  • Throughout history, dogs have accompanied man at work and play. Even during wartime, dogs functioned as mascots and trained in a variety of jobs to protect and save lives on battlefields throughout the world.
    In this series, we focus on the roles dogs performed during times of war in support of our ground troops. From WWI when dogs served as mascots in the trenches of France to WWII when they were highly trained to perform jobs a soldier could not do that protected our troops from harm and helped to defeat the enemy. You will hear the stories from veteran war dog handlers of the Korean War and the Vietnam War about the roles their heroic dogs played to save their lives and the lives of others under extreme combat conditions.
    With the global war on terror, military working dogs continue to be an invaluable lifesaving asset serving with our special operations community.
    Since WWII, Military Working Dogs have consistently played a vital role in times of peace and war, oftentimes paying the ultimate price for their service and sacrifice.
    This is a War Dog’s Story - giving a voice to the voiceless.

    These dogs need to be celebrated just as much as our men and women in uniform. 3:50 I was fostering a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Apollo. He was an amazing pup. It took me 6 months to put two and two together to realize that he was alerting me to an upcoming Migraine. I didn't even know dogs could alert to Migraine. It was that day that I adopted him. We went through medical dog training, and he became an official Medical Alert Dog in 2018. What he was detecting was the dump of serotonin that my brain was doing 2-3 hrs. before the pain would start. He did this all on his own. He was never before trained in anything like this. He was born into a dog fighting ring and used as a bait dog. When they were done with him, he was used as a junk yard dog, left outside with no shelter. I saved his life, and he saved mine. RIP Apollo. I love you buddy and miss you everyday.
    Always remember God spelled backwards is Dog.

      Fortunately now days things are a lot better because of animal rescue groups helping soldiers reunite with their K-9 partner. These animal rescue groups also helped soldiers bring home their furry companions that they adopted while surviving overseas. I think it’s lest that should be done.
      Here’s a quick story;
      Many of squads have adopted a dog or three in Iraq. These dogs would wait at units huts for their new pack mates to return for the day. The dogs and their human pack mates would greet each other and enjoy their evening together and other any other spare time they could find. Then one night a little after lights out the dogs outside would alert the dogs inside they might be something off and after few more moments they start barking like crazy which was unusual. That’s woke up their human pack mates and they then grab their rifles to see what was wrong. They just got outside when the insurgents started attacking the barracks area. But thanks to their K-9 pack mates early warning no one died and only a few wounded. There was some grumbling about the dogs from command but after the attack they stopped grumbling. The soldiers found a way to get the dogs shipped back to the states (often at high personal expense) to where a few of members of each squad adopted them into their families.

    • @anthonyzullo
      @anthonyzullo ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If they are enlisted, you HAVE to recover their remains and bring them back to the states for proper buriel. If you found the dogs in your duty then yes, you leave them behind. I currently have 7 still enlisted and 3 purple hearts as well as a few other medals for their duty.

      Unfortunately, in the military and police, they are seen as pieces of kit. They will be sent in to do the job humans can't, or if it's too dangerous to send in a human, the dog goes. That's just how it is. Of course, most of the handlers will form a bond with them but commanders and higher ups see them as more expendable than humans.
      We live in the country and one time we got mice. They got into the house, went up the walls and into a spare bedroom that was rarely used so the door was kept closed. One day a mouse appeared. We let Lily, our little cat(still a kitten) go to work and set traps. she killed 5 or 6 and we trapped about 8 or 9 in the space of a week, then she finished the others off over the next few months.
      She was only about seven months old but she turned out to be an excellent mouser. At first we were really happy about her doing the number on the mice, but then we started to worry about her health if she ate one. I was terrified of her catching something. I was constantly watching her behaviour to be sure the mice were taken from her as soon as she killed them.
      I wouldn't be able to do the type of work that would endanger my dog. I just couldn't.

    Nobody seems to ask about the puppies who were in training to become war dogs. My mother worked in Germany for the British Army veterinary war dogs. The young puppies were first sent to foster homes until they reached 6 months or so. Then they returned to the army training center. Those that made the grade were incorporated in the army; those that didn't were deemed too dangerous to go to family homes (yes, I understand) and put down, not always in a humane way. I visited the center one day and saw a line of puppies hanging from trees (dead or dying). I understand the bond that soldiers have with their dogs, but hopefully those dogs that return from battle are given a decent retirement.....

    When operators are outside the wire and their K9 buddies are in field. you can bet every k9 handler treats the dogs as brothers as they would their comrades in arms. A dog is more than just another weapon at the front. the dog is saviour warrior, healer and mentor and a soldiers best friend. both in the fight and outside. It is hugely important we honour these brave souls who served and helped bring many of their brothers home safe.
    THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SERVICE.

    We have two German Shepherds and I am the president of our local club. Thank you for making this video. It is so important that breeders and sport people understand that this is the most important job we have. Not to win a title in show or in IGP, but to use the former to select the best dogs for service and that will save lives. ❤ The dogs are not equipment and deserve a beautiful retirement. ❤

      Refreshing to hear from a responsible gsd breeder ! Idea is to improve the breed NOT JUST improve your bank bank balance. Unscrupulous breeders do rip people off & do irreparable damage to buyers of bad puppies. Long overdue to weed out breeders of genetically poor pups, or falsified pedigree papers. The vast majority of good gsd breeders really should jump on unscrupulous puppy farms and " name and shame" breeders of bad pups who do this over and over again. In Queensland Australia - controlling bodies for some dog breeders NEED to publicize bad breeders. The gsd deserves no less. Many thanks to all the breeders of good gsd pups, they improve the breed.

    Just hit me with the one picture @ 3:58. Having a combat dog would mean you would never be on your own, sleeping, using the restroom, always having someone watching your back that NEVER gets lazy and refuses to let go of a job until it is complete. That must make soldiers best friends and battle buddies if nothing else. I've heard interviews where men can talk about their best friends being blown up in front of them and not shedding a tear, but one combat dog and his soldier, and I've never seen a man hold a straight face.

    This is incredibly painful. If you know anything about GSDs, you know how intelligent and sensitive they are. They were created to form bonds with their people and protect them to death. To simply abandon them after creating that bond has got to be the cruelest thing those dogs could ever experience. It's inhumane to the dogs and to their soldiers.

    For many months, we have worked on trying to get a major network to pick up the War Dog’s Story documentary. While the initial feedback on our trailer was great, none of the networks wanted to tackle the subject. From the feedback that we received, the feelings were the same - there was no interest in war stories or the dogs in them. We decided to move forward without the help of the major networks in order to get the War Dog’s Story completed. And so we are now excited to announce our official crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo to honor these stories, and the dogs and people in them.
    Much of the film, and 39 interviews, have been shot already. With the funds we secure, we will be completing the last of the interviews that are needed. How many episodes will go into the series ultimately depends on how much we’re able to raise with the crowdfunding campaign. Once the edit is complete, we’ll be submitting the documentary series to a distributor who we have worked with previously. Other shows that we have produced have streamed on platforms like Amazon Prime, Tubi, and many other services in the past so we’re extremely confident that The War Dog’s Story will end up on numerous streaming platforms as well.
    Please help us spread the word to everyone you know about our crowdfunding campaign. Every like, share and contribution will help us cross the finish line. People can donate to the project via the IndieGoGo page or directly on the War Dog’s Story web site, and we also have PayPal and Venmo options for contributing as well. From the start, these stories that are being told are what matter the most to us and we can really use your help in letting everyone know about the campaign and the film itself. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
    Thank you,
    Bri Coelho

    My 3rd German Boxer was my Bodyguard. I have no clue how many Traffic Tickets he helped me avoid with his Brother. I always have a pair. =) The Officers would approach my Truck after a 125 Km an hour in a 50 zone on a Sunday. I pulled into the bank parking lot and dropped driver window and then the Vehicle rocked as Jagger and Tulley were defending me. They asked me to reach outside the Vehicle to provide documents. Ended up the Sgt. gave the issue of serving this (Illegal Tint) ticket to his Constable. I reached outside the Vehicle to accept and sign. I thanked them very much for the graces and we parted ways. The Trucks windows would have been broken out in a heart beat if I dropped the rear windows. Jagger was (Rest my Baby Boy) Jet Black with one white Toe to trim his nails. With the Dark Tint the Officers were left with 2 options as they could not see him! Remove the driver and then shoot the dogs. (Probably I am armed with my .40 Cal) or! Just warn the owner and we all get home at the end of the day. I miss that Man of a Dog very much. I could look at him and he would know...(This is going sideways so Bark and take the Fawn and I will skirt the other way. I draw attention then Gloves Off my Son! Almost 12 years we scared the shit out of Interesting people. True Words as I am crying as I miss my Bodyguard. RIP Jagger Neiche Mair

    The difference here is that these dogs, these animals, are *innocents.* They don't understand politics, they don't understand why there is a conflict. What they do understand is their bond with their handlers, the unconditional love and unwavering devotion that makes them so eager to please, to learn, and to perform. Anyone who has experienced the love of a dog, let alone fought beside one, knows the pain of the loss, or even just the suffering, of that creature who looks to them for meaning and purpose. I wouldn't want to know a man who felt nothing for his dog. ='[.]'=
