When the best designed characters in your game can be described as "Guardians of the Galaxy rejects", something went very wrong during the conception phase.
I think theyve accepted that it will be a failure and are trying to get as much out of it as possible. Thats the only logical reason to launch this game and charge upfront for it. Make a few million and shut it down or at the very least release very little content for it but allow it to stick around to avoid taking a full L on it. I feel that Sony probably already has them working on something else by now.
Even ignoring all the unnecessary inclusive stuff, the characters are just not "cool" in any way. Most of them look like when you start an RPG and your gear is garbage and doesn't match yet.
remember when western games used to make cool bad ass characters... cool males and attractive females... now they go out of their way to make the most unappealing characters known to man
Overwatch's idea of diversity at first was cultural background. All characters behaved and sounded differently and their race was appropriate to where they came from. Concord's idea of diversity...change skin color (avoid white) , body structure and sexuality.
Except even with differing "body structures", their silhouettes are still the same blur of humanoid blobs. It's actually unreal how boring their shapes are
I think the biggest issue is the art style. I'm not sure what they are supposed to represent, but they look like the writers self inserted themselves as Cosplayers dressed like what they think a character in a game would look like. It's like Photorealism; it's well drawn and very realistic, but it's bad uninteresting art.
The characters look like they're already wearing skins, but all from different sets, because there's no theme or color that unite all the characters they look like they're from different games.
If everyone criticising you in the comments bought the game, they might see a noticeable increase in playerbase. Of course we are only talking about 10 or so people.
Haymar looks the finest and that's...still not high praise considering her overall boring look. Vale is fine, by virtue of being so unremarkable there's nothing to really say.
There are actual games that use ugly AS an artstyle to make a genuinely unique vibe and atmosphere to their gameplay, like Clash: artifact of chaos, Kenshi, and Cruelty Squad. This, this is not that. This is like seeing corporate art put through Unreal Engine 5

Considering nearly only males play games like these and barely any of these female characters are attractive who feels represented by this? Is any white person gonna be like "oh yeah I feel so represented by that generic stereotypical white guy I am totally gonna play that one!"? Same for people of colour etc.

The gameplay feels like Destiny which makes me wonder, why not come up with a hero shooter set in the Destiny world/lore with cool Destiny characters that tie in to future dlc/games? Or why not have this team work on a separate mode on Destiny? It's just so weird and seems like theyre trying to come up with something new instead of just leaning into the strengths of established IPs. Hell make a Hero Shooter/game with PlayStation IP's sprinkled in with new characters similar to the Smash Bros PlayStation fighting game. Just seems like PlayStation took the path of most resistance by greenlighting a new IP that is destined to crash and burn especially with such boring uninspired character design.
I came to see why this games is WOKE. Win for gamers overall though imo, showed the power we have with our wallets and how none of us want this type of nonsense
