Ferrari 488 GT Modificata: Accelerations, Sound & Turbo Flutter Noise!

  • I managed to get some clips of Ferrari's new track-only weapon during the Club Competizioni GT, a freshly created club for owners of old Ferrari GT race cars and during which owners of the 488 GT Modificata will be able enjoy their new toy. The 'Modificata' was born with the idea of having a car that shared in all aspects the soul and technologies of both the 488 GT3 and GTE race cars but without all those limits imposed by technical and sporting regulations of the GT3 and GTE class for the BoP (Balance of Performance). The resulting machine is able to produce up to 700hp (instead of the typical 600 of the GT3/GTE) thanks to some components modifications made to the engine and the use of more extreme maps. The car will be built in a very limited number of examples which will be fully customizable by their owners.
    Ever since it was unveiled, I've been trying to figure out if there were any obvious differences between the Modificata and the GT3/GTE but unfortunately on the external look I haven't found any. To be precise, the 488 GT Modificata shares the exact same body of the 488 GT3 Evo 2020 so it's technically impossible to distinguish them if they should be simultaneously on the track during the same test day (plus, thanks to the Modificata in this video, you can see it can also feature the additional LEDs lights used for night sessions in endurance racing...).
    Of course I focused my attention on its sound in order to spot some differences between the GT3/GTE cars but I must admit it's very difficult to distinguish them if you do not have a trained ear on the first two. The exhaust sound is very very similar, but due to higher turbo pressure the 488 GT Modificata seems to have an extra 'blowing air' note, more typical of the 488 Challenge or 488 road cars. Turbo flutter noise is also slightly louder than 488 GT3/GTE race cars. The thing that I really distinctly noticed is related to gearshifts sound: 488 GT3 typically makes deep 'explosions' on upshifts, 488 GTE sometimes makes very loud bangs, while this Modificata has a very clean noise on upshifts. They are very fast but it's very rare to ear an actual ''pop'', thing that is more evident when releasing the throttle pedal and a loud bang may happen (never heard on GT3/GTE cars).
    One last one more thing that might make you recognize the 488 GT Modificata on track is the brutal way it unleashes the power out of slow corners. And the traction control often comes into play.
    Luckily this time I was sure it was a Modificata both because some lucky Italian journalists had the opportunity to do some passenger laps during that day (and of course they shared the article or videos on the internet: it.motorsport.com/ferrari/new...
    or www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it... ). But also because this car was already at Monza the days before, during the Ferrari Challenge Europe racing weekend, which was full of media and photographers. A friend of mine was kind enough to send me some pictures of the interiors and it seems that all these cars will have a plate on the dashboard (in front of the passenger) stating it's a Modificata and not 'just' a GT3 or GTE.
    What do you think?

      Which is still weird to me, because Ferrari for 100 yrs, has been the opposite of subdued. The FXX on the Enzo platform as one example of many, is much MUCH louder. Times have changed I guess. You can say the same for the C6/C7.R vettes Versus the C8.R. I appreciate the efficiency and technology of new engine platforms but sometimes I just miss the barbaric/guttural sounds

      @@HonestDiecast I know that the turbos quiet it down way too much. It has to be the exhaust manifold set up, because the street 488 and Pista have a soulful hum with the proper uncorked exhaust. The 458 GT2/GTE sound better compared to these, of course.

    In person the F430 and 458 were so loud they actually hurt my eardrums. I was surprised at how quiet the 488 was just by slapping on a turbo.
    Why are some cars still loud but not others. Even F1 cars are quiet and they rev to what, 15k? (Which is impressive but compared to the insane numbers from the V8 era it's nothing)

    • @daedalus_20v

      It's an interesting question, because I see a lot of people seem to think "turbo" automatically = muted, strangled, suffocated. But there's too many counter-examples for that to be true. My three all-time favorite turbo race cars, the F40 LM, the Sport Quattro S1, and the Sauber C9 are all as loud as anything else on track!

      @@RS-nq8xk Exactly, it's not due to twin-scroll design if the Novitec 488GTB still sounds like this: th-cam.com/video/iSDS1vT8ksQ/w-d-xo.html It has to be down to exhaust routing and packaging for some kind of performance/efficiency gain on track that just also happens to make the cars super quiet.

    Ferrari seems to be a little lazy in making their racecars look different. :) Unlike Porsche where you can see obvious differences between a cup, gt3 or rsr.
    I think I managed to find some very small differences between the various 488 racecars.
    The 2021 488 GTE doesn't have those "slats" (openings) in the front fender to release the hot air. On the GTE the fender is completely closed.
    On the GTE the diffuser has 2 horizontal strips on the bottom in the middle part, the GT3 and Modif. have all vertical lines.
    Also the exhaust has a vertical strip on the GTE and Modificata, but not on the GT3.
    So
    GT3 no vertical strip and slats
    GTE with vertical strip and no slats, different diffuser
    Modif. with vertical strip and slats
    btw: I'm releasing a 488 GTE video tomorrow. :) Pure coincidence.

    • @19Bozzy92
      @19Bozzy92  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't wait to see the video, my friend ;)
      As for your analysis, it's absolutely correct. The only problem is that in 2019 it happened to me to see a GT3 with that vertical element in the exhaust. It was during a 24h Series race at Mugello in which GTE cars are not allowed. But except for that occasion, yes I've never seen that exhaust's vertical element on any GT3s, so in theory GT3 2020 body + vertical strip = Modificata.
      Last year I managed to write an article in order to put in comparison all the aesthetic differences of the 488 GTE and GT3 cars, showing also what was introduced with the 2018 Evo kits on both cars. I should complete it by also adding what was new with the Evo 2020 package on the GT3s and talk about this Modificata, but I'm always short on time to take care of that website.. If you want to have a look at the article, here's the link: www.themarbles.it/2020/06/ferrari-488-gt3-488-gte-the-fraternal-twins/

      @JMartinni 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The GT3 and GTE chassis are almost identical. You can switch a GT3 to GTE and vice versa with changing only the regulation relevant parts, which includes engine (even though it is technically the same), electronics and some aero bits. This "GT Modificata" is ultimately just a regular car with the intent to (and support for) being sold to private customers instead of teams.

      @pmayo7894 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With more aggressive aero, the lower horsepower figures are a moot point. GT3 cars are faster than the road-going ones in terms of lap times.
