This playset is amazing! I wish these toys were available in the USA. I know my brother and I would have loved these. This playset reminds me of how great toys were done back when we were kids. This was an amazing video to watch. Very well done! You deserve an ale mate!
I got this for Christmas 1983. It was magical and this video has brought back all the wonderful memories of that time. I knew i was getting it and had lots of the figures and vehicles already so concocted a scenario that they were on a mission to find this base in the lead up to Christmas Day. It didn’t last too long though, I actually think I grew out of figures by the summer of 1984 and my sister had trashed it by then anyway.
Jeez! that brought back memories. I loved this review Luke. Thanks so much for doing this one mate. I never had many toys when I was a kid, but one year, I had the best Christmas ever... I got this, the AF9 (which came with a soldier and equipment). I got a couple of other things, but I can't remember (it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away).
It was a great Christmas when I got this. I played with it a lot. It was actually quite sturdy when assembled. One part that I did like is that in the prison cell, the end of the bunk could be folded back to form a kind of 'escape hatch'
This was a real treat of an upload. Thank you so much. Easily one of my favourite toys from back in t' day. I also had the Action Force Assault Course, but unfortunately I can't find a video of that. If anybody ever happens to see this comment and knows of one..PLEASE reply to me. I'll send you mucho internet love. :)
This playset is brilliant! Loaded with detail and neat spaces, and very cleverly engineered. Cardboard or not, I'd've had a blast with this, when I was a kid. Thanks for posting.
Tip: when you have to slide a tab through a tight slot, cut a section of aluminum soda can to be exactly equal to the width of the tab and fold it in half so that each side over laps the tab by no more than a quarter each. It can then be inserted without tearing the tab and removed once it is inserted.
My local toy shop in Columbus Ohio of all places just got one of these in and from where I have no clue...I've never seen one locally here ever....and we've got some great shows and shops throughout the state. I'm considering picking it up thought it will likely mean no University for my daughter!!! Haha it's pricey!
I'm probably never getting one of these. I do wish palitoy went even thin plastic for the playset. This thing is really neat. Come on companies, bring back the playsets!
This thing is awesome! Hope I can add it to my collection one day. Maybe I'll take this vid as a refferance to make a diy cobra version. There's bound to be more cardboard in the world ;)
now this is cool i still have my one, it only came with two guns but i never remember it having a seat? this was my death star back in the day. lots of happy memories.
Can anyone help with this? It seems the right place to ask... I had a playset in the seventies, it was a lot like The Guns of Naverone playset as the front was a large rock, the back was a multistorey headquarters, with a lift a drawbridge style door. It came with small, square blocky figures...I can remember them being yellow. Anyone know what this was?
actionjackman IT IS! IT IS! I get obsessed with this occasionally as I pretty much have total recall about things in my childhood. Thank you, so nice to know it actually existed.
actionjackman So funny how memory works; all I could remember was the absolute basics and forgot it had a huge lift/crane, helicopter and zip lines. And it was huge.
7 years late to the party but, boy did I love watching this! I had it back in the 80s. Why can’t I go back? WHY WON’T THEY LET ME GO BACK?!😩 Also, this may sound odd but I really like the typeface they used for the instructions!
Gold! Great review. Been circling this beast on eBay for a while - never pounced though. I can understand why they went for this design on the Death Star - much cheaper. Frankly, it leaves more room for the imagination too. I think they issued the US 'PITT' under the Action Force banner too, so many people would be more familiar with that base.
actionjackman That was it - the one with the ramp. I won't be buying this one... but that's because I've had to move through my 'buying big playsets' phase into smaller items - space issues. Still looks good though!
Though not active/action-oriented, its still HIGHLY detailed; actually, with a different re-printing, this could serve as a perfect COBRA/RED SHADOW HQ base too (with a terror drome on top!) Thanks again for the look-see!
I remember saving and buying this as a kid. Great disappointment to find out there where no figures or vehicles like in the advertice... Nevertheless it was a great toy. Edit: you forgot to mention the escape hatch under the bed of the jail cell.
I dont understand why toy companies dont make playsets like this now ? Its cardboard . I'd rather have a cardboard set like this anyday over a cheep looking plastic set they do nowadays. All the plastic they use now looks like play school toys . The toy companies would make a ton of money . They make things for adult collectors but they fail to make things like this . It's a retro goldmine . Toy companies are saying they can no longer make big vehicles and sets due to pricing of plastic so why not make sets like this or just reissue the palitoy death star ? It would be a field day if they did . They could easily charge a hundred dollars for it and they'd still sell out . Great video ! Wish we had this set in the United states . Looks awesome !
You know, I wouldn't be apposed to the idea of Hasbro bringing back these kind of "old school" card stock playsets. If something like this was available right now as part of a new G.I. Joe line, I think that I would be really happy. A new Terror Drome built similar to this could be a good option for Hasbro, economically too.
JoeNerd11 Maybe they think kids are too sophisticated for this kind of thing, or maybe they think parents won't see the value in a cardboard set. Either way they are missing a trick. Maybe even as a mail-away this kind of thing would work. Interesting
It goes! Family is happy and healthy so all else is secondary. I just found some Combiner Wars deluxes yesterday, enjoying those very much. All well with you I hope?
Thanks for bringing back memories of Christmas 1982 when I got this.
This is jealousy right here...Jealousy. Thanks for showing this piece.
***** These are really cheap to get hold of if your looking for one, flat pack for easy shipping too.

CountStankus Why thank you sir! I don't drink ale so I'll have a Stella instead. Cheers.
Me too, these toys would've been awesome
The best Christmas present I ever got in 1982.

MONKEYZENTV No problem buddy, my pleasure! Got some more cool AF coming up in the new year. All the best mate.
Some toy companies still sort of make playsets that are assembled this way, but with wood with printed detailing on it.

This is cool, wonder if RetroBlasting has one of these?
I had one of these, but a little after 1981. I remember some colours being different (I think). Did they make more than one version?
5:20 Looks like a TIE Fighter wing.
HRVDNT It does!
this looks like a great piece to keep on display if you have the room,it would look great filled with figures and vehicles.
Mark Demeo I wish I had room! haha, that's the way it goes. Cheers Mark

Shame this guy stopped doing videos :(
If they still made this, I wonder if it could've been made into an Action Force/GI JOE airbase for Skystrikers, Conquests and whatnot!

15:31 [right side] the "windows" or something like that, looks like a part of a TieFighter ..hehe
NANO-Nils I see it!
Brilliant video, one of my favourite toys as a kid
I need a follow-up video where you stage it with figures and vehicles and PLAY with this bad boy! Please!
I had this. Action Force ruled!
Wow what a brilliant fully realised headquarters. So much play value in there. We need more cardboard playsets
I'm probably never getting one of these. I do wish palitoy went even thin plastic for the playset. This thing is really neat. Come on companies, bring back the playsets!
That play set in the dogs bollocks, thanks for sharing!

MrJohnjohn35 No, that seat is a total mystery. Hopefully someone can illuminate us. Cheers John
actionjackman when i'm in the loft next time i'll have a look on my box to see if it show's one!
my favorite toy - i still own it and its great fun to look at even after all these years - great video :)
Sentinel3001 Thanks mate
Is there a site that has the images downloaded that could be printed off and stuck to foam board?
I would love to get a blueprint for this and make it from plywood or something 😁
Beautiful! Some nicely detailed figures also.
ToyzNWheelz Cheers mate

That's cool. Blocky yellow figures gave it away. Cheers buddy

BistoYeti Hey mate, how's it going?
actionjackman all is good in the hood.
Such a well thought out design.
I'm not from UK but those were the better version of Action Force, American GIJOE is great but the British Action Force originals were awesome.
palitoy made some good stuff. had i been able to i would have snagged a roboskull within nano-seconds as a kid.
Gold! Great review. Been circling this beast on eBay for a while - never pounced though. I can understand why they went for this design on the Death Star - much cheaper. TheNightBadger Was that the Command Centre? The redeco of the GI Joe base? So after seeing it close up will you be purchasing?
actionjackman That was it - the one with the ramp. I won't be buying this one... but that's because I've had to move through my 'buying big playsets' phase into smaller items - space issues. Still looks good though!

That's what I say; just take the bulk of a terror drome, lay it on top and the rest of the base is a 'subterranean' COBRA HQ! COBRAAA!
this playset reminds me of black mesa for some reason
Yeah, I can see where your coming from.
Ah the old toy designs of the early 80's, well at least the base is easily mobile. :D
David315842 Can't beat a cardboard classic mate. Cheers
actionjackman You're welcome. :)
What a thing of beauty!
***** Thanks man, how's it going?
