  • What better way to treat hay fever than to jam two red LEDs up your nose. I'll let you guys decide if you think this works.
I've included a DIY version too that can also double up as a USB power-bank powered Halloween effect.
Note that I do not condone sticking LEDs up your orifices.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-

Big Clive I love you. Not literally, just in the comedic sense. Incredible how you show the average layman that the mysteries of electronics and engineering are not beyond comprehension. First you broke apart the machine and very clearly schematically described it’s detail and function. Next you reversed engineered your own set of red light probes. Seemed easy but I realize it took a lot of know-how. What I am impressed by is that your kind enough to teach this know to the average Joe, myself. I’m a community pharmacist who grew up believing all technical tasks were beyond comprehension but I’m learning as I age that with a little bit of motivation we humans can do some amazing things. Many many thanks for your humourous education today.

After looking into this the theory behind this device is sound. Low level light therapy is used throughout the medical industry to stimulate or inhibit certain cell functions. In this case the red light is absorbed by the parts of a cell which is responsible for producing histamines, reducing the amount produced and reducing symptoms. It is also used to stimulate tissue growth for faster wound healing and reducing scaring. The effectiveness of devices like this are debatable though the principal is widely accepted.
Ultra Violet isn't used because rather than stimulate cell structures it can damage or kill them. It is however used to great effect for localised bacterial and viral treatments. I would hazard a guess that these sort of treatments will become more common place in the future with antibiotic resistance becoming more of a problem.

A similar device is used at Vancouver General Hospital during surgery prep, however it is a larger machine they push around on a cart. They first apply a disinfectant liquid inside you nostrils and then place the disposable probes into your nose and make you wear special protective sunglasses as the light is extremely bright. They found doing this has dramatically reduced the chance of getting an infection post-surgery, as well as reducing the number of people who get sick during their hospital stay, it seems to work really well. So these do have a medical use, but I doubt this cheap device will do much.

I get the point you're trying to make, and yes the device Clive shows us is pure quackery (especially for hayfever... that won't do shit for allergies), I was merely pointing out the technology is useful when a real medical grade machine is used for sterilization. It's a quick procedure that costs next to nothing, and saves them money in the long run.

Christian Jacquet The question is if the microchip is programmed with one resistor or two in mind.
Or they just found cheap 120 ohm resistors, and didn’t have to use two 240 ohms.

    • @hughbrackett343
      @hughbrackett343 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I like Clive's theory better. It looks like a fix for a problem found after they started production. Hand soldering across the resistors is way more expensive that the resistor chip (c.f. earlier explanations of why 0 ohm resistors are used), even if you have barefoot peasants doing it. Possibly the micro gets squirrelly when the voltage rail drops too low and it ends up with one on and one off as Clive posited. It would be interesting to open up one from next year and see if the board's been revised.

    • @stargazer7644

I think they designed it to flash the LEDs or alternate them or something, and then when the 1 million actual led assemblies showed up they found that they didn't connect the leds to tip and ring, they both went to tip, and they said oh crap, how can we fix this?

Years ago, when the 100 mm cigarettes came out, Chesterfield came out with the Chesterfield 101's Their jingle had in it, the words "Just a silly millimeter longer!" that springs to mind every time you come out with anything about the mm, just thought I would make that silly comment. Oh in the Television adds they showed smokers getting their Chesterfield 101's caught in the elevator door, slamming the windows on them and bumping into things because of that silly mm.

Why did they use a pp3 and not 3 (or 4, perhaps) AAAs? Nowadays pp3s are much less common, and relatively much more expensive, and that extra 4 or 5V gives the regulator much more work to do. In fact I guess you wouldn't need a regulator at all using three common 1.5V cells.

    • @electroduk
      @electroduk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well, they don't have to pay for the battery, the buyer does. But it's still odd that they didn't just specify 3 AAA cells, which would give almost exactly the same voltage the regulator outputs. My guess is that the microcontroller can't handle the variation in voltage between charged and discharged cells, so they decided to use a regulator, but it has a minimum voltage drop that necessitated the 9v battery.

Ah yes! The old "Tip" and "Ring" takes me back to the now defunct South East Asia Signal School in Long Bien Vietnam, just outside old Saigon, the two sides of the phone line coming into the ancient Waco 500 Rotary Dial Telephone. You see, they sent us over to Nam after training us to use the field equipment, such as the TA312 telephone, a hand generated ring with two D cells furnishing talk power back to either another field phone, or a Switchboard, the most common being the SB 22 (I think) and the SB 86 (I know, used two of those tied together for CRANE Switchboard in Dong Ba Thin, near Cam Rahn Bay (well on the Bay, but not in the camp, across the bay actually!) So at any rate, when we arrived at the Headquarters of the 18th Engineer Brigade, we found that they had changed from the field phones to the "NEW" rotary telephones, the Western Electric 500 series. Now the dials didn't do a damn thing but piss off we who operated the switchboard, as it made the eye displays go bonkers every time some asshole tried to dial home, but at any rate, not having been trained in the installation of the Waco 500 telephone, they sent us down country to that school to learn how to hook up the stupid wires to the damn phone, like we couldn't have figured that our on our own, well I take that back, I did know some idiots who could not have I guess. I was lucky though, they sent me down over Christmas of 1970, so I got to go to the Bob Hope Show at Long Bien, man that was a cool show for a kid such as me, having never seen anyone more famous then our Commanding General, who was so laid back that nobody knew his name. At any rate, the Tip and Ring were, of course the two sides of the phone line.
Yes, I do ramble on like this in person as well, just ask the wife, she will explain it to you in one million words or less. Perhaps that is why I ramble on, can't get a damn word in crosswise when the good wife of 48 years is in the room.

I was thinking the same thing, the apparatus is just for power and the led for nasal is the only thing that we need, I don't have any idea about "resistors", my question is: can I just connect it on a standard cable phone charger like the one you used so that I won't have to buy 9 volt batteries which quite a hassle? thank you for this video...

A couple of years ago I read a paper on a scientist at NASA that was doing research on ways of growing food in space. He discovered using the Red LED's worked along with blue to take the place of high current grow lights. Along the same time a Russian scientist found red LEDs actually helped in healing wounds faster, helped circulation, reduced swelling and more. Commercial units are expensive. I could not afford one. So I tested using a cheep eBay 10 watt RGB flood. You did a video on the 10watt flood. Used only the Red and held it on my arthritic knees for about 30 min each. The next morning, my knees actually felt better. I now use it about 1 to 2 times a week. It actually helps in swelling, pain, and mobility. It's not psychosomatic because swelling will go from the size of a cantaloupe down to normal by the next morning. More so than they would by not using it. I feel there is some validity in the red LED used for healing. Just saying

I'm not familiar with that product, but it does work if it is 660nm.
I have a black light pen (395nm), and a brand name red therapy LED bulb (660nm).
And they do work. It sounds insane to hear that "light heals", but it is NCBI PubMed researched clinical data.
I had a nasty ear infection (swimmer's ear infection) that I killed, and treated in less than a week; I shone the 395nm light inside my ear cannal to kill the bacteria, and pathogens for less than a minute.
After that, I proceeded to shine the 660nm bulb right next to my ear for 10 minutes to reduce inflammation, accelerate tissue and cell healing.
Thus being said, my ear infection lasted for about 4 days (swelling), and on the 7 day all of the puss was draining out.

The question is - is it possible that the unused pin on the MCU does actually use PWM?
So, originally the pin in use now would still go High when the timer is running, and they were using PWM on the second pin to increase the total drive current?
Maybe they pinched the chip from a different product, as it was easier / quicker than re-programming them?
(or, even more likely - it's a One-Time-Programmable IC, which are generally cheaper?)
I was hoping to see Clive's Oscilloscope appear during the vid. (not a euphemism, btw. :p )
But yeah, very bizarre to go to the extra effort of drilling that track, when the two signals from the MCU a presumably still separate beneath the solder blob?
Is it possible they were trying to use both Output pins in parallel originally? Still very weird to not just remove the solder blob?

If you want to make the DIY version even simpler, there are "5V" LEDs on the market with the current limiting resistor built in. For example at DigiKey: www.digikey.com/products/en/optoelectronics/led-indication-discrete/105?k=&pkeyword=&pv319=33&FV=ffe00069&mnonly=0&page=1&stock=1&nstock=1
I also use these LEDs for simple indicators on µC development boards (like arduino). The small ones have a leg spacing of just about 0.1" so I drop one into two adjacent I/O pins. Cathode output LOW, and anode is my debugging signal LED.

They just keep coming, this is one of your best!
I'd guess the drilled trace mod and 1K pilot dropper are just to extend battery life (as dropping the intensity doesn't drop theraputic effectiveness 'much' - there's not much down from 0). Customer don't want their nasal therapy to eat expensive 9v batteries...
I see one flaw to your design, the LEDs may get a tad warm @ 20ma for nasal "therapy", but then again, maybe that's the infrared supplemental therapy feature of the BC Snoz-o-matic??
If you run across a LED hemorrhoid therapy device at a yard sale, steer clear....
