I had a very high honor when President Carter came to Fairchild AFB in 1980 after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens to survey the damage from a helicopter flown by the 92D Air Rescue Squadron. I was assigned to the 92D Security Police Squadron as a Sergeant E-4 when I was selected by my commander to secure the SR-71 as it arrived for our open house and air show! Those were cancelled due to the eruption, then a couple of weeks later I was again selected by my commander to be part of the president's arrival at our base. Secret Service came to me asking me to draw two of my weapons because I was going to secure the control tower as Air Force One came in to land. After this that same gent placed me in the reception line to greet the president and I saluted him then shook his hand. I was not disarmed but instructed to place my M-16 rifle muzzle down as though it were raining!! Besides accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and taking care of my Mom before she passed, this was a huge honor!!! Rest in Peace President Carter you have earned it!!!
