The 2007 NFL Draft was good - overall. But for quarterbacks - it was terrible.

I still believe to this day that the Raiders would have been better off with Brady Quinn than JaMarcus Russell. Granted, he still would've sucked in Oakland because that franchise was just as dysfunctional as the Browns, but at least Quinn actually put in the effort to be a professional quarterback, unlike JaMarcus.

Yeah not making excuses it's on him but I can't help and think about what all was going on with jamarcus with like almost everyone close to him dying pretty suddenly. Again not making excuses but depression is real and has symptoms that line up to what he was criticized for. Plus in college to my understanding there wasnt a work ethic issue. It is what it is but I can't help think that if he didn't go through all that in a shorter frame he's at least been better at his job. Not great but better

We needed a quarterback that year, so taking any of them would have been bad. I don't agree with what fivepoints said this being the wrong pick in that we should have drafted Megatron. Who's throwing him the ball if we passed on quarterback? I apply this to pretty much all people in life. It all comes down to someone's drive to achieve and do right by themselves. Growing up, I had an neighbor across the street who - in all seriousness - could've been another Elon Musk, Bill Gates, etc., and he blew it all by getting in a bad crowd who used drugs "to be cool." I still wonder sometimes what he could have been had he just stuck with school. Out of all of his friends, he's one of the only ones that even still alive; I attribute that to his unrivaled intelligence. Still, he's lucky to be alive for all of the shit he put into his body.

Here's another for you guys: What if Al Davis had traded for Michael Irvin? When Jimmy Johnson took over the Cowboys, he went to Davis and asked what he'd give him for Irvin (then in his second year). Davis (before old age took him) changed Johnson's mind, reminding him that if he dealt Irvin, then-rookie QB Troy Aikman would have exactly jack and shit to throw to. With that advice, Johnson shifted focus to his only other marketable asset: Running back Hershel Walker.
The rest, as they say, is history.
If they had made the deal, the Raiders could've thrown out a three-receiver set of Irvin, Tim Brown and Willie Gault.

Troy Smith got basically the same treatment in San Fran, despite being the statistically better quarterback in 2010, Alex Smith was given the starting quarterback position 11 times out of 16 and Troy accounted for half of their 6 wins that season despite starting less then half as many games (5 for Troy vs. 11 for Alex). Brady Quinn was also on the wrong end of the greatest QB duel game... that no one saw. Detroit Lions vs. Cleveland Browns, the game was not televised... anywhere, since it was probably blacked out locally for not selling out... and Quinn and Matthew Stafford - in either his first or second year - had an absolutely epic shootout, which Stafford won on a game-winning drive... but in early Stafford fashion, sustaining an injury on the penultimate play that kept him out for several more games. He threw the game-winning TD with that injury to his off shoulder... he visibly couldn't even lift his arm to celebrate the victory. I remember that game, because no one saw it live, but *everyone* was talking about it on Monday...
And there was that incredible audio from the Lions' sideline. After getting crushed on the previous play and sustaining that injury to his non-throwing shoulder, Stafford had to sit out a play, due to the injury timeout. But then Browns coach Eric Mangini called a timeout... which let the mics pick up Stafford on the sideline, "They called a timeout? That means I can go back in, right? Please let me go back in and finish this game, coach, please!"
He went back in, threw the go-ahead TD in obvious pain... and that's why I've always had kind of a soft spot for Stafford. On the losing end of that game, possibly having one of his statistically best games? Brady Quinn. Dude couldn't buy luck in the pros. But, I guess the Browns do that to you. I mean, so do the Lions, but... Stafford endured, and eventually got out.

I actually recognized the majority of the players you mentioned here. I remember back sucking on the dolphins and I remember Kevin Kolb at first playing pretty good with the eagles at least when Michael Vick got injured and it was like yay either quarterback they'll win with and then of course Kevin Kolb just could not sustain the success. I also remember Troy Smith because I remember how strange it was to me that somebody who won the Heisman had to wait until the 5th round to be drafted, but I actually didn't realize the reason why Joe flacco took over as the starter in 2008 was because Troy Smith got sick. That is really unlucky.
That said the only ones I remember being drafted that year where jamarcus russell, Brady quinn, and Troy smith. I didn't realize the other quarterbacks you mentioned were drafted that year. I also remember Troy Smith because he played on the 49ers for a short time as well. It wasn't very good there but he was better than some of the other backup QB's the 49ers were going through at the time.
What I think was really incredible was in 2009 when Matthew Stafford was drafted by the first overall pick from the Lions there was this really close game between the Lions and the browns and the browns had Brady Quinn and he actually played pretty good in that game too, but Matthew Stafford was better and obviously Stafford is still around and playing pretty well for the Rams now so the rest is history there, but the fact that there was actually a close game between a complete bust in Brady Quinn and someone who may be in the Hall of Fame with Matthew Stafford is pretty surprising.

Thigpen was always one of those weird peripheral names in more recent NFL history that keeps my mind goblins awake at night. He goes to Kansas City because he is well wanted by the scouting staff there, gets a chance to start. Larry Johnson goes down and Gailey switches the offense up to a spread system/pistol hybrid once Johnson returns and Thigpen starts overall playing pretty okay (despite them losing repeatedly). Tony Gonzalez, arguably one of the biggest stars on the team at the time, voices support for Thigpen as he feels the offense turned the corner and they needed to spend resources elsewhere to get back to the playoffs. They keep Chan Gailey despite firing the head coach as offensive coordinator, which is a rarity, and you think "this spells good things for Tyler for one more year at least."
This voice, Tony's, gets traded to Atlanta to resume his assuredly Hall of Fame career. The team gets Belichick'd into giving the Patriots a 2nd round pick for Matt Cassel. Then the immortal Todd Haley, ever the impressionable coach as we know, said he would compete with Cassel for the job. Spoilers, they didn't even hide the lack of competition, putting him behind Brady Croyle at firm 3rd on the depth chart. Then Jacksonville comes with their scouting department, goes this guy could be a way more capable backup (then a 37 year old random named Bouman) for David Garrard and who knows, maybe could take over if David struggled again. Chiefs refuse to trade him for a 5th, then trade him later to Miami where he will again be buried by a multitude of QBs. Instead of letting this guy go to Jax for a real shot at a starting job or consistent backup role, he has to prove to Miami that Pat White, their 2nd round pick who never contributed in the NFL, is worse then him.
I didn't follow him in college and I wasn't ever a fan of this guy. But its crazy to think retrospectively how easily a player can, for better or worse, just get absolutely buried by the NFL machine. But maybe the fact he got a shot at all should be good enough, right?

In fact Reid was known for coaching up average QBs to decent QBs and trading them away to suckers for fairly high picks. He swindled Washington out of draft picks for a washed up McNabb. He was able to take a transcendent talent like Michael Vick who was gifted athletically but inconsistent as a passer and made him into a very good passer.
Reid got canned because the team felt while they were always contenders they had gone well over a decade without consistently contending for a superbowl.
