Not just PRR, either. The LIRR was owned by the Pennsy for a long time, and a lot of our freight engines had these whistles, too. Knowing that I could've lived in a time where I could've heard this spine-chilling sound every night makes me feel greatful for the arguably more melodious horns we have now, considering I live near a crossing that sees both passenger and freight service. Though, I'd definitely prefer steam power to run the lines over the diesels and electrics we have, for sure.

@@That_One_Guy_In_A_Band Yes it was a book or magazine article by the Late Great Ron Zeil that introduced me to the LI look way back in the 80s. I think Ron had more love for it than anyone he was always writing articles and books on it. Always trying to get the Project 35 and 39 moving further along with little success. I think project 39 is now probably the longest ongoing restoration thats never been completed. They started that before I was even born and it's never run. He also penned probably the best book ever made on the Spanish American War. That has lots of steam in it too but theyre ships.

The people who drive heritage steam no doubt enjoy seeing well recorded clips of their engines on the go. It can be quite difficult to really appreciate the sights and sounds of a steam engine doing what it does best while you are on the footplate. Have to let someone else take the controls and give you a photo runby.

Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern is a class 3 railroad, they don't need PTC anytime soon but might need to equip it in the future. They probably put the diesel on it for visibility, its hard for a steamer's crew to see over the tender when running backwards.
