Rabbit shooting with an air rifle

  • What do you do about springtime rabbit control when the dogs and the ferrets are on sabbatical? Simon Whitehead has the answer
    Rabbits love a safe environment, with plenty of food, at this time of year - I decided to make a permanent hide in a safe, fenced-off corner of the paddock. It blends into the countryside: an unobtrusive, natural-looking, safe and comfortable hide where I can sit and shoot with the one rifle I use almost as much as I deploy my ferrets.
    The hide was made in advance and built to last. Not only will the rabbits become accustomed to it as they feed in the spring sunshine, but from inside I can quickly remove any newcomers to the area. I used some spare rabbit fence posts to make the rifle rest, ensuring that I had the right shooting position. Constructed around this rest is a mixture of netting and ivy so that, from a few yards away, the hide goes unnoticed. Ivy is good, as it retains that fresh-looking greenness for a while.
    I filled the rifle with air from my bottle. The FX has an air regulator fitted, ensuring every shot has the same pressure. This gives a consistently accurately placed pellet, good for four refills of my 10-shot magazine.
    Once in position, I put on my face veil and gloves. I was tempted to wear some face paint under my glasses but, after seeing some footage of this veil, I saw no reason to change.
    As I stared intently through the perfectly constructed letterbox on my hide, I recalled previous shooting sessions when I missed a couple of “easy” rabbits. So I went back to basics. I checked my rifle’s zero at my usual 35 yards using a 16g Diabolo pellet. I charted its performance every five yards from 10 to 50. My rifle pumps out a consistent 24ft/lb, considered perfect for the rabbiting game. By using a 16g pellet, I was getting the balance right between pellet power and pressure, without distorting the pellet.
    I was avoiding inaccuracy caused by too much power or incompatible weight of pellet for that rifle and poundage per foot. Shooting low at 10 yards rising to zero at 35 before dropping off to 50, my arc of accuracy was recorded to illustrate how I needed to compensate by raising or dropping the cross-hairs.
    Experience confirms that I can easily drop a rabbit at 60-plus yards in the right conditions, but my problem was at the 10- to 20-yard range. Complacency had crept in but, by going back to basics, I could see where I had been going wrong.
    A perfect combination of the Cyclone and the 16g pellet delivers the right energy to kill while being light enough to be streamlined, delivering a slightly flatter trajectory. A pellet that hits its target will do its job, which is obviously preferable to one that misses because it is too fast and inconsistent. Velocity and power aren’t everything - accuracy and consistency will always bag you more bunnies. Gravity dropped my quarry in its shadow and, as it rolled over, the other rabbits ran for home.

    After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

    To anyone who says this is cruel, If you see a rabbit digging holes in a paddock, and a beautiful horse having to be put down (shot in the head) because it stepped in the rabbit hole and broke a leg, which is the most cruel?
    Rabbits are cute, but a menace and must be controlled, plus they make excellent eating.

      Anyone who shoots and cares about the quarry enough to do the job as quickly and painlessly as possible will take a headshot every time. Instant oblivion is far preferable to a body shot where the rabbit can run into cover or its warren to die slowly.

    I shoot rabbits with an air rifle so I understand how to do it and I agree with almost everything in this video, the only bit I can't get on board with is the chest shot. For me, it's a head shot or no shot, a chest shot doesn't gauruntee an quick, humane kill, I was brought up to respect my quarry and that in my opinion is unnessecary suffering. If that bag is one or two smaller for the day, that's a price worth paying for consistently quick kills

    • @wibble1999
      @wibble1999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      totally on board with all parties here.... hence my question to Simon. The point you make about the dumping of energy from a 24ftlb .22 is the heart of my question. normally id be concerned with "body shots". saw a professional adviser to basc and gamekeepers advocation the .22 airgun as suitable for foxes!!!!....thats about as far as my flexibillity goes.

      Head shots are best i agree, but heart shots are just as effective even with a 12ft/ib gun at the correct range.
      The only reason head shots are preffered is if youre gonna eat it!

      @@armyoutcast846 absolutely agree 👍
      By the way remember one of the first hunting sessions with a bow:just made a good squeaky gutter:right between ass and genitals and exit right before the ribcage!So that bitch ran to it's hole but an arrow just made it not fit and when I came it was squeaking and trying to escape but was just not reaching the ground with it's legs!So I decided not to put it down but simply held it,pulled out the arrow and put it into the bag for live rabbits!So about hour and a half this squeaky bitch,that stayed alive for actually that long,was happily fed live to one of a huge number of rattlesnakes that my ex-girlfriend used to own!So half an hour more of suffering for a little squeaky bitch was also satisfying to see and hear!

    Out lamping the other day and the land owner assured me that her donkeys/horses would be put away. I turn up, the horses are gone (I thought), see the first rabbit (mixxy one out in the middle of the first paddock) put the lamp on it and pull the trigger. The zero must have been knocked in the back of the car because I put the shot off to one side hitting the rabbit quite far back. A donkey (coming from a position where I couldn't originally see it) ran up to the rabbit and John Ceena'd it, no joke. Trampled on it, picked it up in it's mouth and shook it about, dropped it, sat on it, squeezing its legs together to crush it… it went full on bonkers! I have never seen anything like it. The rabbit was screaming like mad! When the donkey finally let it go and it was long dead by this point, i went to inspect what was left of it, being careful not to receive the same treatment, and threw it into the hedge for the foxes. I have no clue what happened, maybe the rabbit was making a noise I couldn't hear but the Donkey could and triggered it into beast mode. It was like Chuck Norris v Kermit the frog. I cannot think of any situation in which a greater battering to any object could occur.

    FX is a nice platform to start from ,he set a standard in precision, wash( wd40 bath then dry off ) pellets checking damage removing any lose swarf .scrimp your rifle as it's sharp line moving is very noticeable to quarry , keep up field skills like stalking ,distances plus elevations, the latter really matters as much as distance , build a RDA ( round drop arch) in your mind so you know a shot at 20 yards with 3ft elevation is that on the reticle, same as you know 60 yards with minus 4ft is that on the reticle, practice ,practice, practice , aim for clean kill first shot every shot , people who hunt know when the shot is clean and clear pulling the trigger when they have the skill set to make it clean kill. Only losers make unethical shots out of there skill level that will mame the quarry .animal rights would have a field day at anyone who mame animals and rightly so ,they ain't against culling so long as it's not an idiot pulling the trigger maming the animal .look at foot and mouth incident when animal rights said we agree to culling but don't agree to this - showed a vet with a shotgun running after sheep scaring them and not making clean kills first shot .practice long range as if you've got an accurate rifle and decent supressor you can cull at a distance and the rest of them are unaware your taking them out one after another .always be mindful not to just waste culled quarry , they a lot of people who will take them off your hands , like ferret keepers and even likes of zoo's if you are like me you only hit headshots so all the lead if any will be only in the head which can be disposed off . Hunt to pest control knowing the land owner knows your doing him a great favour and to the people who are greatfull to get the quarry

      I77 have a natural flatter trajectory than a 22 ,so if your accurate then you can shoot a little further with less RDA , work out your f/lb an it's OK for 12 f/lb to kill upto 50/60 yards if you have the skill to make clean kills everytime

I find a heart shot from a distance is a bit more difficult. I don't think I've ever hit a rabbit pigeon. Squirrel or anything in the head and seen it escape. But that's just my opinion and experience. Anyway thanks for sharing your video. And I'm glad you didn't call everything you shot a HE /. HIM. Like on most pest control videos. Lol. I subscribed. 👍

      I would presume he has the board say with one long horizontal line and say 5 vertical lines along the board , on level ground in snipe position horizontal to the board starting left to right and move back in measured increments , 20,30,40,50,60 yards you need to learn elevation as it massively matters in air rifle hunting , so have 6 long horizontal lines with 5 vertical ones . Place the board at 6ft plus your horizontal (shooting into something like a hill ) do your distance, then next horizontal line do it at + 3ft , next at + 1ft ,next at true horizontal, then go down in - elevation , build a mind graph of your rda ( round drop arch) with elevations ,

    Is it possible to take a rabbit using a 12ft/lb or do you need a FAC rifle?

    • @ferretWhitehead
      @ferretWhitehead 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MakingTheCut No, 12 ft/lb is ample at a sensible distance but I have a FAC rated rifle as I use this in a awful lot of situations I require a wee bit more distance and knock down ability.

    Where can I get that rifle and did it come with the scope? How do I get the gas recharged again?
    How much were these?
    I’m so tired of finding my tulips and Lilly buds along with my blueberry plants eaten.
    In fact I’d even gut, skin and feed them to my dog

      @squaretorttle9400 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can order the rifle online or you could try to find it in a local airgun or sporting goods store. To change the gas you will have to either manually pump it up with a special hand pump or buy a scuba tank to fill the rifle up but keep in mind that you will have to refill the scuba tank itself, which you can do at a local diving shop

    Eny 800 FPs .177 rifles vs 600 fps. 22 rifles = Rabit 🐰 hunting which best sir ? =

    • @gambet0007
      @gambet0007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both can do the job, but looking at your name you are probably Indian, in India .22 is requiring license and either way so is hunting. As long as someone complaints, 25k fine and 3 years jail.
      For longer range shots, I suggest .177, penetrates more and more likely to kill, in closer range .22 can be far more devastating, can even go through steel cups

    I note the age of this vid', its good shooting, but try the latest FAC .25 FX Maverick, mine has been tuned to 65ft lb using 35grn Zan slugs at 1050fps, you will find its a huge upgrade on your 24ft lb & more than capable of knocking rabbits over at 75 yards........As THE man says " Dont be mean, kill them clean".
    Good hunting.

    No wonder you have so much bullet drop after 30 or 40 yards, why use such a heavy grain of pellet? 16 grain is way to heavy unless you plan on using it for 30 yards or less possibly even 20 yards, I always use 7 or 8 grain pellpax

    I am from chicago got tired of these bunnies. Especially the juvenile bunnies snap the new plants. We chicken wired the area where we grow. These all happen by few rascals start hunting down coyotes, wolves for fun. now the predators are slowly fading away from Midwest. That's why more deer and bunnies population erupting the man made vegetation. Lately I do see a fox family wandering at night and now the bunnies are lot lesser than before.

    I have a 7,5 joule air rifle where should i aim to get the best results for a killshot ?
    I read somewhere that 7,5 joules is not enough for a heart shot

    • @szkaly5241
      @szkaly5241 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      with a 7.5 J air rifle you should only hunt for smaller birds because you can kill them quickly but for bigger preys like rabbits i recommend upgradeing your rifle or buying a new one ... all in all if you shoot a rabbit in the head with your rifle there is a chanche it reches the brain and killes it but if not it will die slowly and painfully
