My father did a mission like this in WW2. Went to the guy's CO and explained the situation. Went to the guy and told him he was wanted back at headquarters for questioning. He was not suspected of any wrongdoing but was under arrest and would be leaving immediately and without question. Once to safety, they told him the truth. That story is more rational but less likely to sell tickets.
It was a fictional movie, Take a break. Nice to hear about Father Sampson and Niland. Glad his third brother survived being a Japanese POW. That was hell enough.
One of the biggest gaffs in the movie is that a squad of Rangers doesn't walk around looking for a private in any unit that might not even still be alive. A close second is a squad or half strength platoon would be left to defend a bridge. They'd blow it and engineers would build another one once the area was secured. Third, privates don't give orders to captains. If ordered to bring him back and he refused They'd hog tie him and carry him off. But it's still a great movie
The paratroops were badly spread out. You don't assault an artillery battery with a couple (or more) squads pulling security, but E/2-506 did it at first with less than a dozen.
Fr. Sampson was almost murdered by the Waffen SS while a prisoner. Fr. Sampson went on to become Chief of Chaplains in the 60s. Quite a fellow. There is no evidence though of being recommended for the Medal of Honor.
in the scene where the military come to ryan's to deliver the sad news there is a phone attached to the wall and is a colored dial tone with a coiled cord. in 1944? really?
So my question is, why did Steven Spielberg make the movie like this? I think it would have been a better more real and true to life movie. Tom hanks is a big liberal wacko. Maybe him playing this part and the way the movie went, tries to make Tom hanks look a certain way. I’m sure that there are more actors that have played parts like this that really can’t stand guns and wars and things like that

Great stuff...thank you for highlighting the story of Father Sampson...who has not gotten as much recognition as he probably deserves.💯👍

GREAT JOB
Great story ❤
There was a TV movie about Sampson. It also had Richard Jaeckel, veteran of countless war movies. It's on you tube under the title of Paratroop Padre.
Saving Private Ryan is a great production, good acting and memorable scenes 8/10.
The plot though is bonkers, Hollywood nonsense 2/10.

Fiction thats Hollywood, Spielberg, & Hanks
What a strong man of God
This fictional person you call god doesn't exist..its all about the man next to you that does all the work
*_There was no real guy who saved private ryan because there was no private ryan._*

So he didn't have to pay the family money.
