Operational Faller Portal Container crane on model railroad

  • I always wanted a container crane on my model railroad. I have specially build a large container yard, with rail, road and ship connection. The center piece is the new Container Portal Container crane from Faller. Its operated by WiFi and the gripper can move in all 3 directions. The gripper is not yet functional, eg it cannot pick up a container, but this is foreseen for future upgrade. To avoid that the LiPO batteries run flat very fast, I separately supply power to the Led lights through the crane track. There is a 2-way Faller Car Road system build under the gantry, which is connected to my existing Faller Car System roads. But as the road at the left side of the terminal is not finished its not yet operational. There is also a harbor connection for river container ships. The dock wall is built, but the water still needs to be modelled. Many details are still under construction.

    Mooi werk! Containerterminals spreken mij aan niet alleen omdat het zo imposant is, maar ook omdat het zoveel betekent voor de handel en economie van landen.

      Dank je. Ja, je ziet steeds meer en meer container treinen en terminals op modelbanen. Probleem blijft natuurlijk dat zo een terminal veel plaats vergt op je modelbaan.

      This part took me almost 1,5 years to build. I take now a break of a few months to decide and get inspiration how to work out some details. Meanwhime I work on other parts of the layout.

    Nice 👍, I have one and fully assembled, may I know the part number for lighting? , also having problem with upper crane not moving due to gear not engaged coz of loose set screw on the main shaft!!!

    • @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad
      @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sulaiman, according to the instruction manual the LED lights are Faller 180653. If you wish to operate them with a 3 Volt LIPO pack, then you need to cut off the powersupply in the LED electronics and resolder the wiring directly to the LED. This is all described in the crane manual. You can ofcourse also buy other LEDS who run directly at the 3 Volt.
      Pity to read you upper crane is not moving anymore, its indeed a very sensitive connection and after assembly you can not access anymore. Its a great crane, but not very robust design.

    Very good work! I have two questions about it. First, about the gripper which you mention not functioning, is that a faller thing or You haven't made yours operational? And secondly, unfortunately manifacturers (ex. Roco) have the bad idea of making containers stick to the cars through a central hole+stick clicking mechanism, which makes it impossible from a crane to lift the container which is basically glued to the carriage. What kind of carriages do you utilise?

    • @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad
      @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Federico, you have 2 very good questions.
      First : Faller has not made a working gripper. The construction manual states that the builder must find himself a solution. This is a bit disappointing from Faller !!
      Second : On my railroad are container wagons from many manufacturers : B-Models, Van Biervliet, ESU, ACME, Roco, Intermodall, .... And every manufacture has a different way of fixing the container on the wagon. Most of my wagons use very small pins to lock the container. Its extremely difficult even by hand to position the container correct on these pins. So to create a working gripper you first have to standardize all your containers and install on all wagons the same standard locking system. And that locking solution must allow some positioning guidance, as the Faller crane is not very accurate. That's a huge job.

    • @federicon2534
      @federicon2534 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad thanks for the accurate tips! Indeed a bit disappointing from faller, and I myself have no idea of how to construct a gripper, although I though to go for a magnet to position both on the gripper and the containers. As for the standardisation, thanks again for the hint! Unfortunately, NEM guidances are very clear on the subject but not followed at all 😂 so the burden falls on us.

    • @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad
      @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@federicon2534 Indeed the more easy solution is a electro magnet in the gripper and in top of container a metal strip. Faller does have foreseen an auxillary contact in the gripper control printplate.

    • @federicon2534
      @federicon2534 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad which would then be programmed to switch on and off the magnet, I assume.

    • @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad
      @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@federicon2534 Correct, although I am not sure if that output signal itself can deliver the amps required for a magnet. So maybe a relay needs to be used to switch power.

    Absolutely incredible work.
    I have an intermodal fetish and no intermodal layout could be complete without a container crane and yours is exceptional.
    In my search for a manufactured ho container crane, the Faller seems to be the best available for a working model.
    My search brought me to your video and it certainly did not disappoint!
    The cost is quite an investment but while the price sting wears away quickly, a mediocre display would be forever disappointing.
    Cheers!
    One question please, can the motorized drive set, as delivered, be programed to remember the dead center of load locations, as in automatic return to track center, truck lanes ect,? Thanks, Roger

    • @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad
      @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger, I absolutely agree that a intermodal layout need a container crane. It was my dream for many years to build a serious container crane yard with harbor. To answer your question : The Faller control system runs on your pc and communicates through wifi with the crane. Unfortunately it is just movements - motor forward/backward, when you push the right control button with your pc mouse. No memory. There is an end of track sensor for the crane. But with hoisting you muct stop in time, otherwise the wires break off. To avoid the batteries to run empty too fast, I have made an alternate continuous power supply to the spot lights along the track. I agree its expensive model, but then you have an eyecatcher on your layout. Regards, Han Sanders

      @HaSaKo h0 Modelrailroad
      Thank you for the feedback Han.
      I havnt downloaded any of the specifications yet so I was a bit surprised to learn this is powered via on board battery.
      If you wouldn't mind another question, what is the voltage required to run it?
      Since it already has metal wheels, I'm curious as to why it isn't powered thru the track / wheels.
      I suppose it could be a relatively straight forward process to make such modifications if one were inclined although I imagine a lipo may hold out for the amount of time needed to load a full consist and that may be a bit tedious without a stepper motor to dial in the pick / drop zones but either way it is a very impressive scale model and you have done a particularly great job with yours.
      Congratulations and thanks again, Roger.

    • @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad
      @HaSaKoh0Modelrailroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger, the crane uses 2x 600mAh LIPO 3,6Volt batteries. Same as RC models. Actually I have added to 50% of all the brass wheels electrical contacts (by soldering a wire to the axle of the wheels), so the wheels can get power through the track, just like our locomotives do on our lay-out. I also added a power pack. However once the model was completed and reality showed the contact with the tracks to be unreliable. And as soon as voltage drops to low, even for a millisecond, you lose wifi connections and you can start all over with the initialization. The poor contact is due to the fact the crane is by far too light in weight. There is not enough pressure on the wheels and during horizontal motor-powered movement the crane frame "bends" and "tilts" during movement, as a result wheels hover over the track. If I have considered adding lead weights to the crane lower body, (even tested a few weights), but I am worried long term the crane will bend to much. So I use the wheel contacts in static mode for the spot lights, but running the crane I use the batteries. This whole battery issue and its regular charging is a "negative" of the crane. BUT overall it remains a fantastic model and eye catcher. If you buy the complete set, let me know and I can e-mail you a list of watch-out points during assembly. Happy New Year, Han
