CGI was terrible, acting was terrible but it is and probably will be the most faithful adaptation from book to film we will get.

Then, in 1988, the martians (now evolved or something) re-attempted to start up the invasion again and re-acquired their ships. We blew them up and for a while a battle in secret happened. That was like two... maybe three years. Then nothing. Almost feels like years ago, but the invasion of 2005 wasn’t that long ago. And I’m surprised by that.

Indeed, it was chilling! I always adored Spielberg's War of the Worlds and I'd much rather stick with that as a unique adaptation of one of my favourite novels.

I'm glad that they're using the original time period! You don't see that often, and I enjoy the juxtaposition of a historical setting with a modern sci-fi aesthetic. It makes the alien force seem all the more like a radical intrusion into a humbler world.

This one takes place in the Edwardian era, early 20th century. For whatever reasons. There will be minor changes to the story too, creative and narrative liberties.

There is far greater accessibility to Gatlings and WW1 era uniforms than the older uniforms and maxims. Kind of shows how quickly technology and military culture advanced in that very short period just prior to WW1.

I'm so glad they kept it to a period setting. I always thought the story loses something when transplanted to modern day, and besides we've had so many "alien invasion" films set in modern day already.
Yeah, I remember the War in The Worlds in 1950’s had to add force field once they realize that modern artilleries, tanks, and even bazookas would finish the tri-pods. Plus Tom Cruise and annoying kids too. And idiotic things like charging straight to the enemy to look heroic but actually idiotic.
I suspect they'll have modern day dialogue and sensibilities, but it's good to see it in the correct country at the correct time period. Can't have everything I suppose.

For anyone confused as to the time setting, the Edwardian Period is correct, not the end of the Nineteenth Century. Wells makes it quite clear in the final sentence of the opening paragraph that the events take place in the early years of the Twentieth Centuty i.e.: the Edwardian Period. Looking forward to this...! :)
I have seen this show which is now only 2 episodes (3 were promised) it was good but they definitely could have made this into a 6 or 8 episode series. Having read the book many times when I was younger and listened avidly to Jeff Wayne's album I really feel that so much more could have been done with show!

The ships were not made to cope with heat rays. Many of them were made with steel or only iron. Modern ships could be made with ceramic cladding. Perhaps similar to the ceramic tiles on the space shuttle.
@@GigaPlaya I was referring to the fact that the Thunderchild took down some walkers and War of the Worlds is set during the late Victoria Era. Meaning there would have been more than one ship with effective cannon :) I understand that the Ships would have still been beaten.

Scarey thing, I was working in Woking, was some leisure center next to a multi storey car park, exited the car park on foot and a silver Martian fighting machine was outside and there was people running past it in a panic looking at the sky, I was like OMG, whats this, i was getting pretty scared myself seeing people walking and running past this martian fighting machine whilst looking at the sky, asked this woman what was going on and she said, terrorists are blowing planes out of the sky... it was 9 / 11 and the first plane had just crashed into the WTC but no one knew the full story at that moment, just that terrorists were blowing up planes. was very surreal and frightening.
It's still set around London, but all shot around Liverpool. The first few seconds is William Brown Street in Liverpool, and several other clips in the trailer are shot nearby.
Very excited for this. If I'm not mistaken, this is supposed to be one of the most accurate adaptations of the original 1898 novel that's ever been made. Most of the previous films/tv shows/radio programs usually took place in a more modern era, and usually in America, with many adapting just the famous 1938 radio drama.

Something these get right, however, is that they look flat-packed and hand made, as they are in the book. In the book, the Martians construct them from kits after they land and these certainly fit that.

Timothy Hines' 3 hour film version is painfully the most faithful adaption, but it suffers in nearly every department of its production.

Finally, FINALLY, a time-period-appropriate adaptation! (Nearly every other adaptation updates it to present-day America, whatever that present might be. The only versions I know of that set it in its original Victorian-Edwardian time period were an obscure 2005 version released in the wake of the Spielberg version, and the rock opera.) Also, nice touch naming the main characters George (after Herbert George Wells) and Amy (after Wells' second wife).
This looks like BBC have finally decided to return to making something truly authentic and genuinely good. I hope the trailer isn't deceiving. Because at this point, I can't wait to see the entire thing!

FINALLY a War of the Worlds a) set in the right place at the right(ish) time and b) where the heat ray is invisible! Also, is that Black Smoke I see? It ends up being their primary weapon in the book but it has never shown up in a filmed adaptation.
I'm going to have to be "that guy" and say, I'm not overly enthused about the tripod design, that was something Spielberg's film did well. Other than that I agree with the other comments mentioning its period UK setting.
The first episode was good, well shot, great acting. My only gripe is the 'other' storyline they're running, the one that isn't in the novel. Found it very jarring. Plus it also removed the tension from the main storyline (trying not to give away spoilers!). Also very surprised that Canada and New Zealand are getting it before the UK!

i remember having to read the book in english class, and if there one thing i remember from it, it was the river filled with bodies of those culled by the martians. i hope they don't skip out on that, cuz thats honestly one of the most memorable parts of the story (in my opinion).

Already seen the first episode. It's spectacular cant wait for the rest of the world to see it! Don't worry won't dish out any spoilers but boy oh boy everyone is in for a treat! All that needs to be done is an open world video game of The War of the Worlds. One it would get tons more fans I reckon due to how popular video gaming is these days and two. And it'd rake in the viewers for this series as well. I know this version is modern but it makes all the other adaptions of War of the Worlds look rubbish. Then again it has kept to the story and lore of the original War of the Worlds so no wonder. Nevertheless. A game needs to be made and I will definitely be one of the first sharing videos on my TH-cam Channel if there ever is one done.

I have not seen this yet, but I'm thankful that it appears to be set in a proper time period and setting that relates to the book unlike the tom cruise adaptation. The ships were not made to cope with heat rays. Many of them were made with steel or only iron. Modern ships could be made with ceramic cladding. Perhaps similar to the ceramic tiles on the space shuttle.
@@GigaPlaya I was referring to the fact that the Thunderchild took down some walkers and War of the Worlds is set during the late Victoria Era. Meaning there would have been more than one ship with effective cannon :) I understand that the Ships would have still been beaten.

I live in Woking where this is based in the book, I'm well excited for this!
I was born in Horsell, right by the common where they landed in the book.
Apparently Wells took great satisfaction in cycling around Woking and imagining it being blown to smithereens. :) I'll have to make a pilgrimage one day.
Scarey thing, I was working in Woking, was some leisure center next to a multi storey car park, exited the car park on foot and a silver Martian fighting machine was outside and there was people running past it in a panic looking at the sky, I was like OMG, whats this, i was getting pretty scared myself seeing people walking and running past this martian fighting machine whilst looking at the sky, asked this woman what was going on and she said, terrorists are blowing planes out of the sky... it was 9 / 11 and the first plane had just crashed into the WTC but no one knew the full story at that moment, just that terrorists were blowing up planes. was very surreal and frightening.
One day i want to recreate the Narrators journey from The War of the Worlds.
It's still set around London, but all shot around Liverpool. The first few seconds is William Brown Street in Liverpool, and several other clips in the trailer are shot nearby.
Very excited for this. If I'm not mistaken, this is supposed to be one of the most accurate adaptations of the original 1898 novel that's ever been made. Most of the previous films/tv shows/radio programs usually took place in a more modern era, and usually in America, with many adapting just the famous 1938 radio drama.
Except that the tripods are completely wrong.
@@mjdegrey4843 to be fair, they kinda had to do something different to the Spielberg film - which were quite accurate to the described design.
Something these get right, however, is that they look flat-packed and hand made, as they are in the book. In the book, the Martians construct them from kits after they land and these certainly fit that.
Geoff waynes musical adaptation of WOTW is the most accurate … and same with the live shows … an incredible musical and visual experience
@@rokker101 His musical takes liberties too. Quite a few in characters and narrative. No brother or the Elphinstones, and changes the lone curate with the parson and a wife. Timothy Hines' 3 hour film version is painfully the most faithful adaption, but it suffers in nearly every department of its production.

Finally, FINALLY, a time-period-appropriate adaptation! (Nearly every other adaptation updates it to present-day America, whatever that present might be. The only versions I know of that set it in its original Victorian-Edwardian time period were an obscure 2005 version released in the wake of the Spielberg version, and the rock opera.) Also, nice touch naming the main characters George (after Herbert George Wells) and Amy (after Wells' second wife).
This looks like BBC have finally decided to return to making something truly authentic and genuinely good. I hope the trailer isn't deceiving.
Because at this point, I can't wait to see the entire thing!

I was about three years old when I saw Spielberg’s version and yet I remember my nightmares quite clearly.
FINALLY a War of the Worlds a) set in the right place at the right(ish) time and b) where the heat ray is invisible!
Also, is that Black Smoke I see? It ends up being their primary weapon in the book but it has never shown up in a filmed adaptation.
Set 10 years on from the book, due to the bbc budget i.e they had more costumes and equipment from the later period.

I'm going to have to be "that guy" and say, I'm not overly enthused about the tripod design, that was something Spielberg's film did well. Other than that I agree with the other comments mentioning its period UK setting.

Oh dear a 1870s vintage Gatling Gun being used in the early 1900s, things must be going badly against the Martians.
A lot of weapons developed in the late 1800 ..were used in WW1 .. the main French machine gun in ww1 was developed in it's earliest form around 1890
The first episode was good, well shot, great acting. My only gripe is the 'other' storyline they're running, the one that isn't in the novel. Found it very jarring. Plus it also removed the tension from the main storyline (trying not to give away spoilers!). Also very surprised that Canada and New Zealand are getting it before the UK!
They better have the scene of the Thunderchild taking on the Tripods

i remember having to read the book in english class, and if there one thing i remember from it, it was the river filled with bodies of those culled by the martians. i hope they don't skip out on that, cuz thats honestly one of the most memorable parts of the story (in my opinion).
Some advice, in short: do not presume about your English lessons by writing with so many spelling mistakes, because you will make your teacher look really bad!

Already seen the first episode. It's spectacular cant wait for the rest of the world to see it! Don't worry won't dish out any spoilers but boy oh boy everyone is in for a treat! All that needs to be done is an open world video game of The War of the Worlds. One it would get tons more fans I reckon due to how popular video gaming is these days and two. And it'd rake in the viewers for this series as well. I know this version is modern but it makes all the other adaptions of War of the Worlds look rubbish. Then again it has kept to the story and lore of the original War of the Worlds so no wonder. Nevertheless. A game needs to be made and I will definitely be one of the first sharing videos on my TH-cam Channel if there ever is one done.

I have not seen this yet, but I'm thankful that it appears to be set in a proper time period and setting that relates to the book unlike the tom cruise adaptation. Im also aware that there were even older adaptations such as the 50's paramount one and the sequel, but I've never seen those ones so there's not much I can say about those. Looks interesting.

It was that unnecessary floating sphere thing that made me think of Doctor Who than a classic British novel! Was half expecting it to open up and spew forth hundreds of daleks!
