In this week's Sound Bank 14, I did some exploring into the world of Bossa Nova and I would like to share with you all some footage and notes from this mini immersion. I include Pocket Piece No. 8 “New Bossa,” a composition I wrote inspired by this experience (not intended to be a bossa nova tune but I tried to incorporate elements of Bossa Nova into it).

Oh Nahre, it's a shame I didn't knew you would be making this video, there are some great but forgotten brazilian jazz and bossa pianists I think people forgot to recommend to you for making this video and who could be a great source of inspiration for this video and for your work. Well, anyway, to not take much of your time, I think I will recommend only two great albums which I think are indispensable: Mario Castro Neves & Samba S.A. (1967) and Walter Wanderley - Rainforest (1966). The whole work of Walter Wanderley deserves a look btw. Sadly, mostly of Mario Castro Neves's works got lost by time and I couldn't find anywhere anymore on internet besides this album, but you can have a taste of them in this one. Have a great weekend!!

As a brazilian, I always get amazed to see how people from other nationalities and other backgrounds digest Bossa Nova and Choro. Because of my parents, I grew up on these tunes, and today, when I play the guitar, it all comes very naturally to me. But I love this kind of video because it reminds me of how greatly profound is the Bossa Nova, and how broadly we, as humans, can experience music in different manners. Thank you for reminding me of that. Btw, you should listen to a guy called "João Bosco". Try listening to "Incompatibilidade de Gênios", and hear the rhythm of the acoustic guitar. And seriously, try out the style we call "Choro". Listen to some "Cartola", tunes like "As Rosas Não Falam", "Acontece" and "O mundo é um moinho". He had serious influence of classical music, I think you'll love it.
    Thank you!
    All the best,
    André.

Bossa Nova music can make you feel peaceful, but if you read the lyrics, the overwhelming feeling is "saudade" (longing). It is a feeling that there is empty space in you as long as you don't have what you long for.

A lovely piece of music in it's own right. One crucial element that you picked up on early in the video is how the whole bossa nova piece seems to shimmer with rhythmic elements. But if I may, this song tries too hard to get all those elements and misses something more fundamental. Because you are one musician playing all those eighth notes, the spaces between those notes are entirely too regular, draw too much attention, and rob the music of the 3-3-2 that you're looking for. If on the other hand, you have multiple instrumentalists with different instruments that all bend the rhythm just slightly for their own purposes, you get that floaty shimmer without losing the central beat. Bossa nova is about the ensemble!
Thanks for this! I hope I don't sound too negative?

Love this, and all your videos. I click both to learn and to relax. There's something incredible calming about watching an incredibly talented musician who's in the zone.
Your editing is great - I imagine you're pretty ruthless with the cuts, to whittle these whole processes down to just a few minutes of video - but I'd watch them if they were ten times as long.

One of my favorite features of your videos is how you show us learning rather than instructing us. And then, of course, the way you assimilate the new information and do something original with it is great. And I cannot fail to mention how beautifully you play on that little keyboard. I have to begin thinking of how to get my hands to share the same pocket of space as you do. Different melodic shapes pop out in unexpected registers. It just keeps the groove happening and sparkling like glints of sunlight on the water.

Loved your definition of bossa nova, is fun to see it from someone on the opposite side of the "spectrum" from me (I have no classical music education, but basically raised with that music) as usual, great work! It has the "soul" even if it's another body!
Uhmm, maybe that's a good suggestion for the next "digested" video? Some Soul and R&B? Take care, and a scooby snack to Bobby! :-)

It's nice that you try these different things and it still ends up sounding like you. Also, the passage at 4:42 really surprised me (I liked it a lot). it feels improvised, but I'm guessing it's not.

I wish you had listened to Marcos Valle, Joao Gilberto, Tamba Trio, Edu Lobo, Djavan, Elis Regina, Bebeto Castilho, Joao Bosco, et cetera...
Girl from Ipanema is a cliche' - not something that necessarily amounts to the most intriguing possible result. Bossa Nova is so much deeper in sound and composition, than what the Best of Hits would lead you to believe - and unfortunately a relatively small amount of people have delved a bit deeper.

Hi Nahre Sol! I recently came across your videos and instantly love them! Have you considered covering Salsa (and it's predecessors e.g. danzon, son, chachacha, guajira, mambo, boogaloo, etc...) I really think it could be so interesting!

So cool you try doing all these ! I see so many people getting clustered and "jailed" by a particular gender of music...
By the way, I recently suggested you a pianist with this open-minded, style-mixing personality, Chilly Gonzales. Aaand I can't help but wonder if you listened to his piano solos and what you thought of them :) ?

Hey Nahre, as a brazilian born and raised listening to samba, choro, bossa, and similar interwoven styles, this video interested me very much. I always had a thing with bossa because i liked the harmonies very much, but I hated the apathy of the constant clave rhythm and soft sounds, whereas samba and choro had more driven and "raw"emotions displayed, if that makes sense. Well, I loved that you imposed an second sequence of rhythms and distributed the clave so well in different octaves, that you can hear both of them in the piece and always be on the look out for new things. I liked it so much that I kept imagining what it would look like with a band arrengement, percussion and string instruments that come from this styles. Would you be cool with me making that as an exercise and putting it on youtube? or is that too far? haha Thanks for the awesome content!
