That's not the question, a Tiger was a Tiger and had a performance that outclassed the other tanks and tank hunters by far. A Tiger could survive far more hits than a Panzer IV or a StuG III Lang and destroy every enemy tank. At some actions on the Eastern Front one or two Tigers sometimes saved the entire front section and destroyed 10, 20, 30 or even more Soviet tanks. No Panzer IV could do this. @@arthurdirindinjr1792

Building hundreds of tanks with no fuel or crews isn't an objectively better plan than building a smaller number of heavier vehicles. Jagdtiger did poorly because Germany was lost, regardless of what you did. Challenger 2 is 75 tonnes, if you have plenty of resources you can make it work.

And when it comes to germany building heavier tanks it was very reasonable already in 1942 hitler ordered for the production of heavier tanks like the tiger and panther because he expected based on intelligence that in 1943 the soviets would come with heavier tanks also wich didnt happen until 1944 but atleast it gave germany the advantage in 1943 onward in tank superiority

"After basic training Knispel went onto Panzer training to operate the Pz I, II, and IV. On October 1st Knispel was transferred to a “Field Unit” of the 3rd Company of the 29th Panzer Regiment, 12 Panzer Division where he finished his training as a loader/gunner on the Pz IV. During training at Putlos he first demonstrated his abilities as a gunner; he had a gift of total three-dimensional vision as well as extraordinary reflexes. But to Knispel’s dismay, he remained a loader.
Knispel first saw action in August 1941 in a Pz IV tank. During Operation Barbarossa he quickly rose to the position of gunner under the command of Lt. Hellman. By January 1942 Knispel had returned to Putlos to undergo his training in the new Tiger tank and at the time he was already credited with 12 tanks victories. His next home was the 1st Company of the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion where he took part in the Battle of Kursk as flank cover to the 7th Panzer Division. From there he went on to commanding a Tiger II within the same unit."

    All true, in the west.
However, reports stated also that even the Tiger2 had sometimes trouble penetrating the armour of the IS2. While the IS2 had no trouble in destroying the Tiger2 with it's enormous gun. In that circumstance the Jagdtiger would have made sense. If combined with air superiority.

Personally, I feel Hitler should have concentrated on attack stukas with tank busting cannons. Also, as you had stated , build 100's of smaller type tanks with wide tracks and a gun that didn't tax engine and transmissions. Though it's possible they felt if they could show these huge tigers that the allies would be in shock mode thinking Germany isn't defeated yet?.

Building (much) larger numbers of simpler and more reliable tanks would have made more sense, that seems to be generally agreed. An increased use of Stukas with anti-armour cannon would be dependent on German air-superiority, something that the Germans had lost mid-war.

    This video looks incomplete
On the east front, Jagd Tiger was more effective and cost-effective, due to some heavier enemy tanks. On the west, Shermans could have been destroyed by regular tanks.
Force concentration on itself is not a bad idea - if you cant fuel 4 tanks, but 1 stronger tank. But the Jagdtiger and Tiger 2 were overkill in that. Besides, quite unreliable.
Best choice were smaller tankkillers, like the STUG III and similar types. But overall, Germany had not enough OIL to win the war or even get a stalemate. Just enough to avoid a rapid defeat.
So, regarding cost-effective you have to take fuel consumption into account, allong with build-cost and win/loss ratio.

All tanks were slow... the Tiger alone was the best tank in ww2 and that was a heavy and slow tank. They just couldn't produce enough to keep up with Russia and America. as far as SUPER heavies, they produced very little. They knew they weren't practical on the battlefield. Neither were the various Tigers, which also broke down at high rates as when they were introduced, the stage of the war where they made sense was long over. By the later stages of the war the Germans were facing so many shortages of not only material but manpower, particularly exsprenced panzer crewmen. They realized they were never going to out produce the Soviets in tank production so they put their hopes into superior AFVs and better tactics and training. Add to that the British and American production of tanks, out producing the allies was never possible. So Hitler encouraged bigger and more and more outlandish tanks being produced up to the huge Mause PZKW VIII.

According to sources, the average kill to loss rate for the King Tigers were 5.74 to 1, with the most successful unit, the 13th company of Panzer-regiment Grossdeutschland having a 16.67 kill to loss ratio (they lost 6 tanks to the destruction of 100 enemy AFV’s).

    • @markaxworthy2508
      @markaxworthy2508 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@MyLateralThawts But does that just include those that saw action or were lost in action? What about all those that were lost to arms other than tanks, or never reached action and were found on rail cars unable to enter service due to the disruption of communications towards the end of the war, or all those abandoned or burnt by their crews for mechanical failure, as recounted here for Jagdtigers, which had similar internal mechanics?
Are there records of the nearly 500 King Tigers built knocking out 2,500-3,000 enemy tanks, which is what a 5.74 to 1 ratio would require? From June 6, 1944 through May 15, 1945 US tank and tank destroyer losses in the European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (Western Front) were around 7,000. Tigers lost in the West apparently totalled 171, of which only 62 are known to have been in combat, not necessarily against other tanks. Are there records of them knocking out around 1,000 Western Allied tanks?
According to William Manchester in "The Arms of Krupp", five bomber raids between 22 September and 7 October 1944 destroyed 95% of the Henschel factory, resulting in the loss of six hundred fifty-seven Tiger IIs. Presumably these were only part-assembled, but, if true, this was more than were actually completed. These are presumably not factored into loss ratio calculations.

Apparently 171 Tiger IIs were lost on the Western Front. Do we have hard evidence that they knocked out the approximately 1,000 Allied tanks a 5.74 to 1 ratio would require?

Ultimately, it didn’t matter because Germany bit off more than they could chew and lacked the necessary resources, trucks and manpower to win the war they started.

Everything after the Tiger I seemed to be rushed into combat without having all the issues settled first. With JS 1 and JS 2 tanks supported by hordes of T-34s you needed to hit them at long range and have survivability. You just cant put that much weigh on engines/drive train combinations that have not been designed for that kind of weight. Yes I get it the Soviets are beating on the back door and the Americans just landed on their front porch. However if the Panther and heaver tanks had been through their proper development phases, I believe they would have made a bit of a difference. The 3 SS Division initially wore similar emblems on their collar, but this was more due their creation from and initial association with the SS Totenkopfverbände, and changed to normal SS dress codes as the war progressed.
