Depends what is meant by a "credible alternative". In pure performance terms, a TX200 or ProSport certainly is, but the key word is "alternative". They are so close in performance, it depends on who is shooting which gun, rather than which is better. If fit, finish and pride of ownership is key, I'd say AA edges it, but only just. If you are on a budget, both are likely to be out of reach, but there are alternatives from BSA, Gamo, Cometa and others that can be made to perform very well with tuning/fettling. They may not they match AA or Weihrauch for quality of construction, materials, etc, but they can do a good job. As you say, the Walthers were on a similar level, but they are no longer made, so used is the only option (a shame - I'm very fond of my LGV and always fancied a LGU but never got one whilst they were available). It's down to personal preference in the end. I had a walnut ProSport, which was a beautiful gun and extremely accurate. I sold it because I found a thumbhole stock HW97 a better fit for my hand and eye, but that's just me. For me, there was no discernible difference in performance between them. I like my HW95s and 99 a lot, too. They're better field guns for me, because they are light, easy to carry and less fiddly to cock and load.
The only viable alternative to, say a HW97K is a used TX200 or Prosport. I have both the TX200 and the HW97K and love them both. I don't need any other rifles at this point, but I have another half dozen getting to the point where I am. I've got a nice tune on my TX200 but don't have the stones to open up the HW97K. Tools I have, but my hands work as if I had mittens on them. I can watch your yutube videos until the cows come home, but my hand to eye coordination neve gets any better. Off to the professional tuner I suppose. Oh, I must let you know, I'm out in California, you know, way across the pond. Any wisdom for an excellent tuner for me, or should I muddle through it myself? Orv.
I ordered a comets USC .22 exited to get a new rifle, had a try and came home with another HW 80. Chopped the barrel of to 10” dressed the crown and fitted an old Webley moderator. Wow what a rifle
Hi Nick, I have a few of these cometa fenix rifles. They are a very good bit of kit for the money and are surprisingly accurate. I have stripped the rifles as I do with all my rifles it doesn't matter how expensive they are. I just can't help myself I just have to see how they tick. My first thought was that the stroke is way to much for a 12ftlb rifle, it definitely wants a short stroke piston extension and a replacement piston seal although mine were fine I have seen a few with damaged edges but seal OK. The rear spring guild needs changing for a longer better fitting one. It takes a bit of heat to release it from the back block, but it does come out. The front muzzle break is more than likely glued on to. The silencer on the usc has a grub screw and is also glued on and again needs heat to remove. The piston is pretty light too, The trigger can be worked on to, With a strip and sear Polish and adjusted properly they are well above average. So look forward to a short stroke kit and nice set of guilds to replace what it comes with and you will transform how this rifle shoots. This is definitely an alternative to the cheaper hw rifles, and will do anything the hw rifles will do out in the hunting field. I have most of the hw rifles and would take the cometa out in the field just as I would the hw rifles both bring home the meat.
Brilliant maybe best vid yet😂..as far as break barrels go there is no alternative, the cometa by all accounts is not a terrible rifle and a good rifle in many respects..but that's hardly a glowing endorsement..and a 2nd hand weihrauch is cheaper and better..air arms aren't interested in break barrels only distributing Indian 1's...I promise if I win the Euro millions I'll start a proper British air gun company wave my hand at Fritz and say oi OI we're back in the game it will be 1966 all over again 😂👍👍

@keithbarker-e4q further down the comments someone's saying a possibility that air arms may revealing their own break barrel next yr that would be fantastic..and probably more likely than me winning to lotto 😄👍
@keithbarker-e4q it was the webley mk2, I went to order one but they never materialised, they were just to expensive to build and make a profit on, that's what I was told.
@@roberttaylor6075 Those Webleys had that feel about them. Something special. Never owned one, just wanted one. Nearest I had was aWebley Senior, thought it looked like a a short barreled baby Mk 3... All the best Keith
Also the single most important thing on an air-rifle in terms of accuracy is it’s trigger. Aside from the Rekord and CD the other brands are wanting for the majority of guns. If BSA had an active, Rekord-type on its SuperStar then it would be twice the rifle. If Feinwerkbau had its game on in the early 80s it would have made a long-stroke or large piston diameter FT version of its 300. That has a fantastic trigger, much better than HW, and it would have wiped the floor with everything including the early PCPs.
There is no alternative. There is no better trigger. Build quality. Accuracy. Reliability. Excepting the TX and Prosport. You just have to pay the price. Admittedly there are very many lower priced that are NEARLY as good and will be excellent in their price bracket and usage but the feel good factor of owning a nice bit of kit that gives so much positive feedback is hard to beat. The HW 30 is affordable and just has to be experienced, an absolute gem up to 40 yds. For a little bit more cash, the HW 99s/50 will suit all purposes and a brilliant “one rifle only”.
Nice video mate, thank you. I had a nice Hatsan mod60 that was pretty good, the Quatro trigger was nice. But I also have aHW97 and a AA Pro Sport and the Hatsan was just not the same quality. I also had a Cometa USC Premier Star which was nice, but again, not quite the same quality as a AA or HW. If you ever do find a proper Weihrauch killer, then let us know.... cheers
The Diana 34 EMS with T06 trigger was a pleasant surprise for me. Out of the box it was smoother than most of my HW's . I have a Cometa 220 compact with fixed surpressor. It is not the same as a HW30 or 50. Obviously the trigger is not even close. But if you take it apart you can see its just not the same level of finish. The barrel seems to be the best part of the gun. With practice and trigger tweaking you can get good groups. I would like to know how the Cometa trigger on your gun compares to a Diana T06.
Hi Nick, I have been loyal to my country of residence 😎, and have 5 cometas, very simple to work on, accurate, stylish and with many models to choose from, whilst the good ones are not cheap...€400ish there fairly well made and I'm pleased to have them. My own personal opinion is that there competition over here Norica, is a better build, equally easy to work on, again very accurate and around the same price point. They use German springs, which doesn't sound that exiting, but with the 2 I have, the Storm and the Marvic there was zero twang out the box, the cometas needed some work, oh and keeping loyal, did I mention the 14 Gamos...😂😂😂😂😂 looking forward to seeing you strip that fusion..(other than the barrel, internally identical to the 400 fenix.
That made me me smile😊 but thanks for your recent 56th Diana videos it’s helped me fitting one of your springs I bought from you a while back,…I wouldn’t mind a hw77 is something I’d like but an alternative umm ,Merry Xmas
Glad to see you've received the Cometa Nick. The only reason i bought it, was to see if a cheaper rifle could compete with weihrauch. I knew bsa couldn't and i was pretty disappointed with this Cometa too. Looking forward to seeing if you can get it shooting better, i was simply lacking the enthusiasm with it 👍
I bought a cometa for £20 off a m8 ,it was in a poor state, I couldn't get the plug out to look at the guts and the safety is jammed on it was in a damp shed for years ,even the wood on the end of the butt by the rubber pad was soft ,I rubbed down stock and stained it ,rubbed off as much rust as I could see and cold blued it ,stuck a scope on it ,and I was shocked how accurate it was at 30m and how smooth it was ,it even feels smoother than my new hw97k, just a shame it looks a bit of a scab lol
Thanks for bringing back the airgun magazine memory’s 😂😂👍 I done exactly the same. Let’s not mention club books 😂 A good guide to buying a airgun is the spares availability 😊👍 Airguns are like hand tools, if you only need to use them now and again buy cheap ish. But If you’re a tradesman and use them regularly and need reliability but quality. The dilema is do I buy a new or second hand weihrauch because the older weihrauchs are made different ie the screw off end block so is a new weihrauch better quality wise than an old one I have an hw85mk1 which I believe is the same as a new hw95 but mine seems to be of more quality than a new 95.Alan
HW77/97 accuracy wise same thing as the TX 200 Air Arms guns. TX has it for serviceability. Parts availability same. Metal finish goes to TX guns. Wood finish goes to HW guns. Trigger goes to HW guns. Take your pick as they are both great. And, yes from personally owning the lot of them, HW 77/97 in both .177 and .22/ TX 200 std and HC in .177 and .22.
Some good guns power wise, but the only other to consider is a Diana, TO6 triggers are awesome when you get used to adjusting the trigger, which is quite easy, Cometa has a rubbish trigger Walther had a rubbish trigger It's all about the triggers in terms of what sets the above two apart from the rest. End of story. ❤
I have worked on a good few cometa triggers and I can get them really good. It takes a bit of work but I can get them safely down below a 1lb pull with no creep I have bumped tested them over and over without ever having the trigger fail. They are very accurate to and I take mine into the hunting field and it will do the job at any safe hunting ranges.
I bought a Cometa 400 USC .25 mostly for the novelty factor. It is a hoot, like shooting an elephant gun with the same accuracy. It's pretty well put together but its not quite Weihrauch.
Just got back into shooting bought two Pcp's , super accurate but you're right they're boring! Started shooting my 77 again, Tbt'd it, love it ,bought a 97, ordered another 80 ( had one year's ago) and pick up a project 90 that's had a hard life, got the spring bug again 😂 considered Air Arms? To dear! Everything else seems cheaply made so Weihrauch's the way im going me thinks 😊
Very few alternatives to Weihrauch in that price point but there is the Cometa as you said plus Hatsan and Kral. There is also Gamo and BSA but they are rough as a dogs arse. My Dad (89) had a Gamo whisper something or other that at 11.5 flb could not hit a barn door so I got a chap off the AGF (Shauny) to fettle it down to 9flb with a set of guides and a polish. Although it was now accurate and the magazine system worked very well I would not wish one on my worst enemy.
Just put a Welsh Willy kit in my Cometa 400 Fenix. It's now smooth as silk, quick sharp firing cycle at 11.2 FtIbs (177) I do like the trigger, just a bit of creep second stage but light, quite happy with it. I've mounted a Wulf 2-7x32 scope on it and if weather permits I'll try it out on Sunday 22nd, see which pellets work best. TBT don't make a kit for this rifle, BTW ??? I have a HW98 with TBT fitted and the cycle is better with the Cometa. Both rifles are as rough as hell inside and have de-burred both. Of all the things I hate most compared is the Cometa pozidrive stock screws, won't last. Cometa is much pretier and lighter. Cometa open sights are good. Both will last decades. You mentioned Simmons, I have a 25+ yrs old 6-18 Simmons on my 98, works great.
From what I have read Walther stopped making the LGV and LGU due to the clamshell mould for the trigger pack wearing out and not enough sales to justify a new mould .
I’m a Weihrauch fan but Air Arms are not only a credible alternative to Weihrauch but could be said to be better?’? Let me think, a Cometa review in Airgun World or Airgunner would say something like:- What a fantastic gun Great value for money Superb handling Great quality Deep bluing Pellet on pellet at 50 yards 2 fps shot deviation Beautiful woodwork Absolutely no issues with it whatsoever The best thing since sliced bread Blah blah blah.. I used to buy those comics back in the day when I was a lot younger 😉 The Cometa USC’s look very nice BTW and am interested to see how that gun shapes up?
My two guns are 97 blue laminate 177 (jsb 10.34grn) Diana 56TH (jsb 10.34grn) Both great guns, however the 56 has the edge on accuracy and is far away a better long range rabbittter, zero perceived recoil and is 100fps faster than the 97 using the JSB's so it's flatter shooting. The only recoiler I'd play with would be the 80 in 22 in the future.
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 no this is a completely different to the precihole stuff it will be a uk made theyre just trying to get it built at a price point that is under the tx200 a few hundred quid. Im in the trade and spoke to the reps about it yesterday.
Confidence in and love of your kit wether it be guns , fishing rods , or whatever hobby / sport has chosen you ! we all know the " magic , the alchemy " that comes with personal experience , for me , first big boy gun was a HW 80 , then 77 the list goes on , open the cabinet door and gaze upon them , sad but true 😊 stay safe everyone.
Diana rifles are not fully up to the HW quality but the 34, 350 Mag, 460, 48,and 52 are reasonable alternatives and better than Cometa. I had a Cometa but sent it back after I saw the build quality and all the machining marks and finish blems, etc.
If I were buying new, then I would be looking at the Weihrauch's or Air Arms. The only other one I would want is the Diana 54, I haven't had my hands on one of those yet. To me these are your choices if you want a new quality spring piston rifle. Of course there are plenty of used rifles out there.
I think it would be really Fun if there was a competition available say at max 30 yards target no pcp allowed only springers/gas ram, where only one gun per manufacture and model/type/number was allowed to be entered, any age gun allowed, no bench rests, split between scopes and open sites? So would be available to enter the more obscure forgotten air rifle. Infact the more obscure may give you an advantage? This could really show off some more historic air rifles abilities or not? Then you would not end up with everyone turning up with Weihrauch or Air arms on the day. Could be a really fun day out? people who love their guns rather than buy what the internet reviews tell them to? think you would have to raffle the entries for Weihrauch shooters.
Regarding the merits of cometas i only have experience of one i got recently very cheap from a pal its a COMETA 300 carbine in .177 with a camo stock great lttle hunting gun very accurate and smooth shooting but the blueing is pretty poor and the breech block has sharp corners and edges if they could only give them a stone wash before blueing it would be so much better also the lettering on the gun looks cheap and naff and i dont like the square trigger gaurd but apart from that it preforms great . I did have a look in the guts to see if it had been fitted with a drop in kit but it all looked original with a metal top hat and a metal spring guide with a rotating bottom washer arrangment with a sort of half mooned shap which curls at the top to encase the end of the spring . Seems to work well no twang and just a slight thud when fired hardley any recoil . Oh and it also has a metal manual resettable saftey catch on the end of the cylinder which i like
I didn’t follow the crowd when early FT started and I bought a Hammerli 401. It was extremely accurate and has a lovely trigger. However it only had 7.5 fpe. You’ll find any other rifle will have a flaw compared to an HW or an AA. Even the rifle that matched the 97/77 TX200 - the Walther LGU - failed as its engineering (not its performance) didn’t match HW.
I have a Walther century in .177 which has a barrel lock like the old hw35 shot great out of the box one of the few airguns i have never touched bit heavy though at over 8lb Impressed by the century i also went and bought the cheaper Walther Terrus also in .177 which is a lot lighter great gun for wandering around various crofts after rabbits here in Shetland were i live .The local crofters are usually delighted if you ask for permission to thin out the rabbit populations which plague their land and give you a free hand . A friend of mine recently shot over 100 in one outing though he was using a Ruger 10/22 in 22lr with a moderator . I prefer my air rifle though more of a challange .
Such a shame the way BSA and Webley have gone, they at least to me used to be something a bit special as I had a Excel has my first proper air gun and later a MK2 Eclipse carbine and on to a BSA Gold Star under level all of them in .22 then PCP’s seemed to take over as the guns to get, boy do I miss the olden days 😂👍
The cometa rifles are OK well worth having but not an alternative certainly not for competition use there just not as accurate and the triggers are limited there are aftermarketstigger blades from spain . Diana I feal are the only alternative to HW regarding new stuff
Pretty pictures online and specs mean nothing, so many cheap guns look amazing like this but when you pick up and hold a Weihrauch, that's when you know where the money has gone.
For me the Cometas are the best of spanish guns, the closest any spanish gun makes to HW. After a bit of love an care they shine, they have cold hammer forged barrels tend to prefer soft pellets like the JSB. The trigger group is realy simple but adjustable, after polished and correctly adjusted makes a clean, short and very light pull. For sub 12ft-lb limit they have very soft shooting cicle, almost recoiless, only need a good spring / guide kit to tame down the power and nothing more.
Maybe wrong Nick, but " British Made " ? That Prosport had a barrel made in Germany and a stock from Italy. ? Maybe wrong, but thats what I was told at the time. Looking forward to seeing how my top class secret underlever from Spain does agains t a Holy gun, sorry Weihrauch.....Wooden spoon job... keith
TX, Pro Sport. Nice looking rifles, but come on! Any one that has experience knows. Accurate shooting are the same. Although my HW rifles are all tuned.Made no difference to accuracy, just no bong
Of course there is an alternative, it's just that people follow fashions, and the current springer fashions dictate AA or Weihrauch. This is recent and we have all followed the superguns throughout the years, you mention a couple, but people convince themselves by reading reviews. Now think of this people, when did it go from say BSA to Weihrauch, then Weihrauch to AA, someone at some point had to try an alternative. I own 6 Weihrauch, one AA, two BSA, one Webley (Birmingham) and two Cometa. Before I say this I apologise to you disciples, ALL OF THEM shoot great, there is very little difference but you'll be shocked, the most accurate gun I own is the Cometa Fusion. It is not nearly as well made as some of the others, it has plastic bits, but I'm sorry to say it outshoots the others. Now I may be lucky, I doubt it but I may be, but I was willing to buck the trend and benefitted from it. Do not believe anything anyone tells you, just look at our present government for proof, there are many good guns out there overlooked, try them.
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 I hope you get a good one and you won't be disappointed. The best bit (which most don't realise) is the lifetime guarantee. Get a bad one, send it back until you're happy, if only all manufacturers were the same?
@ I suppose it’s personal preference at the end of the day, but, I’ve owned both, put them both through their paces and the TX out performs the HW77 and 80 all day long. My test is consistently hitting 1” spinner at 69 yards and the TX does.

I bought a Cometa 400 USC .25 mostly for the novelty factor. It is a hoot, like shooting an elephant gun with the same accuracy. It's pretty well put together but its not quite Weihrauch.
Looking forward to your review on the Cometa. I've heard good things about the except for the trigger.
It’s a tragedy the way good quality spring guns have died out.
Just put a Welsh Willy kit in my Cometa 400 Fenix. It's now smooth as silk, quick sharp firing cycle at 11.2 FtIbs (177)
I do like the trigger, just a bit of creep second stage but light, quite happy with it.
Now I have a Cometa I can make a kit for it👍
From what I have read Walther stopped making the LGV and LGU due to the clamshell mould for the trigger pack wearing out and not enough sales to justify a new mould .
You are correct, the TX and pro sport are the only viable options... very sad. Have a good Christmas 🎄
I like the wood work on that rifle !!
I’m a Weihrauch fan but Air Arms are not only a credible alternative to Weihrauch but could be said to be better?’?
Let me think, a Cometa review in Airgun World or Airgunner would say something like:-
What a fantastic gun
Great value for money
Superb handling
Great quality
Deep bluing
Pellet on pellet at 50 yards
2 fps shot deviation
Beautiful woodwork
Absolutely no issues with it whatsoever
The best thing since sliced bread
Blah blah blah..
I used to buy those comics back in the day when I was a lot younger 😉
The Cometa USC’s look very nice BTW and am interested to see how that gun shapes up?
I think Terry Doe wrote stuff for that mag. A friend of mine told me he said it was for Sun readers LOL.
LOL
How much was the fenman in that old mag Nick? Great video.
My two guns are 97 blue laminate 177 (jsb 10.34grn)
Diana 56TH (jsb 10.34grn)
Both great guns, however the 56 has the edge on accuracy and is far away a better long range rabbittter, zero perceived recoil and is 100fps faster than the 97 using the JSB's so it's flatter shooting.
The only recoiler I'd play with would be the 80 in 22 in the future.
Possible Airarms break barrel in the works might be a prototype at the BSS 25
It’s an Indian air rifle imported by Air Arms, called the precihole! I’m still not sure how I feel about that
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 no this is a completely different to the precihole stuff it will be a uk made theyre just trying to get it built at a price point that is under the tx200 a few hundred quid. Im in the trade and spoke to the reps about it yesterday.
@@Lethal_Intent that would be good, the last one was a lovely, but very expensive failure
@Lethal_Intent brilliant news I was thinking a hw95 was my only real option very much looking forward to see what's going to be on offer 👍
💯 right had two new ones rubbish
Two airgun tuners I know, one in England (Tony Wall) one here in NZ, both say that Diana are better finished internally,
If I were buying new, then I would be looking at the Weihrauch's or Air Arms. The only other one I would want is the Diana 54, I haven't had my hands on one of those yet. To me these are your choices if you want a new quality spring piston rifle. Of course there are plenty of used rifles out there.
Wish I had kept all of my old air gun magazines. Bugger.
Oh and it also has a metal manual resettable saftey catch on the end of the cylinder which i like
Cosa ne pensate della HW 977 full 19j con canna da 37 cm , e dei H&N Baracuda Match 10.65 ??!
Está bien, pero un pellet de menos de 9 granos funcionará mejor👍
I didn’t follow the crowd when early FT started and I bought a Hammerli 401. It was extremely accurate and has a lovely trigger. However it only had 7.5 fpe. You’ll find any other rifle will have a flaw compared to an HW or an AA. Even the rifle that matched the 97/77 TX200 - the Walther LGU - failed as its engineering (not its performance) didn’t match HW.
Ramblings of a mad man, I think he has been taking something 😅
Air arms need to remake the pro elite for the British sub 12 ft lb market
Mad video Nick, but enjoyable!
To answer that question: Nope! 😊
I bought a bsa lightning grt and its more accurate than some say but the trigger is dreadful and unfortunately a deal breaker so incoming a hw97
The cometa rifles are OK well worth having but not an alternative certainly not for competition use there just not as accurate and the triggers are limited there are aftermarketstigger blades from spain . Diana I feal are the only alternative to HW regarding new stuff
There’snt at the moment but I don’t care. I love my Weihrauchs.
Same as....there the best...
Pretty pictures online and specs mean nothing, so many cheap guns look amazing like this but when you pick up and hold a Weihrauch, that's when you know where the money has gone.
Erm…….the Beeman R7 Elite and the Beeman R9 Elite?
Very good!😂
For me the Cometas are the best of spanish guns, the closest any spanish gun makes to HW.
Got some mags from the 80s 😊
Maybe wrong Nick, but " British Made " ? That Prosport had a barrel made in Germany and a stock from Italy. ? Maybe wrong, but thats what I was told at the time. Looking forward to seeing how my top class secret underlever from Spain does agains t a Holy gun, sorry Weihrauch.....Wooden spoon job... keith
Weihrauch stocks come for Italy too. But on the box it says made in Germany 😁
FWB 124 and 127 come to mind
Yep, they even tried to make a new 127 a few years back. It was a massive, overpriced hippocrocapig and disappeared without a trace!
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 I agree, they sure screwed up a good thing!!!
Go,Go,Go
Diana Air Rifles are the ONLY Alternative to Weihrauch. Buy a copy of GunMart.
Nice one nick xden
I have bsa’s Webley’s and others. This Fusion Premier Star looks like a 98 for 99 money. I am looking forward to testing it👍
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 I hope you get a good one and you won't be disappointed. The best bit (which most don't realise) is the lifetime guarantee. Get a bad one, send it back until you're happy, if only all manufacturers were the same?
TX200 eats any HW for breakfast 💪🏼👌🏼
And that is why you should watch the video before commenting!😂
@ needed to be first🤣🤣
@@tbtairrifletuning1520 TX is still the king of springers….
@@AdamMcCool-01 Have seen a lot of comparison videos from people who own both and claim differently.
@ I suppose it’s personal preference at the end of the day, but, I’ve owned both, put them both through their paces and the TX out performs the HW77 and 80 all day long. My test is consistently hitting 1” spinner at 69 yards and the TX does.
If you put bigger spring in it well fall apart scarp cometa hw 80 all day long👍
Nice rant
I ordered a comets USC .22 exited to get a new rifle, had a try and came home with another HW 80. Chopped the barrel of to 10” dressed the crown and fitted an old Webley moderator. Wow what a rifle
