I don't annotate my books, but whenever I read a book that I own I always write my thoughts on the book on a blank page at the back of the book. Here I would say what my favorite scene was, how I felt about the romance or friendship, my general thought on the book and plot and my rating. Its not that detailed but I like looking back at books I read years ago and see what I thought.

Do I annotate my books? No.
Do I love watching why/exactly how others annotate theirs? Yes.
I like the idea of color-coded pens! One reason I don't annotate is that I feel like it would take me out of the story if I took too long to tab.

I LOVE this video for many reasons. One, because I love annotating my books and seeing how others do it and two, because you've got CC on it. My mom is HOH and so she doesn't usually watch a lot of youtube videos but we were just talking about annotating books the other day and so I showed her this video with the captions and she was so happy :) So thanks from both me and my mama :)

Awww no problem! I know that it’s important to caption so I’ve been working towards making sure all captions are done before the video is uploaded. I’m so happy she enjoyed it.

I was trained from an early age that it's a no-no to write or highlight in any book, but I am thinking of using notebooks, because I am a sucker for those since I still like to write my stories by hand first, to write my reviews instead of going off my memory for Goodreads.
I love that everyone has their own style and how it develops and evolves. My opinion, it's your book do what you want to get a better experience out of it.
Also, the blanket you were using is the same one my youngest has. He's gotten too tall, but he likes to cover up his blue lion Lincoln with it. 😊😀

LOL, I never annotate my books 'cause, usually, once I'm done reading them I donate them to either a Library, a used book store, or I give them away to friends. However, I totally enjoyed this video since I'm a scrap-booker and a journaler so between the colored pens, highlighters, and sticky-notes, I definitely appreciate your attention to detail(s)!!!

I just recently started annotating. I don't write but I highlight the crap out of the book and I realized how much more I dive into the book and the story that way. I love it.

  • @Amanda.aka.Megan.Shines

I started Twilight and bought a cheap used copy to annotate a couple weeks ago and I do very similarly to your process. Margin notes, color code with midliners and matching sticky tabs (the 5 color version of the ones you use) and legend in the beginning. I love the idea of matching pens as well to speed up the process while reading, and then going back after to highlight and tab after. And I completely agree that tearing into a book in that way is a lot of fun, and also very "aesthetic." It's my first time going all-in on annotating and its so much fun!

I love watching how other people annotate. Personally I am not a big annotator, but I WANT TO BE. However, nothing has really stuck so I actually have a writing pad next to me and write reading notes. Alas, I may never be able to have my own annotating system, but I can watch others and imagine. Great video!

Lol, I use the same tabs and pens! They’re so handy! I like to read slowly, so tabbing and writing things slowing me down doesn’t bother me much, but I totally understand how you use the pens to just underline and tab later, that’s a good trick. I’ve been journaling, my annotations, since I noticed that I have a lot of of thoughts about what I’m reading, so I tab the book, and do an outline in pencil, and then in the journal, I write the quote or the part that made me I guess “react” if that’s the right term, and then I write my thoughts. Then I use post it’s to kind of write down my thoughts after every chapter (every 2-3 if the chapters are short) 😅 I enjoy watching different kinds of annotation videos, they’re all so different, and so unique to each person, and I haven’t tried to annotate an audiobook yet, but that’s going to be a beautiful challenge. Thank you!

  • @trinadubya3406

Ooo, thank you for this video! I liked seeing how your system has evolved over the years. It makes perfect sense for your colors to mean different things from book to book; it seems like it'd be pretty difficult to maintain the same system unless the reader only reads one type of fiction. It might be a waste to have a "pink for romance" tab when it's a horror story or thriller.
My first English professor at college said we learn less by highlighting and more by taking notes, so that's what I do when I want to annotate. That keeps things consistent across formats -- audiobooks, ebooks, library books, and my own paper books -- when everything goes in a single dot-grid notebook.

  • @LorisBookTrials

I love annotating my books. I am always changing my system for tabbing. The only colors that don't change are, green for quotes, orange for happy Emotions, yellow for angry emotions, and purple is almost always magic system. And of course pink is for romance and friendships. I have 10 different color tabs right now but I am hoping to find less colors. 10 is just kind of to much, I would love to have 7 or 8 at the most. And change what certain colors mean.
I love the way you annotate, very interesting system. Hope you have a great day as well as your little girl.

  • @randim7144

I enjoyed this! Because 95% of the books I buy and read end up in my classroom library, I tend to only annotate books I’m planning on teaching, so the last few books I’ve annotated are Beartown, Just Mercy, and Anger is a Gift. However, my method is pretty boring; I tend to just use pencil. I like your color-coding method, and I may have to adopt something similar to make it easier for me break down the different kinds of annotations I make, which would make it easier to discuss. Thank you for sharing! ❤️

I love the idea of annotating books but I mainly read audiobooks. I used to be really diligent about writing quotes in a separate notebook but I've gotten out of the habit. I also don't typically physically annotate because I usually use the library for my physical books. Anywho, im really loving your videos. I love learning about other folks reading process!
Edit: also im thinking about how I LOVE to buy someone's heavily annotated book from a thrift store or something. It's like having a reading buddy right there with you throughout the book. Just some encouragement for the people nervous to write in their books 😁

Thank you for this wonderful video. I resonate a lot with how you annotate, and that it is different for each book.
One thing for me is that I'm super careful about highlighters as they can bleed through to the next page, depending on the paper quality. So underlining is definitely my usual go to instead of highlighters.

Very interesting! You are so dedicated and organized! I usually only annotate with tabs looking for particular phrases or passages that speak to me. I also have found that some books that moved me years ago no longer appeal to me so I don’t want to write in them so I can find a new home for them eventually.

  • @Cookiesy
    @Cookiesy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Totally agree that you can't annotate until you've started reading and noticing things. I change what colours mean specifically because I read multiple different genre's and they just don't really work having the same colours for the same things across the board. Plus I'm a mood reader, I have books that I've focussed on writing for and books that literally just have tabs all over the place and scribbles saying "YAS!" or "WTF!" lol. Definitely a preference thing though :)

This is so pleasing! I have 2 types of books - those I'm not willing to write in (my nice hardcovers that I've collected - most of them are older) and those I am willing to write in (any books that I had for a class, or paperbacks. I don't do nearly as detailed annotations as you do, but sometimes word definitions or translations if I have to look something up, to save myself the time the next time I read it (I reread almost every book that I keep at some point). I think I'd retain a lot more if I were as detailed as you, but I'm an impatient reader. That's why I have to reread. :) Thank you so much for sharing your method. Oh, I noticed someone asked if you would lend an annotated book. On that topic, I recently purchased a couple of used books from different sources that came with tabs still in place. I was kind of excited because I wanted to see what the previous owner had noted. However, neither book had anything to indicate what the tabs were for, and there were so many that I couldn't figure out what was being noted. Hahaha!

Inkjoy pens are so amazing!! Love how they write!
I highlight, write in, and tab all while reading and yes it does take time lol but I don’t color code like pink means one thing and yellow means another. I just match the tabs to the cover. So if I’m reading a book with a pink cover, I’ll use pink tabs, pink pen, and pink highlighter lol
I could never remember what each color tab was supposed to mean 🤣

Finally someone else who chooses categories for every book! I do this as well. But I don’t use sticky tabs, so I can have as many categories as I like. And I change my colours for any categories that overlap between books. Like the love category is used all the time, but it might be pink in one book and yellow in another.

Up to that point in my leisure reading, I had never annotated. It ended up being a book that I loved. Right now, I am reading another book that I am totally loving. I wish it wasn't a library copy because I am feeling that same compulsion to annotate!.

Thanks for sharing. I never learned how to annotate, except (oddly) my bible when I was in middle school. I'm reading an Unkindness of Ghosts and the main character is just resonating with me so much so I'm using tabs to annotate. I actually ran out of Blue which was the color I was using for sections about Aster that made me feel seen and so now I feel like I have to stop until I get more tabs delivered on Thursday. Thanks for sharing the links to the supplies you use. I like the large pack of tabs that sounds excellent. I'm not sure if/when I'll feel more comfortable writing in my books. I think I just have a hard time going back and I frequently don't want to stop to write. I should give it a try sometime though.

I love seeing how other people annotate their books and seeing the evolution of your approach to it was really cool! I also really like the idea of using the first couple of chapters to figure out what your system is for that particular book. I have started to reread my favourite books and have been tentatively tabbing them but it is so new to me so I am still working things out. In my recent reread I was frustrated by my lack of colours! I don't highlight yet though, although sometimes I write in pencil in the margins. Loved the examples you chose as well so we could see how your annotating system has developed over time ^.^

This is fascinating. I'm curious to see how other people enjoy their reading.
I'm a casual tabber. In other words, your very first system where I would just point out sentences or parragraphs that stood out to me.
I often find myself highlighting and annotating more in e-books than physical copies. 🤷🏽‍♀️

This is making me want to get back to really annotating books. I used to really love it while taking lit classes but fell out of it with my own books but it helps so much in getting into the meat of a novel.

I love this!!! Thank you! You're helping me at least figure out how I want to annotate in the future... because I never really know where or how to start and I would love to fully annotate a book like you do❤️💗

Annotating books is such an interesting idea - at this point I'll add a post it for something I want to come back to but that's about it. Definitely handy for reviewing - will have to rewatch for some tips on how to start annotating my books!

Love this video! I want to annotate my books so badly but I get so nervous about it and don't want to mess anything up (which I realize is not a big deal because they're my books and no one will really see them unless I want them to lol). I think I'm going to start using tabs/sticky notes and work my way up to writing on the books. (Thank you for captions!!)

I adore seeing how other people annotate their books. I love your system! I love annotating books, I also had an AP English class that instilled the love of annotating in me too and I love doing it still. I’ve changed how I annotate too and need to make an updated video as well. Great video!

💙I enjoy annotating my books. I don't annotate all of them, it depends, and what tab/highlight color I use for what (if anything) is always changing. I tab/highlight/write. I don't annotate graphic novels though.

Your system is amazing. I’m still part of that group that thinks annotating a book is a crime🙈. But I did do it in school books, and text books. I guess I also don’t annotate because I tend to sell books I know I won’t read again.

Your annotating actually makes more sense to me than other people that I've seen annotate. It's not something that I do myself cause it just isn't something that's clicked with me. But it sort of has with your version of it! :)

I just annotate as I feel at the moment. Sad blue, romance pink, funny yellow, pay attention orange, green for wel written or quote i like. Other than those I just write my thoughts in the bylines of the book as I go. Also I do this all on the second read. I read the first time without annotating.

This was so interesting - thank you for sharing. The key is the key! I usually annotate my book club books but then never remember what I was trying to tell myself. I’m definitely going to try making a key tailored to the book next time.

This is how I WANT to annotate when I choose to do so. But I typically only annotate when reading nonfiction. I could see myself doing something like this with fiction when diving back into something for a reread that I've already experienced once and really want to "chew on" the second time around.
Also, I really enjoyed actually reading your notes in this. Especially when you commented on a character being dumb. 😁

I’ve never annotated books I read for pleasure. However I’m going to be reading, “Stamped from the beginning” for a book club and I feel I need to use tabs and annotate even in pencil. The book is massive and I doubt I can easily recall where stuff is.

I commend you for the way you annotate. I love Midliners and Inkjoy pens. I wish I could do this type of annotation. I tried it and hated the different color highlighters in my book. I don't color code because I'm just way to lazy to do that and I get upset when I have to start a new pack of tabs because a specific color ran out. So, I go yellow, green, blue, orange, etc and then rinse and repeat. I do note character development, plot, etc.

I always use tabs, but I don't really have a color code, I choose colors that'll match with the cover. Normally I use two differentes colors, one for references / explanations and the other for parts that I really like. Watching other person's system it's very interesting, and I like how you annotate.
