Why not push your towers farther out? You can place them all the way to the stone and iron ore. This way you can absorb some of the attacks on Frederick, so he doesn't get killed, and have more flexibility and space for economy. Also your archers get in range of the enemies rally points, and attack while they are just standing there. Two towers of archers + crossbowmen and 5-6 fire ballistas behind are plenty for defense
