    Since it's easy for a burglar to snap a handle and gain access to a cylinder, do you think it would be a good idea to weld the outside handle to the door instead of letting it be fixed with screw? (my door is an aluminum door) provided that you can still change the cylinder when needed by removing the plate that's on the inside of the door and then removing the cylinder from the inside.

  • @anthonyatkinson3480
    @anthonyatkinson3480 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Despite taking the door handles off and old lock out the new lock will not go all the way through due to the little lumps sticking out. Any ideas?

    • @aljaxon69
      @aljaxon69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah same here. how come no one has adressed this issue? do the lugs need to be filed off or dremel some notches in the door lock housing? or force through with the biggest sledge hammer you can find?

    • @SaxJockey
      @SaxJockey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aljaxon69 NO!!! The bumps are part of the design, to prevent the cylinder being forced inside the door during an attack. I am informed that provided you measure up and buy the correct size cylinder, it should fit. The cylinder has to be installed from the outside of the door, and have to remove the door handles (bumps not pass through external handle). The idea is that the bumps shoulder up to the metal frame inside the door. If it is a thumb turn cylinder, I understand the thumb turn needs to be removed in order to pass the cylinder from the outside, through the metal frame. There is a grub screw on the thumb turn to remove it. Having said all that, I can see that this Yale cylinder will not fit into my patio doors; the metal frame inside the door is very thick, meaning the bumps will not let the cylinder pass far enough through. They should be fine on my other doors so I have ordered some to try out.

    • @piratemurph2311
      @piratemurph2311 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aljaxon69 I had the same issue, the lugs wouldn’t get past the upvc door frame so I used the side of a drill to slightly widen the barrel shaped hole so the lugs would squeeze through. Easily done as it’s only plastic.

      @@SaxJockeyany updates on this? I’ve got the same issue. Haven’t tried removing the thumb turn and sliding in from the outside yet.

    • @SaxJockey
      @SaxJockey 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@curiousjoe395 I installed the Yale on two doors, no problem.
      Remove external handle, insert Yale cylinder from outside, metal bumps intended to come close to the metal within the door (security device to prevent being knocked through). If thumb turn, remove that (loosen grub screw), then re-fit once cylinder in place. I had to use a different type of lock on two other doors, because the metal bumps fouled the metal plate within the door.

    A lot don't realise that you have to remove the handle assy. to get one of those pinned Yales in. You should stress a bit more that low-level snap-proofing is defeated if the cyl. sticks out too far. Not everyone can afford £40-50 for a lock. I fitted ERA 3* 6-pin - cheaper than that Yale, about £30, and I just want to deter the casual burglar, nothing of enough value to justify pro treatment, like Rushden and Diamonds would pay a trfr fee for Kane, my experience is that most are pissed when they break in! A mole wrench or an adj. spanner (they snap sideways just as easy). Snapping has made this feasible - what do you think of the ERA? Could you show how to fit a replacement pair of cyl's in a modern UPVC double door, on the "wrong" side? The sort with the fake strut down the middle which blocks access to the retaining screw? Do I need to dismantle the whole mech? xxx
    Subbed and liked.

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment and support much appreciated. ERA is definitely a good lock no doubt personal I preferred the Yale because of the pinned design. I've installed on a set of double doors and what a hassle I had to remove the side plate on the door the part the multi locking system latches onto and then drill a small hole in the side from what i remember to enable me to remove the lock, I'll look into doing a video at some point showing how to do.

    I’m having no luck with my lock, the cylinder will not budge. It feels like it’s still locked in place. Do some locks/doors have another screw that holds cylinder in place?

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally no, there is no additional screw. You do however have to put your key in and turn slightly. Give it a go and let me know how you get on. Double check you are doing the right screw.

    A brilliant clear tutorial showing how to change Euro locks and some of the issues one might face while doing so and more importantly, the solutions. Better vid than everything I’ve seen so far, let’s hope I manage my locks just as easily
    Update: I changed both the locks on my front timber door today, both the euro cylinder and nightlatch. Had a few small issues as my door is a bit more complicated but got resolved and done. I feel like a genius right now 😂

    Requiring keys on both sides spells disaster when there is a fire in the middle of the night. Get a cylinder with a thumb screw on the inside. In this case that would be Yale DL35.

    • @MinkieWinkle
      @MinkieWinkle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      many of them can be manipulated with a thumb lock tool via the letter box, if you do get one, use a thumb screw that needs to pushed in or pull out as well as rotating, that way you minimise the risk of such a tool.

    • @cnutsack
      @cnutsack 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could just leave the key inside the cylinder once you get inside. It'd be the same as a thumb screw, but safer when you're not home.

    I’ve got this lock with the thumb turn on the inside. The balls that stick out on the cylinder body are preventing me from sliding the cylinder into the lock. Any ideas?

    Unfortunately, this lock has been picked on TH-cam.
    Any locks would you recommend?

    • @PloWarrior1
      @PloWarrior1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cleric775 nearly every lock has been picked on TH-cam, but these are by locksmiths or locksport guys. Your average criminal cannot pick high security locks.
      I recommend the ABS 3* lock or the ultion 3* which have been picked on TH-cam... but this lock is absolutely fine too...

    • @BD90..
      @BD90.. 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Abloy protec 2 euro has not been picked on TH-cam but I don't know if they sell them with anti snap.
      This lock is perfectly fine for use.

    • @PloWarrior1
      @PloWarrior1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anti snap is the most important thing though, they protec might have reinforced bar at bottom though.
      Banham is well up there too if your in that price range.

      Thumb Turn. Most brands offer that option.

  • @wqvawcaw

    Could you use that exact same cylinder for a door where the lock faces the RIGHT SIDE of the door frame? what i mean is, does the orientation of the cam matter? Here the cam is on the oposite side of de door frame (right from the cylinder if you look at it from the front), but if you put it on a door with the lock to the right, the cam would be between the cylinder and the door frame. Does that affect anything? thanks

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can, make sure you measure both sides of it.

    Great video but (there is always a but) - what's the point of high security lock if the whole door is made of glass? I believe that's a customer request.

    Assuming that the glass is 5 cm thick and durable enough so it can stop an axe, the door still needs metal security strip, or it opens in 2 seconds with a crowbar.

    • @GeekStreet
      @GeekStreet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Metal strip in the middle you mean?

    • @atklm1
      @atklm1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeekStreet Yes, I'm not sure what is it name in English, but it's usually 25x4 cm steel strip that is fixed in the middle of the door where the lock is, to prevent crowbar attack.
