This episode of Thanjavur (Tanjore) Travel Vlog explore the traditional method of Bronze casting by few hundred families in and around Thanjavur, situated on the banks of the river Kaveri. They practice this art by the traditional method of Lost Wax Method and they are able to make the cast with the sticky clay of the river basin. It's quite popular hand-made art which require highly sophisticated skills.
The artisans make use of the Bee Wax and natural plant-based resins melt it by heating and allow it to cool down a bit and thicken when it is poured into the water.Before it looses heat the artisan need to make idol figures with melted and thickened wax.And then it is covered with the clay from the river with two openings and keep it for sun dry for 3 days.While heating the wax will come out of the opening and the mold is ready.The Five metals as mentioned in the video...is heated to high temperature and poured into the mold to make the cast without any air bubble in it.Now it's time for molten to cool down as it is kept under the ground for about 02 weeks.Once the outer mud is taken off to get the bronze idol in crude form ,and by filing and polishing with final beautification...gives the artisan the joy for his creation.
Amazing to see the Making of the Lost Wax bronze casting at the artisan's workshop...visit and buy direct from artisans and make sure you don't bargain which make their heart feel bad. Instead pay little more and make them happys o that they could survive and will motivate the younger generation to carry on with the art form than left for extinction.
