  • The Sinking of The Wilhelm Gustloff occurred on January 30th, 1945 near the end of WW2. Approximately 10,000 German civilians and military personnel were evacuating Poland. The ship ultimately took thousands of lives with her in just under an hour. Making her the deadliest ship sinking in history.

Since bonds were invented 700 years ago, war is a business. War zone is a colliseum.
After 1929 crash, Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR) implemented New Deal to save people from extreme poverty and Glass Steagall law to prevent a new crash. Some rich industrialists and bankers did not like to have sacrificies to save Americans. So they found the historical villain and supported him. The business model was simple, lend money to his regime and use the money to hire the companies of the rich industrialist which would hire German citizens to build weapons. Then use these weapons to invade nation, loot them and repay using the loot and slave labor. The politician minion faced justice, but the rich sponsors of WWII colliseum who got richer, went unpunished.
Nowadays it is the same, but today we do not have war between nations, but war between elites. And none of the elites care about well being of you or me. Politicians are just puppets of their sponsors again. This is why I will reject any request to hate those who are hated by elites. It would be solved if politicians were brave, but many are just opportunists and sellouts, candidates appointed by rich people so we go and vote for them..

Because of the Cold War, people don't know about the Soviet hospital ship Armenia that was torpedoed by the Germans while evacuating Sevastopol with well over 5,000 people onboard. 8 survived. Cold War politics meant most of what happened on the Eastern Front isn't well know because they didn't want people to sympathise with the Communists.
Amazing how politics comes first. Same way the majority of refugees drowning in the English Channel goes unreported.

For some reason I've usually had an idea of this as a relatively rapid sinking - but it really wasn't. Many people who got trapped below would have been stuck, alive, for quite a considerable time before their part of the ship submerged; for many, it would not have been quick.

If uve based ur info on the dramatization of this one, and how many people describe it, one would come to the conclusion that it sank relatively quickly. Unfortunately, her designers made her a decently strong vessel to survive that long after 3 strikes of torpedoes, with the side issues of overcrowding and ice on the survival material being an issue

@@YourlocalNeighborhoodKid Do you also believe that happened on the Titanic, Lusitania and Empress of Ireland just because they were dramatic? Cause that’s not true. I guess I have to spell it out for you. They were trapped! They were either in total darkness climbing up unfamiliar staircases and walking down unfamiliar hallways, or they were just lost because of how big and how much of a maze the Titanic was. According to my math out of the 1,500 people that died on the Titanic, ~1,170 were trapped below decks during the final 20 minutes of the sinking.

I really appreciate your content. I know it's rather morbid, but large ships sinking has always fascinated me, even as a child, for a number of reasons. This one is especially dark to think about because of the immense loss of life, but it really needs more content made about it so that more people will learn it happened. It's outright bizarre that the single worst maritime loss of life in history is largely unknown and has been so little discussed or investigated.

I'm sorry, but it is *categorically* NOT a war crime because of the circumstances and the context therein:
The ship was NOT registered as a hospital ship (or anything of the sort) and as a matter of fact, it still had _anti-aircraft guns_ on board the vessel. The Russians had no way of knowing that the ship contained German refugees/civilians alongside German military personal; as far as they were concerned, it was a German ship with weaponry on board, maneuvering through territory in war time at night, up to god knows what (as far as the Russians were concerned). The captain of the ship also unwittingly drew a target on themselves by putting on the red and green lights in order to avoid collisions.
Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely tragic, but at he same time, it was just a horrid, unfortunate consequence of war.
If it had been marked or registered as a hospital ship (or similar), then yes it would absolutely be a war crime, but as is? No. Just because civilians or innocents happen to die, doesn't ALONE make an incident a war crime.

Nice video with nice compiled research, although the video's quite dark and at 2:26 I doubt that they knew how many nurses survived the blast (I'm assuming that it's more of a guess or from imperfect first hand accounts of those having to fight for their lives within that quickly sinking ship to have remembered such a small thing), it would be more believable that only three nurses survived the sinking.

@@marijamilicevic7212 most of the germans on board the ship were non-combatants. for the Goya and Steuben, many were wounded soldiers, but most people that were moved overall were civilians, mostly children and elderly. it was common practice that parents would put their kids with grandpa on a boat while they themself would attempt to walk or drive back to Germany which was much more dangerous.

Excellent! Over 3 dozen of my mother's "Aryan" side of her family were aboard the Gustloff. None survived. My Auschwitz Survivor mother grieved for my great-grandmother, who had done a lot to help the Jewish side of the family, but for the majority of the rest she had no tears (several had come to her home as soon as she & my grandmother received their deportation orders to Theresienstadt, literally pushing my mum & grandmother out of the way as they put tags on the furniture they wanted, soooo). ANYHOW... one correction - the 373 in the swimming pool were NOT nurses, they were Kriegsmarine Women's Auxiliaries - military personnel. The Gustloff was neither a hospital nor refugee ship - she was carrying U-Boat crews & other military personnel making her a legitimate target. The amazing thing is that Operation Hannibal managed to get over 2 million people out of East Prussia with only a tiny loss of life. That's of no comfort to the women & children who perished aboard the Gustloff, though.

You should do a video on Armenia where over 5000 Russian women and children evacuated (notice not Nazis and their followers) and then german pilots were flying over the people who ended up in the water shooting at them. That's what they did to trains with children or evacuated from cities lakes in Petersburg and they're also flying over children like little children like 5-6 years old right above them and shooting them.
