I'm an old woman and this song always makes me cry. Losing your religion means you can't take it anymore, you're at the end of your rope. You can't go on anymore. You've just given up. Trapped in a corner, no longer dreaming of an escape.

The images of welding the wings comes from the ancient Greek story of Daedalus (the father) and Icarus (the son). Daedalus made wings for himself and Icarus to fly and escape their prison island. But they were made with wax. Daedalus told Icarus not to fly too low (and crash into the sea) or too high (where the sun would melt the wax), which is a Stoic philosophy (the best life is one where you are not too sad or too happy but balanced) but Icarus flew too high, the sun melted his wax, and he fell into the sea.
The idea is Icarus was young and had a fantasy to become great and aim for the sun, like it was a paradise, but the fame and fortune of the sun burned him and destroyed his life. I think the song is about realizing the life you thought was perfect and happy, especially this other person in the song being happy (maybe an ex-lover?), is actually just a fantasy and not real, and he's realizing the sad truth and his life is falling apart by the knowledge.
That was my interpretation. I love hearing all of your thoughts as well. Thank you for these, as always.

Good example. Eddie in Tom Petty's "Into The Great Wide Open" is the one I was thinking about (also played by Johnny Depp who is himself also a kind of Icarus). But I think there are so many examples.

"(E)ven if you lose everything, don't lose hope." - Muharam
I have lost everything 3 times in my life. Everything. And everyone. To hope was to hurt more....yet I hoped for better. And I still do. God let me lose all those things so that I would find Him. I may never understand any of it, but I will continue to hope for better. Even if it is to spite myself.
Please give my love to these brothers, these teachers. Each one of you bless me every single time, and I am so very grateful for all of you. We need Y'all. The world needs Y'all. ❤

My only real critique is that there are no women involved any more. I do understand that the culture there is very different, but I'd love to hear their observations.

R.E.M. is indeed "Rapid Eye Movement" but while the band pronounces its name as R-E-M, they have stated that's not the meaning of the name. The discoverer of the sleep phenomenon reached out to the band to ask if that's what it meant but they deny it, saying that they picked it at random from a dictionary.

Just a side note, the images in the video are from Greek and Roman mythology. There is the scene of Leonardo da Vinci showing Icarus as an old man. There is another song that expresses the same idea as this, that when you reach the height, you can tumble back down to earth, that song is Shooting Star, and the words are "don't you know that you are a shooting star" about a boy named Johnny who wanted to become rich and famous as a rock singer and got there by cutting off all he knew of good people and good things.

Presenting your hosts, such humble and "simple" people, this varied selection, gives us the audience the opportunity to see their honest and real reactions. Music apreciation and honesty in the heart unites us, even more so when your guests express themselves with such clarity and respect in their opinions. And their contributions about feelings with each new song they listen to. It shows us, that living on opposite sides of the world, we are so different but at the same time very similar in our emotions. Please continue this fantastic project. I send you a cordial greeting from South America, to you and your distinguished guests my respect and appreciation.

This song works well even absent all context because it could actually not be about using a regional idiom, or it could be about a love interest that is female. It isn't. But it's universally appealing while being quite esoteric.

Very excellent song! Michael Stipe joined Brian Molko of the UK alternative rock band Placebo to do a duet in a beautiful and emotional song called "Broken Promise" in the '00s. I believe that is a great song to let the Tribal Elders listen to.

  • @michaelclements5793

From a music (not lyric) standpoint, this is the best example I know of a song in purely Aeolian mode, which is natural minor.
Usually the minor key involves some changing of scales (harmonic or melodic minor, bringing the leading tone to drive us to the tonic note) or even mode mixture (phrygian, with a lowered 2nd, is popular in heavy metal and drives us to the tonic from above instead of from below, as the leading tone does) to help give a song movement and direction.
In this song, we never deviate from that pure minor tone with its flat 7th, and the result is this beautiful darkness. It lingers, without escape, filling us, consuming us, in its sorrow. I love this song for this reason.

In case you are wondering the song is actually about the correlation between sexuality and faith from post a Judeo-Christian and pagan lense specifically in regard to homosexuality. The video is filled with traditional homosexual iconography, most of it dating back centuries. The lead singer is part of LGBT+ community and that played a big part in the writing of the song.

I love this channel and all the people doing the reactions. They are so warm, so thoughtful, and so insightful. I love that you have some different ages, but please add a woman into the mix. Women have a different perspective. I know you used to have a woman and she irritated you. She was very reluctant to speak her mind. That was either due to her personality, or due to her upbringing. If it was due to her personality, that means it should be easy to find another woman who can speak her mind. If it was due to culture and upbringing, that's all the more reason to bring a woman into the show, and ENCOURAGE her that here is a place she really can - for the first time - speak her mind. Just because you had one woman being shy and reluctant is no reason not to bring another woman on the show. That woman who used to be on the show is just one woman, and not representative of all. This is my one big complaint. In fact, I'm irritated enough, that I won't contribute monetarily again until you do bring in a representative of 50% of the people on earth.
