The Marine Recon Challenge

  • Silhouetted palm trees dotted a creeping sunrise to the east, and a waning moon hung in the black sky above the Pacific Ocean at 5 a.m. Friday morning as 22 current and former Reconnaissance Marines stood on the San Onofre Beach shoreline aboard Camp Pendleton, California, waiting to start a grueling day.
“Three! Two! One!” a Marine yelled, starting the 2021 Recon Challenge.
Competing in two-man teams, the Marines took off over sand and slick rocks, rifles slung across their backs and carrying rucksacks weighing at least 50 pounds. Without hesitation, they waded into the surf, shrinking smaller and smaller until they disappeared in the waves.
The 1,000-meter ocean swim was an initial baptism to kick off the 2021 Marine Recon Challenge.
Competitors put their strength and endurance to the ultimate test during the punishing, daylong contest. Each Recon Marine wore the name of one of his fallen brothers on his pack, and the Gold Star families of the fallen were on hand to observe the commemorative event throughout the day. They cheered competitors on at several of the challenge’s 10 events and welcomed the Marines at the finish line.

True Marines always appreciate thier Army, Navy, Air Force, National Guard, and Coast Guard continuants. Because we know, that if the shit hits the fan, we are all in it together until the enemy has been desimated.

I was in 2nd Recon from '75 - '77. I don't think I would want to tangle with any of these Recon Marines as they all look much heavier/thicker than I was or most of the Recon Marines I served with were. We looked like scarecrows in comparison. I was 5'10" on a good day and probably closer to 5'9"...I usually weighed about 155. But I could swim forever and could run 3 miles in under 16 minutes (I grew up surfing in Cocoa Beach, Fl. and ran cross country and played baseball and football in H.S.) and ran The Marine Corps Marathon in '77 in 2:48:41.

These kids are just a bit bigger these days. But more importantly, they have gyms 24-7 and nutrition stores , plus online shopping for most any supplements they need.
Lastly, so much available knowledge on physical training and dietary guidelines is at their fingertips.

I was two years Marine Infantry, then two years Reconnassance Marine (Charlie Company, 2nd Recon, Camp Lejeune, NC). The journey was difficult but rewarding in many ways. I think it was the brotherhood of the whole thing. We trained like it was the real deal most of the time, very high speed. After you do that a few years the guy on your left and right are your brothers because everyone knows a five-man Recon Team and a Navy Corpsman cannot be compromised while spying on the enemy at Zero Dark Thirty, on a Green Op. One mistake by anyone on the team could lead to a violent firefight at any time. Sometimes we were very close to the enemy like as in just yards away. Henseforth, Brotherhood.

Recon should be a Force Recon Regiment. Special Reconnaissance is returning to the fore as conventional warfare looms on the horizon. Seeing the enemy and enabling low signature, distribtluted hunter killer teams ahead of line troops may be a strongpoint of the new EABO strategy. 4 Force Reconnaissance Battalions all capable of deep reconnaissance, with ANGLICO forward observer and jtac qualified tacp's. I'd also integrate radio reconnaissance platoon and ground sensor platoon into this Force Reconnaissance Battalion. I'd even integrate a LAR Company with a CAAT Team. I'd also add a USMC pathfinder course to the pipeline so that Recon Marines won't lose that knowledge if the Army closes its pathfinder school. I'd also add EOTG's urban reconnaissance course to the Recon pipeline, so that Recon Marines don't have to wait for the MEU to come around to gain those specific reconnaissance skills. Cities close to coastlines are projected to grow in the coming decades, and we all know how deadly urban warfare can be. Speaking of Urban Warfare, the new Recon Sniper Course previously covered integrates a greater amount of urban warfare than the SSBC did. Not that the Scout Sniper Basic Course is bad, but Recon is condensing the Urban and Basic Course into one, with a greater amount of weapons familiarization and mission planning than before. Well taught marksmanship skills would now be introduced to an already expanded, all domain reconnaissance skillet. Combine this with Recon's expanded SR skillset, insertion methods, and organic motorized cavalry/ anti armor vics, small boat capabilites, and the potential Small Craft Companies would make things difficult for China. All Recon Marines should be Designated Marksman Qualified. This would make every 0321, even the new additions further skilled in observation and marksmanship skills. In short, every Recon Marine would be Sniper capable, just like MEU's are Special Operations Capable. Everyone is Force Recon because the more deep reconnaissance capable Marines you have, the quicker you can sense and strike the enemy before they see you. Since concealment is of the utmost importance to a Recon team, any offensive capability they have would have to be low signature, and lightweight. Snipers would fit this role, with the ability to employ anti personnel and light anti vehicle fires with althea quitest, most powerful and lightest precision weapon a human can reasonably carry. The Force Reconnaisance Battalion's Surveillance and Target Acquisition Company would also serve as the new "deep reconnaissance company" SI'd also make RTLC mandatory, and I'd create a Reconnaissance Unit Leader's Course- similar to the Scout/ Sniper Unit Leader Course with the hope that it would reduce friction between Force Recon units and the conventional Marine Infantry they so often support. I'd request that the ARTB at Fort Benning, GA double the amount of Ranger and RSLC spots to broaden a Recon Marine's skillset, and I'd also request the Royal Marines do the same with the exchange program they share with us. I'd also have Recon Marines administer a screener at each Recon Battalion every third Thursday of the month like they used to, wartime or not. This would help to boost Recon recruiting with MARSOC stealing many potential Recon candidates. Finally, I'd equip Recon with a 14.5 in ambidextrous slim-line stock MLOK handguard addition to the new M27 Recon Weapons Kit, with the future possibility of accepting polymer cased telescoped 5.56 ammo. I'd also add in polymer neutrally buoyant swimmers cut sapi plates with a laser cut hydrophobic flak carrier, junge cammies, jungle boots, a lmg upper receiver and high capacity stick magazine for the M27 IAR, and double the MCIWS and MCIWST's per Recon Company. Finally, with the disbandment of Scout/ Sniper Platoon's, i'd argue Recon Marines should put together some sort of Reconnaissance Scout Course for the new "Scout Platoon/ Designated Marksman" Platoons the line Marine units are forming. Who else would do it? Lastly, MARSOC should allow Recon to train st the MRTC. It's time for the Corps to invest back into it's Recon Marines.
