STORYLINE:
Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox men blocked a major highway in central Israel for two hours on Thursday, to protest a Supreme Court decision ordering young religious men to enlist for military service.
Military service is compulsory for most Jewish men and women in Israel.
But politically powerful ultra-Orthodox parties have won exemptions for their followers to skip military service and instead study in religious seminaries.
This long-standing arrangement has bred widespread resentment among the broader public - a sentiment that has grown stronger during the eight-month war against Hamas.
Over 600 soldiers have been killed in fighting, and tens of thousands of reservists have been activated, harming their careers, businesses and family lives.
The Supreme Court this week said the system of exemptions amounts to unequal treatment of different segments of the population and ordered the army to begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men.
Ultra-Orthodox parties and their followers oppose any change in the system.
The parties are key members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's governing coalition and could potentially force new elections if they decide to leave the government in protest.

@@MavonEast In Israel, the majority of orthodox Jewish men work, so it's not true that women are the sole bread winners in most cases. Additionally, there are Hassidic sects where the exceptions study not the rule.
In any case, the value is to study so long as it's possible. That means if one is not cut out for studying long term, one doesn't. If one's family is in a bad place financially, one works.

@@anthonythomas1504thousands fought & died for the north. The army of the Potomac was largely made up of immigrants irish & German supplied from the ports on east coast. As they disembarked goverment hired hawkers handed then a $50 dollar note while escorting them to enlistment tables. Those hawkers worked on piece meal. The southern irish and Scots having been here early on as indentured servants or released from Georgian prison colony as free Americans enlisted for the confederate cause.

It’s very sad that it has come to this. Wish it wasn’t the case. But when you are actively being HUNTED… you can’t expect protection from anyone else… you MUST PROTECT YOURSELF. They’re not being drafted to protect some fat cat politicians or “VIPs”. They’re being asked to draft to protect themselves… their own lives and that of their families. That’s the wonder of Israel… there’s no “military industrial complex”, the army is not a “profession” as in the USA and the west. Each soldier is fighting for himself and his family back home. They know that If they don’t go, no one else will step in and protect them. In Israel everyone serves - from the Uber rich and “privileged” - the prime ministers son to the farmers son - and everyone is 100% equal and gets treated as such. The only exception were these ultra orthodox ppl. But unfortunately, they must participate in their own protection and safety.
