2004 model year, with the introduction of the fifth generation Mustang.
    Ford first used the name "Mach 1" in its 1969 display of a concept called the "Levacar Mach I" at the Ford Rotunda. This concept vehicle used a cushion of air as propulsion on a circular dais.
    For 1971, Ford reduced the content of the Mach 1. The standard features of the model were as follows:
    SportsRoof body style with unique "05" VIN code & "63R" body code on the door tag
    Color-keyed urethane front "spoiler" bumper & front fender and hood trim
    Honeycomb grille in black w/sportlamps
    Argent or black "Mach 1 - MUSTANG" decals on fenders
    Argent or black stripe and "Mach 1" decal on the trunk lid
    Argent or black lower body accent paint
    Bright trim at lower body paint line
    E70-14 white sidewall tires w/ hub caps & trim rings on 7" wide steel wheels
    Color-keyed dual racing mirror w/driver side remote
    Honeycomb taillight panel applique with bright trim
    Unique pop open gas cap
    F-code 302-2V engine w/3 speed manual transmission
    Competition Suspension (HD springs & shocks), variable quick-ratio steering box if ordered with P/S
    Base Mustang vinyl interior
    Flat hood - the NACA scooped hood was a no-cost OPTION for the base engine
    In 1971, the Mach 1 was available with three 351 Cleveland engines; the H-code 2-V, the M-code 4-V, and beginning in May 1971, the Q-code 351CJ (Cobra Jet or GT engine). M & Q code engines were produced concurrently up until the end of 71 model year production. There were also two 429ci options, the C-code CJ (Cobra Jet) & J-code CJ-R (Cobra Jet - Ram Air). Buying the optional "Drag Pak" 3.91 (V) or 4.11 (Y) rear gears turned either 429 into a "Super Cobra Jet", with a solid lifter cam, Holley 780cfm carb and special rotating assembly with forged pistons.
    One of the most recognizable features of the '71-'73 Mach 1s is the hood design with dual scoops. The hood was a no-cost option on the 302 cars and standard on all others. The basic hood had non-functional NACA ducts, but when ordered with the Ram Air option, it became functional. The Ram Air option included a vacuum-controlled door inside each scoop, and a fiberglass under-hood 'plenum' that directed cool, outside air through a modified, rubber-ringed air filter housing and into the carburetor. The ram-air option also included a pair of 1970 Mach1-style chrome twist hood locks and a two-tone hood paint treatment in either 'matte black' or 'argent' (matte silver), which coordinated with the decals and striping. The option also received either a "351 RAM AIR" or "429 RAM AIR" decal on each side of the hood, depending upon the engine ordered.

    Your videos inspired me to start building again about 2 1/2 years ago after not touching a kit for 20 years. You demonstrate that it’s possible to build a great looking shelf model without spending days, weeks, or even months. I’ve been down that road and your path is more fun.

    I'm always learning a new way to do something with a model. Just little things you put
    in each video. I always look forward to each video, no matter what the build is? It's like

    Late 1970 a "guy" at work bought a 1971 MACH 1 GT350 in Ford Metallic Green. Five of us would cram in and drive a few miles to the local Greasy Spoon. We'd always get the window booth and stare at the car during lunch - like we all owned it. Except for the Ford Metallic Green, you nailed the kit - right down to the cramped 3 person vinyl back seat, designed for two. Great job - nice memory flogger - big Thank You for this build.

    Great review Chris. After being out of the model building hobby for 35+ years, coming back, seeing you use Sharpie Markers for accent is an awesome idea. I really enjoy your videos. I haven’t done modeling since I was a kid. Now I have a grandkids to do models with. I recently picked up a 1978 AMT Ford pick up. Recently had an uncle passed away that had 79 1 ton with a hot rod motor. So matching his custom copper paint job he had was a little tough. Came out pretty good though. I mounted the body on a RC crawler chassis. The new paints are amazing no need to break out the airbrush. Thanks for the info on decals. It will come in handy on the Porsche with all the decals I have to do. I have also been painting mini Z Bodies they are very detailed and fun to build.

    A lot of the packages were dealer install and the hipo cars came with different makeups from the factory. I have a 68' "GT" - unfortunately, it is a dealer GT - not a factory GT. According to the vin, it was just a white 351 4b. Paperwork shows it came with a special hood, and the dealer did the rest. You could have bought a plain jane GT with no stripes - or the dealer could add them. Whatever it takes to sell the car. I once pulled up along side a 69 Olds. It was yellow, no stripes, regular, black soft-top. Looked like grandma's car unless you happen to see the 442 badge on it. Some folks like liked sleepers. My dad used to say that when the wife was in on buying a car, you got a sleeper. Great build....never seen FFP done on the whole car....thanks for that.

      You're right in terms of mechanics, but im pretty sure "4 valve" and "2 valve" was the marketing term for the 4 and 2 barrel versions of an engine. Athough i may be wrong about that since i dont know my fords like i know my mopars.

    • @pat931
      @pat931 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most all push rod engines from this era didn’t have 4 valves per cylinder. They had 2. He’s right. It means venturi which is a part of the carb.

    I had a 1971 Mach 1 in the early 1980's. The ONLY option mine came with was a C4 automatic transmission. The base engine was 302-2V and transmission was the 3-speed manual. I know you painted it a champaign gold, but it looks like what Ford called Light Metallic Pewter, the color mine was. I have the Otaki 1/12th scale kit completed. I think I bought it in 1984, maybe '85, NIB from a hobby shop. The gas tank looks like it is supposed to be a battery holder for a couple of AAA's. It included a plastic knob in the gas tank that looks like it was intended to be a twist on, twist off rotary switch, but there were no electronics included, not any instructions on how to do so.

    Hi. I love your videos n style of presentations. I just turned 59 years old and have been buying model cars n trucks like crazy cause I want to get back into model building after 50 years. It’s too cold to use spray cans and I’m anxious to get started. I thought of starting with the 65 Fairlane Modified stocker racer. Since it’s too cold I thought of hand brushing the whole thing. I thought of using enamel paint since I’ve read it dries smoother and last longer. It’ll be the poor man’s race car since it won’t be perfect. Any suggestions for me on brushes, primer, paint, technique, etc?

    Most people either love or hate the 71-73 but it's my favorite style. The fastback roof reminds me of a Pantera. I have a few variations of this kit and will be looking forward to adding this one as well. As always you do a great job on your builds and I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

    I thought that when you were showing the Parts Pak ( wheels and tires ) at the beginning of the video, you would have used the gold-line tires.
    That would have really made the tires stand out - but the body and rims color may have gone with a more yellowish gold tone. Someone may try that.

    Ok, so I broke down and bought one. OMG the body alone is going to take a bunch of work. There is all kinds of flash, the ejector pin marks a 3/8" in diameter or more on both the roof and the interior well. Finally, on the rocker panel just behind the driver's front wheel is a crater where it looks as though a large piece of sprue or runner was wiggled off instead of cut. It's going to take some strong, heavy filler to hide that sin. Tamiya putty won't do.

    Awesome job and great video! My question, if you don't mind, is about adding details on the painted body. While adding details with the silver Sharpie, or any other details, what happens if you accidentally hit the painted body? Do you mask off the mistake and repaint the area? Since there is no bottled color for the body spray, how can you touch up mistakes?

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can rub the Sharpie with a Qtip dipped in a little rubbing alcohol CAREFULLY and it comes right off.

    Beautiful job on your Mustang! When you were showing us the parts tree's, I saw the main roll cage hoop, the driver's side bars and a support bar. I never saw the passenger side door bars that were in the original kit. Does this release not have the complete roll cage? I enjoy building road race and round track cars

    • @TN-Vols-Fan
      @TN-Vols-Fan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Turns out I can answer my own question. No, this kit does not contain the entire roll cage. You'll get the rear hoop, the driver's side bars and some of the support bars, that's it. If you want to build the road race option, you'll be fabricating the passenger side of the roll cage.

      I quickly rub it off with a Qtip. Almost like sanding it off gently.

      Boss 351 was a 02 body code (Sports roof). Mach 1 was a 05 body code. The biggest obvious difference would be the front bumper. Sports roof cars had chrome bumpers, Machs had color keyed urethane bumpers. All Bosses were 4-speeds. There is only 1 1971 Boss 302 prototype in existence. In 1971 the Boss 351 was the only Boss package sold.

    From what I understand, this '71 'stang kit is a "kitbash" of the kits that were made of this model of 'stang ('71, '72, '73) and that would explain the lefover parts.
    Seems like a nice kit, but I've heard, oh, so many horror stories from pals who did previous releases of that kit, that I rather wait for Revell's release of their '71.

      The biggest ( problem ) with kit and many of AMT/MPC Ford’s is the in-ACCURACY of the under-hood area ! Not factory stock by no means . Period. And speaking of engines ... this kit as well as the previous issue Bond 007 car ( that had a 429 SCJ engine ) is that both available engines , one is a Boss429 the other is a 390 ... neither of which was available from the factory in ‘71-73 .
      Ya that kits box’s art work says 351 ... but it’s NOT !
