I saw an interview of a former pro football player who became a financial advisor specifically for former pro athletes. He said that advisors were made available to active pro athletes but they didn't use them and several years after retiring they were broke.

This is why really everyone goes broke. They don’t file taxes properly, they spend more than they earn, and they don’t invest. Everyone should invest. Myself & the wife have a few going. We need something to keep money coming in if, Heaven forbid, there are more lockdowns that force us out of work again 🙄

But all and all I was mostly self training since I was 12 and didn’t have my first sparring session until 19, I haven’t received that kind of punishment. TJ!!! This is so SO important to atheletes ESPECIALLY prize fighters... They get taxed at "bonus pay" or "incentive pay" rate percentages which is much higher than salary or hourly wage rates. As it pertains to fighters, they often have agents, reps, a team, etc that all get a piece of the pie (operating costs) before they get their personal income note. Its honestly not fair because the industry is set up to use the fighter as a performing asset, but as a prize fighter, you NEED to invest in financial legal counsel (contracts specifically) preferably a firm not affiliated with your League, Promoters or sponsors. Ultimately You need to focus on training and fighting and let someone legally obligated to work in YOUR best interest to handle the money... Boxing is a hard way to make a living, but this info spans all professional athletic or venue appearance paid professions...

tony. not every athlete has the business mind. obviously you got the business mind, beside boxing. you made a risky move by investing in box n burn, but you lower that risk with your boxing knowledge- you know what you invested in. also you made a smart move to adapt to a needs of a fitness industry. flexibility and fast adaptation is a characteristic of a good businessman.
my advice to the professional boxers would be to find a financial professional to who they trust, to make a low risk investment with the majority of their earning. To spend about 20 % of the earning, and to invest 80% of their earning in low risk investments like real estates, or portfolio of bonds.

If every and any elite level athlete of any discipline were to just put away 25% of every paycheck or "purse", they wouldn't have to worry about retirement. Not everyone can be a Money Mayweather where they are actively boxing and overlooking their business, because business ventures or investments can possibly take a toll on your performance and be a distraction, so just saving a quarter of your earnings to use when retired for business ventures can make a difference from living broke or living comfortably.

Tony... so if am 25 y/old in April and havent had an ammy fight nor pro - only one semi pro draw - am i being late to the party if i look at a robust pro career/championship, and contrary to the appearances it is the only goal i really actually have?

I really enjoy your content as always Tony, but call my cynical but its the area where you are, you're half way there. I'm sure you had the foresight to see that the business would get top potential in the states. I can't see it happening in blighty to the same extent. Regardless keep up the good work !
