    I do remember finding OSR people on Google+.
    It was awkward. I had been dabbling in all of the old versions of D&D for years, operating under the belief that the old didn't have to be abandoned and the new shiny product wasn't exactly the superior. Then I found this fairly arrogant and judgmental clique of prescriptivist gamers on a less popular social media platform, a clique who seemed to get off on telling others how they had to approach classic RPG's. I also recall the story people, who were absolutely annoying.
    I just played like Treebeard and haroomed off into my own corner of the world, on no one's side because no one seemed to be on my side.

    Back in college I really enjoyed the storytelling game mechanics. We got our hands on Vampire / Mage / Werewolf and used it to basically recreate the Blade and Underworld movies as a setting. I've always had gaming groups of people I know in real life, and didn't really know that there was all this online politics attached.

    My only issue with the OSR scene is the purists. Whether it's the ideologues or the 'no true scotsman' types that consider any game except their favorite to be 'not real osr'. It gets tiring, trying to talk about OSRs. Nowadays I just whip out whatever ruleset and say "we're playing this tonight. Roll up some barbarians." The players will tell me what they like or don't like about the system, and that's ultimately what matters. The chatter on the message boards is mostly irrelevant. I honestly only watch you because I enjoy and admire your work ethic and creative process, not for your specific opinions on the OSR scene. I just buy books and see if they're fun. Imagine being lucky enough to have a good group, and instead of putting energy into having a great game, malding in some cyber corner about a hack Twitter weirdo.

    Do any of the OSR systems have early blackpowder technology?
    I know 2E AD&D had Arquebus, just seeing if that got exported to any OSR (or even expanded, how, etc)

    Them calling you things like "trust fund baby" is the usual projection. I've met and interacted with these kind of people in real life, and they're the ones that have never had to work hard for anything in their entire lives; that's why they can never get their projects and kickstarters done, they have ZERO work ethic. They waste money on their hobbies, talk about how they're better than us; and then fall back crying to their parents when rent comes due (the parents they totally hate and are so much better than don't you know).

    I remember doing an essay on Nixon in school. Nixon irked a lot of Republicans by spending most of the party war chest on his own re-election. So the presidential election, in which an incumbent president like Nixon does have a big advantage if the economy is not a shambles, was a landslide for Nixon. I am fairly sure I also remember the rest of the election, because elections are general elections and not presidential elections even if we treat them that way, was one where Republicans performed badly. Nixon also did his historic visit to China that year. McGovern also got mired in a scandal during the election. The Democrat establishment of course established the narrative that McGovern lost purely from being too populist and radical. Nevermind the scandal and how important the campaign funding always is. Nevermind how those most shocked by McGovern were going to vote for Nixon anyway. So it is always very complex, but the establishment will always teach you that you can only win by running establishment hacks. It also allowed them to put in a system of superdelegates so everyday Democrtas could never override the wishes of the party establishment ever again. That "need to run with the guy not too radical to win" narrative got them to run Biden, who won by a margin of only IIRC 40,000 to 60,000 votes. In a year when a crisis meant Trump could easily, whether it was his fault or not, lose in a 1932 style Herbert Hoover loss, Democrtas came out of November with fewer seats in the House than before, a failure to win the Senate, and a total squeaker of a presidential win. Doubling down for too long on "remember McGovern, vote for the establishment" ends up here.

      It probably didn’t hurt that the draft (and draftees being sent to Vietnam) had essentially been ended in 1972. Had to interview a Vietnam vet from the end of the draft for school, and he said everyone as they got to the end of Boot Camp everyone was wondering who’d get sent to Vietnam. Final,y, one of the drill instructors got tired of this being everyone’s concern and told them no draftees were going to Vietnam unless they volunteered. However, you only had to serve one year if you volunteered to Vietnam whereas non-volunteers were probably going to pull two years in Alaska or Germany. Dude chose Vietnam because he was afraid Alaska or Germany would be too cold for him, and he wanted to get everything done as soon as possible.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're not wrong about your analysis, but McGovern really was quite far to the extreme. Had things gone a little different he might not have suffered the massacre he did, but he was still just too far to one side to have had a real chance of winning at the time. Carter was more clever, later on, as he ran on a more centrist platform than he really was (a tradition later followed by Obama and Biden).

    • @lordslaar4808
      @lordslaar4808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RPGPundit I try to avoid the use of the word "extreme" as it evokes images of violence or tinfoil hats. McGovern was definitely at the very far end of where the Overton Window was in 1972 but he was definitely still inside the Overton Window of what we are allowed to talk about. I think 1972, especially the way Nixon ploughed all the funds into himself, would have been a very hard election to win for any Democrat. I do not at all agree Biden and Obama ran as to the right of where they actually are (which is what I suspect you mean by more centrist). I think people forget how far both parties moved to the right between 1980 and now, and especially 1992 to now. It is huge. The pre-1980 Republicans and Democrats were very different parties. Not only that, but since LBJ basically threw away the South to support civil rights leading up to 1968, the Dixiecrats, southern Democrats to the right of the Republicans, would gradually lose to Republicans in the South. LBJ made the Nixon southern strategy viable. In 1972, the Democrats had had no elections past 1968 from which to adjust to a complete paradigm shift. Also, although I agree McGovern was very unlikely to win, he was much more viable in 1972 than he would have been before 1968 or after 1980.

      Call it 23 years of making a living on their algorithms and watching their unethical business practices. As a company they have a very long list and track record of launching products and features for this type of data labeling and would never admit it in my opinion.
      In my late 20s they were paying me to install Firefox on as many users as possible. I was buying clicks from them for 5 cents and they were paying me $1 every 2 visits due to the 50% conversion rate. They were doing this in order to launch their browser and web api tech which they needed to take their user metric based algorithms forward.
      Now we live in a world where they can detect content authorship without the google+ author markup and people ask "why bing has such bad results" while having their confirmation bias confirmed with every search.
      Sorry for the rant but they are the worst company on earth yet I buy their stock and feed my kids off the same math.
      I'll stop now and understand if you do not agree with me.

      I wanted to add that, if it's a storygame and they make decisions based on group consensus rather than what the universe will plausibly throw at the players. Check for Falling Damage rules (increasing damage with distance fallen, up to a limit brought on by terminal velocity). Check for other rules which allude to the physics of the imaginary world. If a game doesn't have any of these things, it's a fake RPG.

    Congratulations for your success. Honour to whom honour is due, and am sure you create great content. It is fine if you make enough money of it to make a living and even more. Good for you. Others (like me) work on projects "very voluntarily and extra-professionally" as my "boss" says, and just for the sake of it. I earn my money elsewhere and I am happy I do not rely on sales... (I am a historian if you care...)
    Sorry - but I have to say this: You are the first person in the community I have ever heard talking disrespectful like ... that and I listened to some of your and many other peoples videos. It sounded very wrong and it shocked me. You call yourself "shitlord" - so be it, this is not my cup of tea.
    Luckily I can still return my latest purchases - as well reseached and high quality they may be. I just received them and could not have a look. I bought them because of a friends recommendation, but I will not keep material made by a person who obviously detests me for who I am and what I do. I am not a "woke person" though and I have been criticizing WotC for many years for what they are doing, and I did the same with TSR before...
    I won't judge you as a person - I do not know you. But by how you talk and what you say it is obvious your books are not for people like me. So I will not keep them. A pity, but I am a principled person of high moral standards.
    Remember, I do not return them because because their quality which I cannot judge but because of what you say and how you say it. Your disrespectfulness drove me away.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm disrespectful to people who disrespect and wish nothing but harm to my hobby, yes. I don't know why you would think my books are not for you; are you a Marxist, or a Critical Theory Postmodernist? Do you believe in racial segregation? Do you think that Western Civilization is evil? Do you think orcs are meant to be black people? Do you think that heroes slaying monsters is somehow "problematic" or that heroic ideas are somehow 'oppressive'?
      In that case, maybe you wouldn't want to purchase my books, sure. Not because my books have any modern political messaging in them at all, they don't, but because you would obviously stand against me and my own views; and of course my books do think of good and evil as real things, think that the Heroic ideal is a good thing, and that defending civilization from chaos or barbarism are a good thing.
      But if you think that I would be disrespectful to people for their race, color, sexuality or gender, then you've been listening to lies about me. My books treat all human races equally, and two of them are dedicated to non-western culture (Arrows of Indra, and Sword & Caravan). A book I wrote (Arrows of Indra) was the first RPG rulebook ever to feature a trans character on the cover, and goes into detail about the role of 3rd-gender people in ancient India.

      @@RPGPundit Your books are not for me because of your hate and disrespectfulness against me - as a person, even though you did not directly adress me in person. But you ridcule and spread hate about people like me in your videos, all over the place. It is toxic. And I am just listening to what you are saying in your videos. I am not listening to anybody else - I am a historian, Ad Fontes, I listen to the primary sources first. After that I have to get everything into context...
      Yes, I am a Marxist, I a a SocDem, I am even a party member of a socialist party. But you seem prejudiced concerning what this means. Maybe you have only met radicals and extremists, I cannot say. But the caricature you consider "marxism" or "leftism" is absurd. My party leads the German government atm, half of our federal states have a SocDem government and most of them have a centrist-progressive government. We do not have bands of communist vigilants around here, policing peoples language, you are not jailed because you are white, male, hetero and cis (and you won't be) or don't use inclusive language in everyday life. And you still can buy and play any game you want, the way you want. There is not "thought police" around here, our constitution and civil rights are intact. Even though some conspiracy-theorists think otherwise... whatever. Back on topic...
      You detest "bourgeois progressive leftists" - a contradictio in adiecto - la bourgeoisie, those are people who own means of production. They mostly leant to ordo-liberal or libertarian, neo-libertarian economic views. Some are even neo-cons or paleo-cons. Only a few of those will hold any leftist or progressive ideas, more likely conservative or reactionary politcal agendae. Progressive can be anything from social ordo liberals or neoliberals, greens, even some of the methodist/EC/Disciples/Catholics leaning to a Social Gospel... Most Democrats and still a bunch of Republicans remain on the "progressive" spectrum, esp. economic-wise, but also concerning civil rights, health care, pro choice, LGBT-topics. Leftist, well, you seem to mean something very different from what I do. We work for free healthcare, free education (kindergarden to university up to PhD are free here...), free meals at school for every child, regenerative energies, equality, protection of the environment, protection of minorities ( yes, there are nations in Germany who do not have their own state, like Friesen, Sorbs and Danes), workers rights and much much more. And we still do not have communism here. And nobody wants it. Because we know it failed. What leftists are working for is democratic socialism and social democracy. So that everyone can live freely, equal and in solidarity the way they want...
      Obviously you did not ever meet progressive leftists because what you are drawing is a raw caricature of something you do not know yet. Being disrespectful shows weekness. If you do not have the welfare of those in mind whom you are mocking you are simply sarcastic and nihilist, it lacks any point of ethics, principles. It isn't cynicism/kynikism at all. You are sarcastic, using your language as a weapon. You act like you were hurt - and you are counterattacking, to hurt others in an all out "flurry of blows". You hit the wrong people. And it isn't entertaining.
      PS: I am a writer of historical rpg material myself, working on a 250 pages regional add on atm, the next projects are allready visible, Far East and Subsahara ... I do not get anything for it. It is my hobby. I am also a social worker, an admin, a project manager, parent, spouse, historian, political and geo scientist - still 120 pages of medieval latin to go for my PhD... I am also a grognard since the mit 80s and DM since 1989... You sound like being leftist, a hard working (and successful) person and and an old-school roleplayer are contradictions. Maybe it is me not being a native speaker, so I do not understand the nuances. (and this is the reason of my ridiculous grammar and language after all... never mind...)

      @@RPGPundit Something different, you criticize WotC says don't dress like ... whatever, don't exagerate. Not out of reason. I am a DM for Kids for AGES. They do. Kids love dressing up and costumes. Gaming culture got a major emphasis on cosplay. Young people proudly brought stuff to the gaming table they associated with their character in the 90s, a helmet, twin scimitars, they even blackfaced when playing "their drow". This has become even more intense, for example by let's play shows. Sometimes the voice-actor-stars sit there in full cosplay. In early episodes I watched (I wanted to know what those kids are talking about tbh...) the characters where presented by their players in cosplay. Of course the young audiences will think this is the way Pen and Paper RPG is done. Even more so than back in ye olden days. Demographics - many players back then like today are in the age of junior high to college ... Teenagers to young 20s. I have a 15 year old kid, I DM for her friends and I DM for students... they do this. And they do the cosplay without thinking about any consequences or how people might feel. 23 years ago my spouse (then girlfriend) cosplayed a priestess of Lolth - including blackfacing... we should have known better...
      I consequently ignore modernist stuff like 5e and Radiant Citadel, Strixhaven etc. Those kids highly identify with that, just like they IDed with Mangas, Anime and Pokemon. 5e was opened for this particular group of people and they enjoy it because it offers even more possibilities. No need to mention those modules by WotC have much railroading in them and play like some kind of Icewind Dale or Point and Click Adventure. This can be helpful for beginners, DMs and players alike. Not everyone is born a DM and we all have to make mistakes and learn from them... If you feel like they are destroying your hobby: They don't ;) Nobody ever hinders you to continue with Oe, 1e, 2e, OSR... It seems you have the perspective of an almighty WotC-Overlord. This is not so. Smile, say goodbye, they do not have power over you. You are giving those people power. You make their words and advice matter. Just let them be. We have a saying in Germany: "Was schert es die Eiche, wenn sich die Wildsau an ihr schubbert" - the Oak doesn't care about the boar who is scratching his back... Frustration, anger, irritation will not be helpful :) I went through this a few times, and there will allways be folx who will be like "you must play the most recent edition" - no. Why should I care about them? Show those people a) you do the better products and make them buy them b) that you are a better person than them by giving the facts, not going ad hominem or other Schopenhauer-stuff. Ah, and of course - I do not always have to be right and have to have the last word. Many things are just not worth worrying about - and one cannot change them. Why waste energy and time. So :) Now you have the power to show what kind of a man you are (I wanna rock... ;) )
