A heavy underdog going into this game, Penn State upset a Drew Brees-led Purdue squad that would go on to clinch a Rose Bowl berth. This was also the first game following the tragic spinal cord injury to Adam Taliaferro, making this win a rather emotional one for the Nittany Lions and for coach Joe Paterno, who could barely keep it together during the post-game interview with Lynn Swann.

Amazing the way this team banded together and bounced back after getting blown out and having the ghastly Taliaferro injury. Crazy to think we faced one of the best QBs to ever pick up a football 3 times and he never beat us. This game was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise lousy season.

I remember that in the closing minutes of this game, the Pennsylvania Lottery took the screen and put the game at about 30% of its normal size on a 480i TV. It was impossible to see either presentation. Those were the days.

2000 was a very odd season for Purdue. They finished in a 3 team tie for first in the Big10 and got the Rose Bowl bid because the defeated the teams they were tied with in Michigan and Northwestern. They also won games against Ohio State and Wisconsin, the 2 teams directly below them. Their only losses in conference game against Penn State (5-7) and Michigan State (5-6) who were both in the middle of some down times. Purdue finished in the top 25 in four consecutive seasons from 1997-2000 after having a losing record in the 12 years before that streak. It was their first Rose Bowl since 1966 and remains their most recent trip to Pasadena for New Year’s Day. You might never see Purdue and Northwestern tied at the top of the Big10 at the end of the season again. Even with the conference split into two divisions.

Paterno teams always played this type of offensive team well. Why PSU went undefeated against Drew Brees. Similar success against Ty Detmer when BYU was beating other teams like Miami, and Doug Flutie the decade before that when BC was a top 10 team, and still lost to an unranked PSU in one of the down years between national championships.
