"Repair Shop" Destroys Gaming Laptop - Can I Fix it? A viewer sent this laptop to me after he took it to a "repair shop" who "tried" to fix it but actually messed it up worse and still charged him for their "work". This kind of thing really drives me nuts so of course I had to try repairing the laptop to see if I could get it working again.

I sometimes wonder if the “repair shop” that failed to fix these devices is really the unknowledgeable owner attempting a DIY repair, but is too afraid to admit that they caused the damage. I mean you simply can’t stay in business as a repair shop doing things like what was done to this laptop....
350 dollars for a 1500 dollar laptop😂😂 ebay prices in america are pretty nuts. In Europe for broken things they still ask huge prices.

Usually things here go for a lot too but sometimes you can still get a good deal.
It's definitely not current gen Asus G15, sticker says GTX, probably 1660ti.

I owned this exact laptop.
Asus ROG Strix GL531G, this is the low-mid tier version, paid $1,019.99 new when it came out in 2019. So ya not worth $1500, because of the GPU market crash it still holds value because of its GPU, so you could theoretically sell it for $800-$900.
BTW worst laptop I've ever owned, kept overheating, didn't like sleep mode since it would crash, store I bought it from literarily closed down 2 weeks after I bought it, had to go through hell for Asus to give me a refund instead of a replacement.

I’m calling foul play. I think the person’s been watching too many of your videos and decided to try their own repair. When things didn’t go as planned, they put the blame on some “computer shop” and sent it your way lol. BTW, magnificent repair as always 👍

Considering they charge a bomb just to reseat a connector that might have come loose but customers think they "skillfully" resurrected a dead laptop and would pay up to avoid spending for a new laptop.
Mostly breaks down to these people who take advantage of people who don't know better. You have an enormous amount of the population assume that since they have a "store" (a space they rent out), that they must be legitimate.
You also have the scummy tactics people will use to hide their reputation. There's a man who lives in my area that owns a "computer repair business", but has changed business names and locations about 6 times in the past 10 years. Once he starts getting bad reviews he just moves onto a new area and starts a new business. If we're being honest here he doesn't really lose much, since even at the high end all the licenses and such costs less than $200; then just moves all his existing stuff into a new location under a new name.
He's simply known for preying on those who only know they bought it at walmart 3 years ago.
i had the exact same experince with the ROG gaming laptops there power ports are a common failure point went in for one that was starting to fail i got it back and it wont even power on
This actually gave me a lot of insight into what I should do when I do need to "refurbish" my laptop. Not to mention HOW COULD THEY MELT THE CASE AND SAY "OK HERE YOU GO, WE COULDN'T FIX IT"
That repair shop should be ashamed of themselves. We all screw up occasionally but we're supposed to put it right. Great job Steve, glad you got this one working again 👏

@@Tronicsfix yeah I've seen it a few times on Nintendo switches too, people reflowing the WiFi ic and M92T36 without removing it from the housing. It takes a special kind of stupid to do stuff like that lol

A repair shop did this to his pc, i would be somewhat sceptical to that story.
The repair shop that botched that job owes the person a new laptop in my opinion. But major kuddos to you for fixing it. Always great work here. Keep it up!
Great job on that one! It's so damn satisfying to save those devices deemed ready for landfill. Gives them back their soul and purpose on this planet. Thank you for doing that and for inspiring other people through your documentation of it.
I’d trust Steve to repair my electronics, this is quality work you’ve done, I’m going to try to work at a phone repair shop when I’m older. I did a temporary iTunes error 9 fix on my iPhone 6 so it would restore, and I did it without soldering, just put something between the display and the CPU

I can't believe how much flux was left on that board and then given back to the customer?! Surely that in itself would have caused issues further down the line?

A little bit of good quality no clean flux left on the board would unlikely cause any issues down the line, but with the amount of the unknown flux on that board I would expect it to destroy it over time.
@@jimjiggles1474 Even cheap no clean flux will not cause any issues (think about when flux gets under BGAs). Of course this is still a bad sign as it indicates that they did not clean enough to perform a proper inspection after the repair.

these type of repairshops are what makes me anxious to even get my technologies fixed

I am always fascinating with your videos. I fix my electronic myself as a hobby. I never replaced a monitor to my MacBook before. I watch a random TH-cam video (How to video) and I replaced the broken one with a new one with no problem. Anyway, your videos are calm and relaxing. Keep them coming!!!

6:45 Should you solder the power connector leads on the top side of the board here? The pins are soldered on the bottom side and likely connect to the power plane on the top side of the board via the through hole plating. But the manufacturer probably intended for those pins to be soldered completely through, so they directly contact both the top and bottom sides of the board.

Welp, inspired by you, earlier this week, I attempted my first soldering project in a long while, outside of my comfort zone: Replacing the supercapacitors on my 5 year old dashcam. I failed. Some solder got into the through-holes and I couldn't get it out and ended up wrecking the pads. I'm really glad I tried though. With that practice under my belt, I'm sure I'll do better the next time I try working on something on that scale.
I practice soldering skills on trashed devices, just pick some up for free at your local recycling facility. It is much much harder than it looks in real life, as you already experienced.
you need to get the name of this repair shop and post it so people dont get their stuff messed up by them, Great job steve.

Watched this bc I have my own ROG Strix, and instantly recognized the laptop just from the exaust and board layout on the thumbnail and was curious. Bizzare that this happens, but Major Kudos on the recovery.
No I literally refuse to believe that there is a SHOP out there, that does this shoddy work. They legit have to be unskilled or just plain malicious to do that 💩 of a soldering job. Actually unbelievable.
I know a guy who runs a shop who stated he never uses thermal paste. It's a good thing I do my own builds and repairs because after hearing that he wouldn't be getting my business.

Why would the repair shop bother put thermal paste on a no fix laptop? The rogue solder blob was the only main fault I could see.

The tone of your voice and genuine enthusiasm from having successfully gotten the computer to boot carrying over to explaining how we will probably also really enjoy the video of you repairing your laptop after it had been peed on by your wife's cats is the kind of left-field totally unexpected character arc most people would usually have to wait a whole week for on primetime cable.

I've had customers tell me that another shop did things like this but honestly, I think most of the time it was the customer who attempted the repair themselves.
I would also change thermal paste on memory dies. Anyway very good video, it's nice to see people doing great job. Thumb up 👍

I sent my laptop to get repaired, they told me it’s not worth getting the WiFi areal fixed because it’s a lot of work, and they didn’t even fix the fan I told them isn’t working. Never going to that repair shop again.
The wifi is usually a plug in component that said they could have just sold you a small usb wifi unit for few pounds/dollars if it was unrecoverable.
@@Arachnoid_of_the_underverse nah, they said it was “too much work” because you have to take the screen out to swap the areal. They must not have been confident enough. The chip/component itself is fine (I think) just the snap on connectors. The fan needs a new thing on the motherboard because of a bent pin.
He mentioned at the beginning that the device shutdown when it got heat up. It’s working now but it doesn’t mean that he fixes the problem yet.
3/4 of experiences that I had with repair shops were god awful. The prices they charge were unfair and their work was abysmal. The first 3 repair were big shops with high reviews and what not and I was disappointed. The one I had a good experience with was a small repair shop which was suggested by a friend. The price was fair and they did a great job.
3:55 - absolutely... there are so many "repair shops" in my area who are / have employees like that. They will worsen the situation and have the audacity to charge even without fixing the items. I do troubleshooting myself and it's really embarrassing to charge costumers when I don't fix their item/s.
Hey Steve, great video, love to see electronics saved from landfills. Can you make some updated versions of your ps4 and dualshock 4 disassembly and reassembly videos with your current higher quality filming methods like in this video? I've followed your videos to open my ps4, ps5 and their controllers to clean them and am thankful for them but the old ones sometimes don't show some of the tricky parts in as much details as you currently are able to. i especially struggled with my psu cable on my original ps4 and i still struggle putting my ds4's touchpad ribbon back through the hole in the top of the board to reassemble it when i need to open them up. thanks for helping me fix my stuff :)

Amazing repair job. I'm quite astonished to see a "repair shop" that tried to do the soldering not only incorrectly, but also without removing the board from the laptop itself. Out of curiosity, which thermal paste did you use? Looks like arctic silver.
Those wonky capacitors would have driven me nuts so glad you fixed them

Great work! I have a different ROG laptop that I did some work on - cleaning the fans, heatsink fins and re thermal pasting which reduced temps by a bunch! Thanks to channels like this I felt confident to give it a go. Awesome work.
I had dell break my laptop from them once and took 3 months to get a new one. Sometimes repair people just dont care what they are doing

Word of advice. If your electronics is broken, NEVER give it to a repair shop, but to Steve instead.
Yeah most repair shops are trash and either do a shoddy job or use crap parts for the repair. a few years ago I used to have an iPhone 5s and when the screen broke after 3 years I gave it to a repair shop to fix which they did and it looked fine but it looked a little cheaper too and also broke within 6 months AND it was from a LIGHTER fall as in there was less impact and it still broke whereas the original drop was from a higher place but it was still working at least even though it was cracked so i kept it till I accidentally dropped it in to my toilet because I had it in my pants pocket and it was sticking out of my pants a little and as soon as I got up and started to pull my pants up it fell out in to the toilet and got water damaged but after that I just bought an android phone and have NEVER wanted to use an iPhone ever since because I started finding out cool things I could do on an android phone that I couldn't do on my iPhone
That shows the difference between a terrible repair shop and you. You do it right the first time and customers will keep coming back to you. You do great honest work and do not try to cheat people by doing shoddy work by making it look like you tried to repair something and not repair the product that a customer drops off. There are some things you can't fix but that is understandable but you do give it a good try.

According to what you said at the beginning of the video, the owner said that when it warmed up it would stop charging. I saw that you corrected issues that were apparently created by the repair shop. But did you test this unit to see if it stopped charging after it warmed up or not? If you didn't, then you didn't address the issue that the owner had.
I would be more inclined to believe the charging port would have been the issue pervious one would have been damaged and moving the laptop while plugged in would of shorted the charger out making it go in to protection mode.
I fixed computers for 8 years and I thought there were times I didn't do the best job soldering (I had no formal training from bosses) My soldering was functional at first and improved as time went on but this is actually shameful! The damage to the laptop would have me mortified and I wouldn't even let this pass to software checks with the poor soldering done and the battery connection being damaged the way it was.
Boy this was a bad repair job fantastically fixed in the video by a proper tech! Amazing Job!
Ironically before the repair shop destroyed the laptop putting the perfect amount of thermal paste on it probably would have fixed the issue.

I'm a guy who works on computers in my town and a friend of mine came to me with his old gaming laptop that just stopped charging and his Dell gaming laptop that a repair shop messed up. I was wanting to know whether or not you wanted to make a video on them or not. If you can't fix them it's whatever because he's already given them to me and bought another one. I did some work on the first one and didn't really get anything done but the second one I haven't done really anything to.

A good laptop that just stopped to work because some faulty capacitor because a bad manufacturer project. I studied the common defects a lot of the model, common suspicious causes and components and common solutions and managed to nail down the problem and do some workaround with another capacitor (well it's not great, it's ugly) but it worked flawlessly!
So I had no extra cost to do the extra-expensive and not-easily-acessible tech support repair far away and hadn't to throw such a beautiful machine in the trash bin. Not even some guys around the city managed such a feat, I feel so proud of myself.
These times I remember that if we had good repairers like you around, I would trust them wholeheartedly, instead I got some loose parts and lost screws, and not the ideal amount of thermal paste =/

Lovely PCB work there, was nice seeing someone give a good device the repair it needed.
Nice fix but I would have also repasted the gddr memory since those can heat up quite a bit.
I don't own a repair shop but I do some minor repairs but I can assure that every work I do must be clean and undamaged if I am not able to fix it out... Some time the customer get confused wether the device was opened for repair or not... But These unfinished and nasty works gives my goosebumps...
