I would recommend that you use 7z as the extension and check the encrypt file name check box as this prevents you from seeing the archive without the password. If you then need to change the extension, just do it as the file names will already have been encrypted. Remember that to change the extension of a file, you need to check the visible extensions check box in the views window.
Thank you! I hate that error message. I was under the impression that the file was corrupted. Why not just say password needed instead of "file could not be created"
The only problem I have with this is that I can still edit the encrypted folder with a program like Notepad or Notepad++. If I, or anyone else, were to alter any of the characters presented therein, the folder can no longer be decrypted. Does anyone know how to prevent the user from doing this? Thanks.
When I right click on a folder I do not get the 7Zip option, even though I have 7Zip. I get the usual options like open, open in new window, pin to start, cut ect. So I cannot encrypt this way. I can when I right click choose Sent to and then compressed (zip folder). So yes I can zip the documents. My files are now nicely zipped and I can extract them again, but I cannot encrypt them. One would think somewhere in 7Zip there is an option to encrypt, but if it is there I cannot find it. So can I therefore encrypt something that has already been zipped with 7Zip? If not then I have to say 7Zip is a pretty crappy program, but maybe I am missing something and here is where you guys come is, so please help.
It sounds like you haven't allowed 7-Zip to be in your context menu that opens when you right click. It's a quick fix, but you will need to run it as an administrator to make this change. Just open up the Windows start menu, search for 7-Zip, right click 7-Zip file manager and select'Run as administrator'. Once this opens, go to Tools --> options --> 7-Zip tab and make sure that the box next to 'Intergrate 7-zip to shell context menu' is ticked.
I don't quite get it. Does 7z implement the password into the key with which it encrypts files, i.e. is password a key in itself? If it is, and you feed it an incorrect password, why does it tell you the password is incorrect instead of just decrypting the files improperly?

Thank you. This was a clear, concise explanation. And, it worked like a charm.

Thank you so much, it was very informative, and was able to password protect my files.
Very helpful ❤❤

only encrpy individual file only, not folder
What program will encrypt a folder and the filenames within it?
Can we protect the folder from getting deleted?

This WAS a good idea but it doesn't work in Windows 10 64 bit Pro late 2018

7zip knows the password is correct when the 4 byte header successfully decrypts into "7ZIP". Forgive my late answer, hope you're well :D
Thanks :)))
What is the password?
Don't people from Oxford talk posh!
