Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: There's Room For Democratic Socialists In The Democratic Party (HBO)

- First-time candidate and 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated one of the most powerful Democrats in the country Tuesday night in a Queens/Bronx congressional primary that was supposed to be a sure thing for the incumbent Joe Crowley.
She won handily, 57 percent to 42 percent, despite being outspent 10-1 and almost immediately went from an obscure primary challenger to one of the most recognizable faces in American politics.
Her victory represents the growth of the left wing of the Democratic Party in the Trump era, a wing that wants to pass Medicare-for-all, abolish ICE, and have the federal government guarantee people a job.
But while Ocasio-Cortez is to the left of almost every Democrat in Congress, she dismisses the idea that there is a coming intra-party civil war.
“I think we have to kind of get past this like a battling,” Ocasio-Cortez told VICE News Tonight's Michael Moynihan on Wednesday after her victory the previous night. “We're going to have absolutely be a lot of spirited debates in the Democratic Party. But the goal is the same. The goal is social-economic-racial justice for working class Americans.”
Ocasio-Cortez identifies both as a Democratic Socialist and a Democrat and says that the two aren’t mutually exclusive. “Democratic Party is a big tent kind of party,” she said.
The Democratic Party’s leadership in Washington, however, will certainly have to expand their own tent in order to accomodate Ocasio-Cortez. Asked about the rise of democratic socialism among young progressive in February of 2017, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said dismissively, “I have to say, we're capitalists, that's just the way it is.” And on Wednesday, Pelosi dismissed Ocasio-Cortez’s victory as “a choice in one district” and told reporters not to get “carried away.”
And it’s true that many other progressive challengers across the country have lost and that the politics in New York’s 14th district are decidedly more to the left than most districts in the country. Still, Ocasio-Cortez believes that she is a small part of a growing movement on the left full of people dissatisfied with the Democratic Party’s leadership.
“I think what's going on is that working class Americans are looking for a fierce and unapologetic champion” she said. “It could be more than one, I hope it’s more than one. But what people are asking for is a little bit of moral clarity in I think this time of chaos.”

"Economic Justice"? Who are the arbiters of what is "Just"? Is it "Just" that a person who works their entire life, are now deemed to be "privileged" and therefore not entitled to reap the benefits of their labor? Is it "Just" to deny them new opportunities simply because you believe someone less deserving should get a break? Is it "Just" to demand a living wage to an unskilled uneducated worker at a McDonald's Drive Thru. Economic justice is liberal-ese for redistribution of wealth which is another tenet of Communism and there's nothing "Just" about it.
Racial Justice to liberals mean reparations for minorities even if there is no evidence of racial discrimination. Simply being a minority is somehow proof you have been oppressed.
These are the fundamental arguments in favor of Communism dating back to Karl Marx. Today's leftist have embraced this failed ideology and call it "Progressive"

The problem with centralized planning like the type found in the Soviet Union is that the state needs to be incredibly centralized and powerful in order to distribute resources. However, with all this increased power the state and it's elite bureaucracy instead use this power to benefit themselves and end up being just as bad if not much worse than any capitalist can be. The alternative is decentralized planning which is an economic system based on maximum decentralization that can be supportive of a range of models for social ownership, including publicly owned enterprises and worker-owned cooperatives.
Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives. Democratic socialists favor as much decentralization as possible. While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives. Democratic socialists have long rejected the belief that the whole economy should be centrally planned. While we believe that democratic planning can shape major social investments like mass transit, housing, and energy, market mechanisms are needed to determine the demand for many consumer goods.

They get told what to do and do it day in day out.
They take *no risks* and get paid a guaranteed salary. If the business goes poorly the entrepreneur still has to pay you a salary even if it means that he's going to take home nothing.
For their ideas, commitment and risk-taking entrepreneurs get their just rewards.
All you have to do is learn while doing your job and you'll be able to become an entrepreneur as well. Or a high-skilled employee that can demand higher salaries equal to the value that they produce without staking any of their own money.

Ocasio-Cortez is not calling for "abolishing immigration control". She is calling for a return to the kind of immigration control which we had before 2003 when ICE was established. Also, FDR providing 15 million federal jobs during the Great Depression did not lead to the moral destruction of America; in fact, the WPA built most of America's public infrastructure and it made Americans proud of their country. When FDR asked America's youth to fight and die in WWII, many were willing to do it, partly because they knew that their country had taken care of them and given them so much. The neoliberal economic theory and individual greed that has governed the US since the election of Ronald Reagan has destroyed the kind of national spirit that led to victory in WWII.

as a latino approaching 50 who has been an activist all my adult life, I guess I felt embittered after decades were little seemed to change. Never thought would see things like this in my life. When I was younger I sold into that whole we better act more centrists because we need unity and hell the people were not going to see that being a democratic socialist as anything but radical now. So we sold our morals out an allowed the DNC to become what it is now. A party of people unable to change, who are unable to even ask for things they know are needed because their minds are polluted with this compromise on everything meme.
But I am gladdened by the fact that all the things we believed in and fought for that were considered impossible, are now embraced by the younger generation. They are no longer going to compromise. I was in SDS in college and we had a few communist in the chapter. They were alright and not near as radical as she is. This is not the time or the place for socialism. It will only be a small part of the Democratic vote. Most of them are moderate in middle America. Trump will win 2020 with a larger margin than 16. Write it down.

name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the
benefit of anyone else.
To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that
socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the
effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away,
no one will try or want to succeed.
All that writing for a point that no one will address intellectually. Its a shame too. I'd like to see a coherent arguement against this very basic logic.

Well, social democrats are not advocating for complete equality of outcome. There will still be differences in the amount of money people have. Social democrats just want the necessities taken care of. So people don't starve, become homeless, die because they can't afford health care, etc.
Also, if the only reason someone works at a job is because of the money they make, that job might not necessarily be meaningful in the first place. I live in a social democracy. I live off of free government money. But I still work pretty hard on my music. I just haven't made any money off of it (yet). Having the necessities taken care of, and living comfortably, hasn't taken away my ambition to achieve things. If I lived in a strictly capitalist society, I wouldn't have been able to do that which I love to do. I would've had to have taken a job that I hate, just so that I can survive.
Profit is not always good for society, either. For example, selling cigarettes for a living might generate a lot of money, but it's not very good for society.
And when a CEO makes 1000 times more than his employees, that's obviously not good, either. So there needs to be more equality.
When people are poor, their IQ also goes down, and they go into survival mode, and they're not gonna care so much about 'bigger picture' type things, like for instance climate change. "I'm starving. I have to figure out how to get my next meal. The penguins can wait."
David Feldman suggested that we can create free restaurants, where people can come in and eat free food. Bland (because he doesn't want to take the other restaurants out of business), nutritious, vegan food. That might be a great idea, I think. Though maybe we won't necessarily need it, if we can provide a sufficient social safety net so people can live comfortably and be able to afford the basic necessities like food and housing.
