He should have been yelling at his offensive line for not reacting to the defense jumping TWICE, all any one of them had to do is flinch when the defense crosses the line and its a penalty on the defense.
It really hurt my heart to see not one the OL just reach out and touch the defenders when they jumped. This is basic smart football play you should have learned by high school.
I know it’s tough to understand the rule but Iowa states tight end moves when a defender was in the neutral zone. That is offsides and that is why Campbell freaked out

@Coop Gardiner you forgot to mention that the neutral zone is also up to the refs discretion. As long as there isn't contact between the linemen then they won't call it unless the ball gets snapped before they can get back. This was completely the centers fault. Especially the second one when the guy jumped in his face. Clearly he won't be making it to the nfl.

You explained it as confusing as possible for no reason.
1. Offensive linemen can't move or it's off sides
2. Defense CAN move & cross the line of scrimmage HOWEVER it will be offsides (and defense loses yards) IF
A. The ball is snapped while the defender is past the line

B. The defender hits the offensive player (or even touch them whatsoever)

The whole O-line should be ashamed. It's actually better that the center doesn't snap the ball there - too much risk of a defender getting back, or the refs just blowing the call. Then you have a snap before your QB is ready for it.
Ideally, your guards and tackles should all know that if a defender comes into the neutral zone, you immediately hit that defender. This forces the ref to throw a flag.

For anyone curious, there are two different targeting fouls:
9.1.3: No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.
9.1.4: No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.
So no, the fact that he used his shoulder instead of his head to make the hit is completely irrelevant. Hitting someone with your crown is illegal no matter where on the body you contact, hitting the helmet of an opponent is illegal no matter what part of the body you use to make the contact (technically the targeting rule doesn't include the leg or foot, but if you're roundhousing someone to the face, you're breaking a rule regardless and getting ejected).
As for the offsides, Jomboy is right. NCAA doesn't automatically blow for offside unless there's contact or there's an unimpeded run to the QB. Snap has to occur for the offside to be called in all other instances. This isn't high school.
thank you Falcon4242 for one of the best (if not THE best) explanations i have ever seen in a youtube sports video. as a high school and college baseball umpire, it never ceases to frustrate me that 99% of people--including, unfortunately, most coaches--do not know or understand the rule book, especially changes/updates/clarifications that happen from year to year. thank you for quoting the ACTUAL rule (what a concept) to help people understand how CORRECT the targeting call was in this instance. never mind that the receiver was 85% of the way to the ground and falling (backwards, i might add) and that no additional defensive contact was warranted or necessary. it was a clear case of a defensive player taking a malicious free shot at an offensive player. and mind you, i can accurately call the hit "malicious" without even dealing with "intent". the act speaks for itself; it is of no consequence what the defender may have been thinking. a decent and professional coach would recognize the validity of the call, WITHOUT EMOTION, and deal with the player at the appropriate time. the game goes on.
Been officiating for going on 7 years here HS Football, it's definitely 9.1.4, because of the fact that he targeted a defenseless player. That's the main indicator and i'm glad they called it as seeing how some guys might let that go. As for the coach I thought this video was hilarious lmao

@@jeffheyer7783 I agree it's a tough call at times because of the momentum going on. To the player's fault he has to determine how and where the player is going to land. It's actually sort of obvious to see the direction and how a player will move and land when mid air like this player was, which is why the player should have attempted to completely miss the tackle or escape from it (in NCAA if a player's butt, back, knee, elbow touch they're down, its not the NFL) but as seen on the review, not just from the referees on the field, but also a reviewing official they determines he made no attempt to let up and actually purposely hit the player with his shoulder. He knew how he was going to land, it was just a matter of how much he wanted to directly tackle him. This was a good textbook 9.1.4 call.

As an Iowa State fan this is true. When it’s someone like Jomboy I can usually shrug it off, but it almost always happens at least twice with the tv commentators and it’s so frustrating. Like it’s your fucking job to know these teams inside and out and you call Iowa State “Iowa”?

It doesn’t even have to be contact. Someone on the line just needs to jump up as if they would’ve been offside. Standing and pointing doesn’t count because the offensive line is allowed to do that pre snap.

I never played on the offense but we were always taught on the defense that when we jump dont touch them but beware of a center that is paying attention because they will just snap the ball if they see you. The center missed it.

@@evanlatoure763 NCAA rules state that if a player is in or beyond the neutral zone when the ball is legally snapped its an offside. All the offensive players where set so a snap would have been legal. Now granted it would be a live play or a dead play play but would never know. Either way its a free play as the offsides would have negated any out come.
A hard count is hoping for a touch and an offensive play to move which didn't occur. That failed but as I stated there was a second chance to get it back.
Iowa State has been in the bottom half of the Big 8/12 for decades. This coach has really turned them around. They beat OU earlier in the season. That’s a huge accomplishment since almost no one beats OU. He knew if Iowa State could beat OU in this championship game it would give the team and the school an unprecedented boost. Too bad when kids on the team get so pumped up they cause problems.

A couple of notes:
1) I'm glad college football changed the targeting ejection rule where the ejected player doesn't have to do the perp walk to the locker room.
2) Iowa st's offense should have known that for offsides to be called, if the defensive player doesn't touch the offense, then you have to snap the football while he's in the neutral zone. That's something high school teams know. How is a big 12 team unaware of this?
Or at least have a lineman respond by reaching out and touching the player that jumped off.

No, it was a hit on a defenseless player on his way to they ground. If you watch the whole play you can see the player decide to go for the hit. And don’t say that’s not what targeting is because it is a hit to the head of a defenseless player, which Stoops was. So by rule that was the right call.

Iowa is currently ranked 63rd and dead last in big ten recruiting with no serious targets left that can change that. Iowa State is ranked 27th with 3 more of their biggest targets predicted to commit within a week or two. You are right tho, it's all thanks to Campbell. Iowa=past. ISU=future.

Here is some more context, The center in this clip is hard of hearing and was told to only look down and listen. The stadium was very loud at that moment and im guessing he just couldn't hear a snap audio sense the hard count was clearly their to draw them offsides.

As a die hard Iowa State fan here is some more context, Matt Campbell (Coach) is always super calm and practically never loses his mind. This was by far and away the biggest game in Iowa State history and had so much emotion around it, He needed his players to stay calm and knows that the culture of the team is based around staying cool and players will keep calm after coach freaks out because he never does usually. It basically said I will get emotional now so you guys focus on the game and Ill worry about the refs. And if you watch the rest of the game it worked, the team did play better and calmed down and settled into the game more.
I know that explanation wasn't the best so sorry.
Nobody has mentioned that iowa state should have had a false start on the QB for bobbing his head. He did it both times. His whole body moved forward.
All players in the backfield can move before the ball starts moving and QB’s do bobble their head and point when ever a defensive player jumps offside

Technically speaking the targeting call could be not targeting depending on the ref and the non offsides call was total crap nobody can argue that
@@konnorbouman8320 maybe its different in college, but at least per nfl rules it isn't a penalty unless contact is made with an o lineman, a defender is in the neutral zone when the ball is snapped, or a defender jumping causes an o lineman to jump in response. None of those things happened so idk what iowa st was so upset about.
