Back in The 80s I remember Prince was going to work on a Heavy Metal album as were Duran Duran. Neither of them did. Prince did a song that featured a lead guitar break from Prince. I was upset over the fact that critics were comparing him to Jimi Hendrix because I love Hendrix and can't stand Prince. John Taylor from Duran Duran put out a so album with a Hard Rock tinge. I get more upset when I see Paris Hilton wearing a New York Dolls t-shirt when I can't find one and I actually like the New York Dolls.

If you are wearing a metal shirt of a band or a hardrock shirt of a band then you better damn well know something about the band besides just that one song. If not then stop wearing it. It makes it hard for other metalheads, hardrock fans, etc to find others that like the same music and bands.

I made a video a year ago basically about this subject when Justin Bieber posted a picture of himself wearing a Metallica shirt. He actually does dig Metallica, maybe not to the level that you and I do, but he digs em. I've heard stories about people like Lady Gaga and Kesha both liking metal as well. It's basically one of those "Ok cool" things that really shouldn't impact anything.
It seems gate keeping is a problem for the metal community as well. Exclusion keeps music scenes small and limits the amount of money the artists can make. You can find snobs ruining things anywhere.
I'm primarily a musician, and as such this really irks me. I love metal, it's my life through and through. I also love music in general. I'd rather listen to Bieber's "Baby" than have silence. I think music listeners should not confine themselves to a genre, and branch out a bit too. I love Bruno Mars, Jackson 5, Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley all alongside metal. And for those musicians who have the "no popstar! TRUE METAL ONLY!!" mentality, they sicken me. As long as a musician is legit (which a lot more are legit outside of metal than you think), they deserve all of the respect that a legit metal musician deserves. Hell, even deadmau5 is a legit musician and should be treated as such. Keith Urban (who ironically did metal before he went to country) isn't worse of a musician because of the kind of music he writes, so why should anyone shit on his musicianship? I understand not liking the sound, but not respecting/recognizing it is just sinful. A musician should always support other musicians, and push all of us as a whole to improve ourselves.

I rolled my eyes and went into the pit, then after the gig I saw them talking to a girl saying they wanna take her behind the venue to smoke weed, I immeidetly ran over and pretended to know the girl (she was drunk), ask them what they wanted, they said "oh you wanna smoke weed with us? both of you come!" (then he grabbed my shoulder) i told them I heard them saying they dont even like Behemoth, they were here for the pussy and I shamed them loud enough for everyone to hear and walked the girl to the taxi. I havent seen them at a gig since.

I like a very wide range of music. From 50s Doo wop to rock to folk to swing jazz, to black metal. So if someone passes by me listening to Simon and Garfunkel, they may not ever entertain the thought that Behemoth could play immediately after them. Someone can like Justin Bieber and like metal also. IF I was a musician, I'd be tempted to make music in so many genres it would make some people's heads spin. So if say Justin did like metal and wanted to try his hand at making metal music, I say go for it. It could be good!
Sometimes it comes down to pure economics. I’m showing my age here, I once read an article with the pop group A-Ha. You would be amazed to know they were/are serious metal heads. But...and this is the point, they couldn’t make any money so they made cheesy pop songs, made sure the singer looked great and appealed to all the teeny boppers and bingo! Having ethics in music is very noble, but when your starving that isn’t going to pay the bills.
I don't think it really matters. We all have different tastes in music. I'm pretty sure there isn't a rule that you can't listen to two diametrically opposed genres. Even those who only buy metal band shirts and posters, you know it's because of the imagery and artwork. And what's the harm there? We all know the best album covers and t-shirt artwork comes from heavy metal. How can you not appreciate the artistic genius behind Cannibal Corpse album covers?

The specific problem I would have with Justin Bieber making a metal album is how much artistic value would it have? I don't think I'm unreasonable when I say he would make a trendy metal album and all of the sudden loads of edgy teenagers start going round saying 'oh I'm so metal bc I bought Justin Bieber's new album.' That's what I would dislike. I mean if he wants to make a legitimately metal album and he doesn't care about the sales as much as the artistic value then that's fine, but I would hate for metal to become 'trendy.' Usually a more underground fan base is a good filtration against stupidity.

I made a video a year ago basically about this subject when Justin Bieber posted a picture of himself wearing a Metallica shirt. He actually does dig Metallica, maybe not to the level that you and I do, but he digs em. I've heard stories about people like Lady Gaga and Kesha both liking metal as well. It's basically one of those "Ok cool" things that really shouldn't impact anything.

It seems gate keeping is a problem for the metal community as well. Exclusion keeps music scenes small and limits the amount of money the artists can make. You can find snobs ruining things anywhere.
I'm primarily a musician, and as such this really irks me. I love metal, it's my life through and through. I also love music in general. I'd rather listen to Bieber's "Baby" than have silence. I think music listeners should not confine themselves to a genre, and branch out a bit too. I love Bruno Mars, Jackson 5, Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley all alongside metal. And for those musicians who have the "no popstar! TRUE METAL ONLY!!" mentality, they sicken me. As long as a musician is legit (which a lot more are legit outside of metal than you think), they deserve all of the respect that a legit metal musician deserves. Hell, even deadmau5 is a legit musician and should be treated as such. Keith Urban (who ironically did metal before he went to country) isn't worse of a musician because of the kind of music he writes, so why should anyone shit on his musicianship? I understand not liking the sound, but not respecting/recognizing it is just sinful. A musician should always support other musicians, and push all of us as a whole to improve ourselves.

I like the band Dark Tranquillity. I have yet to get a shirt. I will next month when I see them live. I have all but two of there albums. My top album from them is The Gallaery. One of my top songs from them is Insanity's Crescendo.

My all in all serious comment is that if a person likes pop and metal at the same time, I start to asking them "Are you one of those, 'I'll Listen to anything' kind of people?" which is fine. One thing I was really pissed off with; I went to the Behemoth concert in Hong Kong and at the beginning when the support band was playing there was 2 white guys (Im only saying white cause in HK the crowd was mostly asian and im only singling them out cause they said they hate metal) talking at the bar and I heard them saying "dude metal chicks are great, they will always sleep with you!!!" I rolled my eyes and went into the pit, then after the gig I saw them talking to a girl saying they wanna take her behind the venue to smoke weed, I immeidetly ran over and pretended to know the girl (she was drunk), ask them what they wanted, they said "oh you wanna smoke weed with us? both of you come!" (then he grabbed my shoulder) i told them I heard them saying they dont even like Behemoth, they were here for the pussy and I shamed them loud enough for everyone to hear and walked the girl to the taxi. I havent seen them at a gig since.

Before she became known as Lady Gaga she hanged around people like us and went to shows. She played metal militia during one of her own shows reflecting her past. She didn't join a band or become a solo metal act simply because pop sold more, how can you blame her? She's been quoted saying 'People don't know the importance of heavy metal' and 'I'm not the next Madonna, I'm the next Iron Maiden' Her favorite metal song is Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath lol I mean, do I need to say more?

I like loads of music. From classical to pop. I do like metal though. I like a FEW pop songs but still. Pop sucks.
I like a very wide range of music. From 50s Doo wop to rock to folk to swing jazz, to black metal. So if someone passes by me listening to Simon and Garfunkel, they may not ever entertain the thought that Behemoth could play immediately after them.
Someone can like Justin Bieber and like metal also. IF I was a musician, I'd be tempted to make music in so many genres it would make some people's heads spin. So if say Justin did like metal and wanted to try his hand at making metal music, I say go for it. It could be good!
Sometimes it comes down to pure economics. I’m showing my age here, I once read an article with the pop group A-Ha. You would be amazed to know they were/are serious metal heads. But...and this is the point, they couldn’t make any money so they made cheesy pop songs, made sure the singer looked great and appealed to all the teeny boppers and bingo! Having ethics in music is very noble, but when your starving that isn’t going to pay the bills.

I don't think it really matters. We all have different tastes in music. I'm pretty sure there isn't a rule that you can't listen to two diametrically opposed genres. Even those who only buy metal band shirts and posters, you know it's because of the imagery and artwork. And what's the harm there? We all know the best album covers and t-shirt artwork comes from heavy metal. How can you not appreciate the artistic genius behind Cannibal Corpse album covers?
I personally hate when people (just like me) who aren´t not musicians start talking rubbish and try to convince other people about what is good or bad (to be or to listen), and most specially when they try to make others look like a fool just to gain some relevance. Face the facts: if you don´t play or sing a shit, then you are just like the 15 year old girl who says she does not "like" quantum mechanics becouse is too "cocky" for her. If you are and idiot you will remain idiot no matter what kind of t-shirt you wear. The specific problem I would have with Justin Bieber making a metal album is how much artistic value would it have? I don't think I'm unreasonable when I say he would make a trendy metal album and all of the sudden loads of edgy teenagers start going round saying 'oh I'm so metal bc I bought Justin Bieber's new album.' That's what I would dislike. I mean if he wants to make a legitimately metal album and he doesn't care about the sales as much as the artistic value then that's fine, but I would hate for metal to become 'trendy.' Usually a more underground fan base is a good filtration against stupidity.
