  • The woman with the shock of painted red hair, her body wrapped in a fur coat, and a pet monkey grinning and holding tight to her neck was #AnitaBerber She danced across the foyer of the #AdlonHotel of #Berlin #Germany during the #Weimar era, opened her sable coat and revealed her naked body underneath. Men leered, goggle-eyed. Women giggled or turned their heads in shock and embarrassment. There wasn’t much to embarrass the public in 1930s Germany - this was the era of #WeimarGermany an era of poverty and sin.
Anita Berber didn’t care. She liked to shock. She liked the attention. If she didn’t get it, she would shout and throw empty bottles or glasses on the floor. Berber was a dancer, an actor, a writer, and a model. She was called the “Goddess of the Night,” the “Priestess of Debauchery,” the very symbol of #Weimar decadence, and a drug-addled degenerate. She was all these things and more during her brief, sad life from 1899 until 1928.

She seems remarkably sad to me. Why should she be celebrated for destroying her life with drugs and alcohol? Is this simply because she took her clothes off on stage?

The NSDAP certainly did NOT encourage women to behave like Anita Berber. Their policies encouraged the exact opposite behaviour. Women were expected to marry and bear children in the Third Reich. There was some artistic nudity allowed in certain festivals and operas, but women were not encouraged to flout their sexuality otherwise.

You need to hit the history books. Berlin became the capital of "sin" after WWI. While the NSDAP was around, turned over from the German Workers' Party in 1920, that's just eight years before Berbars' death in 1928. Their conservative movement didn't bring them into full power until 1933, along with the help of the Great Depression. Never mind their own less then moral & ethical shenanigans' to get to power.

The Nat. Socialists most certainly didn't encourage young women to be like her. Precisely the opposite. They encouraged young girls to be fit and healthy, avoid cigarettes and drink, and above all remain virgins until marriage.

Conrad Veidt had a fairly noticeable acting career. He appeared in the movie cereals Batman in the 30's as the Joker. He later was in Casablanca with Humprey Bogard, Ingrid Bergman & Claude Rains, Veidt played the part of the German Major Strasser. A very solid actor.

I know my comment will not be well received but I find the last sentence by the narrator as the most revealing. If she was fat or ugly there most likely wouldn't be any memory of her. As long as a person is able to be sexualized he or she is valued as an artist by artists and gawkers alike.
