I started firewood because I was tired of paying for bundles and in my mid 30s I was developing early stages of carpal tunnel in both wrists from sitting at a keyboard for the last 25 years.. firewood has helped delay this issue for me..

I invite people over to my firewood gym. I told them they would get a full core work out. We promise when they leave, they will be dripping with sweat. We DO NOT charge membership fees and we offer free water. For some unexplained reason I have gotten no takers.
Jokes aside, I do this for exercise. I had a light stroke a few years ago and started shutting down doing stuff. I finally get to the point I could not do anything without hurting really bad. Then one day I had epiphany, it was the slowing down that was slowly killing me. I called a tree service guy and he dropped of some HUGE oak logs and I got to cutting. After a month I found that I have not felt this great in years.

I’m 16 and was inspired to start a firewood business because of your videos. I went out and bought a splitter hoping I could sell the wood and before you know it I can’t keep up with deliveries. I go up in the mountains and cut down trees and load rounds. I load them up in a stock trailer and come home with 3.5 cord each trip. Then split when I get home. I have a partner for safety but it isn’t working out well. But I have made a few thousand so far and still have another couple weeks of cutting to do. Thankfully the trees are already dead so the moisture content is already close to burn ready. Still trying to sell dried wood like you say. All I can say is thanks for all of your tips and videos!

Hi Chris. The conversation with your client about finding work hit home for me. In the late 70s I purchased a new car. Six months later I lost my job due to the economy. I had a car to pay for. I walked the highways and dug in public trash cans on search of aluminum cans. At the time aluminum was paying a good return. I paid for thar car by dumpster diving.

I baled alot of hay during the summers growing up. Always had farmers that would hire the football team linemen that lived in the gym to help also. These bulls would always try to do all the work with their arms and would be toast by lunchtime or puking their lunch right after. I always knew it would be a long day, whenever I would see this type of help in the morning...😕

Long and lean muscle structure is more effective than the bulked up one and done.
I will admit that before covid I worked out with a trainer four times a week. I would tell him that I came to the gym to relax.
I would show him pictures of "the twigs" that I was working on. I asked him to spend a day with me and I would have him buried by noon.
We were working toward Senior Olympics Powerlifting. Then Covid.

Uncle Joe's inflation (10% what a joke, more like 25%) has hit the Woodyard.
Pull in my yard. Load your pickup $150.
I bring it to you, within 10 mi., and stack it, $200.
Cookie pile wood, you load $100.
    Custom cut $300
    16 x 20 x 20 in bundles $10
No complaints so far, just questions.
When can you bring it?, or when can I come get it?
Averaging selling Face Cords, (Ricks in my neck of the woods) and full Cords 1 or 2 a week in 95-103 degree tempatures, which astounds me! Not to mention Campfire bundles.
I get to the yard around 9am (after watching a few woodyard videos) lol.
I leave the woodyard around 9:30 pm, or dark, whichever comes first.
The tree guys around here have to pay the landfill $36.00 per ton to dump their wood. They load limbs and dump them, but bring the logs to me for free. No junk wood. No stumps. No chasing wood, like I did last year.
I am rapidly getting behind on splitting with the Arien 27 ton "glacier special".
I now have aprox 128 Face Cords, only half of which is seasoned but a lot of folks buy it green to stock up.
Retirement? I've heard of it but what the hell is it? Lol
Time to bite the bullet and join the big boys.
Tomorrow morning I am calling Andrew Easton and ordering an Axis!
    Leaving the Condo life and
Leasing a nice house on a hill across the street overlooking my 10 acre woodyard.
I have become the "Wood Czar" of Hot Springs, Arkansas. (Takes a sip of Moonshine).
Weighed 238 lbs. Last year in July.
    65 yrs. @ 185 lbs. now.

You would be amazed at how many gym members up in the big city will drive around the parking lot and wait for a parking spot that is 18 feet closer to the front door,
So that they can save 16 or 18 steps too the front door.
    It baffles the mind.
It sounds like most of your customers are pretty ok to work for.
That makes your job more enjoyable, that's very important.
But to me that shows me how out going and accommodating you must be with people.
Customer rapport and courtesy is every bit as important as the size and condition of the sticks you offer.

It's almost a lost art these days.

I regard it the same - paid Gym. My eldest pays to go lift weights. Baffles me. I get to lift weights as often as I like & get paid to lift - I'm carved out of granite at 50 btw - I still have a 6 pack - all from "Paid to lift" Wood-Gym. He's kinda paunchy, tbh... Gym aside..
I say - "Hey, Kid! Help me lift in this wood!" - he passes, usually - too hard - he helped load 2 dumper loads of felled logs, couldn't move for days afterwards, said his body was broken from loading the heavy wood.. Hmm.. Gym must be pretty easy by comparison - I do 3 loads a day pretty much every day, even "weekends".. That's lifting 4-6 ton by hand, in a day.. A lotta "Reps". :-) You have to fell it first too - try that, report back on how you now have energy to go do "Gym",,, I know I don't.. Felling wood is tough work. It's why I have the same trouser size as I did when I was 18.
One "Benefit" I have over most is what I harvest (for reasons) is all at or under 20% moisture "at felling" - I test almost everything, it's not a guess, 23% moisture is "Unusually high" - so it burns right off the bat - no waiting. You can burn it today in your stove., If it sits for a short while, split into quarters, I hit average 13-14% moisture within a few weeks as we have great airflow in our storage. My "model" is very different - so "delivery" happens, but it's not really delivery - it's driving wood to retail areas - so similar, but different, but still "delivering" - if I sat here, waiting for folk to come to me, I'd starve - we're too far from anyone for them to bother. :-) .

Hey Chris, we used to offer “Free Delivery” and just build it into the price but we found it made our firewood seem very expensive compared to adverts that put up firewood price plus delivery.
This year we’re going advertise our firewood differently and do it plus delivery as I find it should show to the customers that we’re not more expensive. Love to get your thoughts on this topic in a more in-depth future video 👍

Hey Michael. I sell firewood also and I include it in the price of the wood. I see people selling firewood at a set price and then they say delivery fee. Well delivery fee could very substantially depending on distance. I pick a distance and have a set price. It's simpler that way for me also. Hope this helps

I built my business on free delivery. I just add on to my price to cover it. Very few people do or will deliver firewood, that is one thing that sets me apart from others. Any thing less than 10 miles is free, and every 10 miles over is $25 extra. It has worked well for me for years now.
