I have been thinking of the same and the answer I got was that he did roles that actually matter. Unlike every other Varun Dhawan, Salman Khan or Ranbir Kapoor, he actually did roles in movies that were memorable and out-of-the-box and not merely meant for the box office. Of course, I may be forgetting his bad roles but I can't really remember any tbh.
