This wannabe mish-mash of Layla and Badge? About as exciting as watching paint dry. This is what happens when the record company puts pressure on the artist.
I love that second solo so much! When it comes down to it, Eric plays the blues only. But he plays it like nobody can. It's a combination of melody, all those licks, his speed, his controlled maneuvers, his aura and much more. Mayer once said, "Even housewives stop their work to listen to Clapton's guitar."
It's not that hard, main solo starts on the same note but an octave higher and alternatives between the two. Easy when you know how but hard when you don't.
I was at this concert, right at the back of the "gods" top balcony. Was an amazing show. He was keeping the best songs for last, and mid show during a few seconds gap when it was all quiet, some guy shouted "Play Layla!" like he was angry he didn't recognise anything yet..... my friend and I went home laughing about it, saying "play layla!!" to each other haha
Eric is such a class act. I love the solo on the recording, but this one is outstanding. He claims he's not "wired" to repeat a solo once it's done, so every solo is from the heart. That's why every one pierces the heart of the listener.
Haha, this is how I learned to play songs more accurately before tablature was widely available with the internet, because I never learned to read music. There were tabs, but they were limited to getting lucky if there was a printed version in a book. There were vhs tapes instructional videos but they weren't always what you wanted. And rewinding a vhs tape over and over was a pain and not as accurate as clicking a button on an online video. Was way harder to learn guitar back then. Most of the time picking things up by ear, rewinding your cassette tape over and over, watching and rewinding a vhs tape over and over, or really searching for tabs or sheet music if you knew how to read music. I remember when I first got a digital cd player and it made rewinding back to the part I was learning so much easier 😂 Now there's TH-cam videos on literally every song you wanna learn and a step by step break down showing you how to play it, and rewinding on a computer or smart device is so much easier and less time consuming. And don't gotta worry your wearing out you cassette or vhs tape from rewinding too much. Lol. I believe that's why there's so many more talented young guitar players now, learning has become more streamlined with all the technology. You used to be a prodigy if you were really good as a kid, now really good kid guitar players are a dime a dozen. I mean that in a good way, it's nice people can learn faster and easier. It makes people wanna stick with it, vs. having to learn by ear and get frustrated and quit. Sorry, long reply but your comment like unlocked memories of learning that way 😂
Oh what a feeling I get when I'm with you You take my heart into everything you do And it makes me sad for the lonely people I walked that road for so long Now I know that I'm one of the lucky people Your love is making me strong I've had enough bad love I need something I can be proud of I've had enough bad love No more bad love And now I see that my life has been so blue With all the heartaches I had till I met you But I'm glad to say now that's all behind me With you here by my side And there's no more memories to remind me Your love will keep me alive I've had enough bad love I need something I can be proud of I've had enough bad love No more bad love I've had enough bad love I need something I can be proud of I've had enough bad love No more bad love I've had enough bad love I need something I can be proud of I've had enough bad love No more bad love

Here’s the story on Bad Love: when Eric turned over the master tapes for Journeyman the boys over at Warner Bros told him, Eric, this is really great. Fine work you are doing here. We are really very pleased with what you’ve come up with so far. We just have one question; where’s Layla? To which Eric replied, Huh? Eric. Layla is missing. There’s no Layla on this album. Eric very calmly explained, uh, look fellas, you see, that’s really not how this works; you only get one Layla per career, if you are extremely lucky, that is. Not one Layla per album. Nevertheless, Eric, be a good lad and get right back into the studio and give us what we are asking for. Attaboy. So this rather tepid piece of garbage is what he and Mick Jones came up with; uninspired and uninspiring. It was Mick Jones who suggested the Badge style bridge. Now, if the record companies can put that kind of pressure on a legendary figure like E.C., what kind of a chance does the new artist have?
One of the best riffs in rock history.
Late 80's/early 90's = best Clapton. Just brilliant work with one hell of a band. That riff is from another planet.
The cigarette…. Pure class.
